- Kevin took a much-needed vacation to Costa Rica, so @jacquesinthegarden and Paul on the team snuck into the homestead, found an old drawing on his whiteboard, and surprised him with a newly rebuilt backyard garden for when he comes back.

I so wish someone would break in and do some of my yard projects when I'm gone! Great surprise, fellas!
Kevin surprising Jacque with a greenhouse and Jacque and Paul helping Kevin with big garden projects is the best kind of chaos❤
This is why they’re my favorites.
I just wanna say, Paul you did a great job! For someone who’s not really on camera, I thought he did a great job working with Jacques. Great video guys!!
Paul did a great job!
I need friends like Jaques, Kevin and Paul.
You may need stepping stones inside the test garden, thats pretty big, it's difficult to move through plants without tromping all over their roots and compressing the soil too much. Plus all the bending and stretching to reach. Just a thought. Looks great, and you know he will love it!
Good call!
I deliberately design my garden to keep me fit. I'm not sporty at all but I stetch, carry loads, bend etc just in my garden. Easy way to get exercise. My garden serves many purposes. Children love it as it's diverse and feels like an adventure every time they see something new. I've never been a straight line person ...😂 I do understand that as I'm getting older things might be more difficult....all the more reason to keep my body strong and supple. I also walk barefoot mostly, got Hobbit feet, broad with healthy spaces between my toes. I get laughed at etc. I don't care. Move like a child, you will stay healthier. Just sharing...you do what works for you. Goodwill, peace and happy learning to all.
I looked at the view count and I was like “how does his video only have 196 views” then I realized it was uploaded 6 minutes ago 😂

EARLY!
Jacque he had to take a vacation after gifting you that beautiful greenhouse that you did an amazing job putting together 🥰 He will be back 😊
That’s a really nice surprise for Kevin when he gets back from vacation! And a very thoughtful thank you for the greenhouse. :) But what about Eric? He’s gonna be super jealous and probably a little hurt that no one surprised him with anything. :( Poor guy.
If Jacques was my garden hermit I’d let him take a vacation whenever he wanted 😂
Looks great!!
You know that experiments raised bed you built 24’x24’? That’s larger than my entire back yard 😂😂😂. So jealous. Also very sweet of you guys to do this for Kevin while he is away. ❤❤
Like I mentioned in one of the previous videos, adding some swales into the experimental bed with deep mulching to create footpaths could be beneficial to help infiltrate some of that run off water. A lot of it will end up going around this bed now too. something to consider would be trying to direct some of this water by weeping tile through to the orchard. Always thinking of ways to direct huge runoff water and allow it a place to settle and stay within the property.
Great idea
Would love a tour/update of all the fruit trees in The Epic Garden 👍💚
Looks great! I outline 3’ wide long rows with reclaimed boards and dug down narrow paths and filled with woodchips. In the rows they got layered with sticks/logs on the bottom and organic matter with pathway dirt on top. It now retains moisture and I have worms!
You may want to stretch to 3 ft pathways. Overgrowth will cover these quickly.
Way to go, Paul, kudos on your color coordination efforts. I think you nailed the exact tool shed shade of green for your sneakers 👟🌱
Since it is a test garden, what about testing different cover crops? (Unless that would interfere with your other test results.) It would help secure the soil in place until you are ready to plant.
Great gift, Jacque & Paul. We can't wait to see it when all the space is grown in. If you're really bored, come spring. I have space that could use a fresh set of eyes 😉. Happy Holidays, everyone & Epic team !
PS would love to see a section with cover crops using chop & drop method vs bare soil same plants. Let see how many benefits there really are with cover crops.
My thoughts with the narrow paths were - how to get a wheelbarrow down? But it might just be the camera making things look small!
For the footpaths, we won't need to bring in a wheelbarrow!
Add another layer of 4x4s on top of bottom layer to allow for a deep layer of composting and a more productive bed
Love how you guys work so hard to surprise each other with these projects. Looks pretty good to me!
Seven or eight feet would be better when you push those chairs back!
I’m getting ready to really ramp up my 1 acre this spring and I was totally gonna forget about paths, so thank you for these videos saving me a lot of double work.
Be certain the paths will be wide enough for a wheelbarrow? Just a thought!
You also need a place to turn your wheelbarrel. I made straight lines between rows and forgot to lrave a larger space to turn without having to go all the way around.
@@helenmcclellan452 Good tip! I forgot turning around. LOL
@helenmcclellan452 I just go "beep"... "beep"... while backing up like a big semi. I have a wagon tho
@Electedsphinx40 😂
Laura (Garden Answer) many years ago made a pallet walkway. It still looks great!
Right? Everyone told her it would rot away, but it's been there for multiple years. She gets more rain than we do in San Diego County. I think the pallet wood is a pretty good hardwood.
For the test bed, what about growing some food and flowers and having a control group that receives no fertilizer. Then do another group of the same seeds that receives chicken manure or compost. Then another group that receives a general fertilizer like 4-4-4. And then another group that gets EM-1 (Microbial Inoculant Soil Amendment). Would love to which amendments produce the best results.
Good call!
Great job Eric 😂 I mean Kevin is gonna love this epic project
I enjoy your videos, and like you personalities. You should do some episodes where a gardener, getting older turns there garden into an easy acess and user friendly garden so they can continue gardening into there old age.
Lots of Boomers are at the age where this information may be relevant, also you kids may have an accident and loose some ablities, plus you're probably starting to feel age creeping on you.
You want to start to convert your garden over to easy access when you're young enough too still do the work and have the money to do it. Plan on this procees taking years because of scheduling and financial issues. This is why you have to start this conversion over to an easy access garden when you are young.
That might be an opportunity to visit a garden that is wheelchair accessible and discuss the modifications, which would also be interesting!
Love this idea.
love this idea as someone who unfortunately has chronic pain at a young age! been unsure on how to navigate this new terrain lol
@@ro2974week b4 mothers day- lowest prices on greenstalk at their website (but no epic color). U dont have to stack 5 or 7 high. Boom! Been waiting for a Paul episode!
Great job guys!! Can’t wait to see Kevin’s reaction and the garden come to life! Enjoyed the video!
7:41 that was straight up bullying hahaha the editor is savage
Eric is going to love that when he gets back from vacation!
LOL
Enjoy vacation Kevin
Love watching these planning and gardening preparation videos ❤
I desperately need someone to annotate my laugh sounds, thank you.
I think for the round sitting area…you can form a mosaic design with colored tiles. Maybe a big sunflower.
Paul is hysterical.
We love Paul
Looks awsome guys! Great Job carrying the Video Jacque your a Pro, And your also changing up the ending 😮 keep on Growing and good luck in the Garden
Hairy vetch, red clover , mustard seed, 1 other chop n drop cover crop vs whatever u normally amend ur soil with for spring veg planting of cucumbers, zukes, tomatoes n green beans. I was worried about wheelbarrow path n turnabout. Will u have to give up center table to get to beds?
This looks great! Can't wait to see the final for now product.
Paul has a great voice and great presence on vid, hope well see more of him un the future !
How cool! Can’t wait to see Kevins reaction!
Yall great people to surprise your friends like this, great test plot and good way to keep runoff out of the pond! Yall can surprise my garden and yard anytime 😊
Beautiful job! I wish you guys lived in Northern NJ!
❤ so satisfying to watch🥰!!! Definitely crop cover, I would love to see if crop cover is worth doing for winter.
Great duo! Love to see more Paul action❤
Both projects look good. With the raised won't you need pathways to walk in it so that you don't compact the soil?
Coming soon ;)
Love this! You guys are such an inspiration in and out of the garden!
I want to vote YES for the little wood pathways. I think they look great.
This is so awesome! Can't think of any experiments right now but I'm sure there will be tons of ideas at some point!
Jacques,
New epic bed looks great! 😃
As to a cover crop, if ya'all can grow it in your zone, try barley--fixes nitrogen, is beautiful when it flowers, plus pollinators love it. Ditto for Crimson clover. 😊
You know he's just going to change it all again in 2 yrs time 😂
TRUE LOL
Excellent job 👏
I think you guys should get a drone so we can get a big picture any the end every time. 😊
The 4x4 garden bed is a great idea I just need two guys to come help me build it 😂
You guys did a good job repaying the favour 👍👍👍the greenhouse was epic but this garden 10/10
I love the comraderie that you all have and the wonderful things y’all do for each other! It’s refreshing to see this type of content in a place that can be so negative at times ❤.
We love to do it!
Paul, the Farm Daddy ❤
Looks really great I think Kevin well really like what you two have done
Epic Jacque always enjoy an installation, nice hat Paul! I really like my KAVU visor I'm thinking about getting the hat
I need friends like this in my life 🙏🏼
You got that test bed well enough.if you were building a structure, I’d be concerned but not for a garden bed. The added rebars is a great idea.
I got a nice test for you and your team. Throw in mustard as a cover crop and let everyone guess how long it will take the whole team to havest all the seeds from the pods!
I’d love to see some trials with various liquid teas e.g worm tea, comfy tea, LAB and maybe rainwater vs town water???
Kevin is very fortunate to have Jacques and Paul to imagine and carry thru with the design on his new garden. Nevermind doing all the heavy lifting for the design!!! 🤣
Grateful for them - Kevin
I love that I know where Paul got his shoes lmao. I work for the shoe store that those are exclusive to, so I just kept paying attention to them.
I'd love to see tests of different amounts of direct light. How much better does a tomato really do in 6, 8, 10, or 12 hours?
I wish I had friends like this!❤
What’s with the Iron Man pop-up’s? Is that something for memberships/patreons? I must say, that project is looking pretty sweet , but a bigger middle circle is necessary for a garden table. Would y’all consider composting paths?
It's weird seeing just you and not Kevin on this channel. I like what you did.
I hope Kevin will be both surprised AND happy cuz you guys worked too hard to have to take it all apart if he don’t like it! 😅😅 Just one thing though, isn’t it the “rule” to build beds just wide enough to be able to comfortably reach across from side to side? This bed is huge, y’all will be trampling all the plants trying to get across it!
We've got a plan for that!
@@epichomesteading my bad, should’ve figured of all people you’d have it under control!! 🤣🤣🤣Thanks for responding btw! 👍👍
Aspiring backyard carpenter here. Is the purpose of the 45 degree cuts to help the structure stay together better? I assume that is more sound than just having two straight cuts against each other?
Easier to screw in at a 45° angle!
Excellent! Looks square and level to me!
Thank you!
Ummm ohkay editorial shenanigans in this ep 😅
This homestead is missing one thing…
A garden railroad.
CHOO CHOO
Picture it. A small scale working battery operated train to hold gnomes shaped like the crew. @@epichomesteading
Awesome!
Oh my gosh, do a thyme path! 😆
In trim carpentry that 45 degree cut joint is called a scarf joint
A short path with one curve is sufficient to make it organic. 2 curves and you'll fee like you need to stagger to follow it.
Jacques, we are going on holiday soon, so like, you know, just saying.... 😁
We need more Paul!
Test watermelons for size using different fertilizers
I want you guys to test out soil composition on tomato plants
you should do a bit about plants to not put together. See if they actually hold true or not. It may be a bit wasteful though so who knows.
I mean, that looks like a California state record pumpkin patch coming up. Could probably fit 1 plant in there.
I forgot Kevin's name is Kevin (why? sub-par brain I guess), and I thought the crew had visited KallmeKris (yes all the way up in Canada) to make a garden for her dog (Kevin).
I mean... what??? LOL
Incidentally, great work! That looks well-leveled and square :) Kevin (the man, not the dog) is lucky to have you!
Ha, can you imagine!
Love it Jacque
But Men, I think you need a bigger circle so you have room to get by the table. perhaps?
How fun! Y'all need to get a reaction video when you can.
multi year project for the test garden. Epic Pepper crossbreeds
Two inches of rain coming on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 to San Diego area.
After a covercrop, maybe a row of tobacco? I'm planning to trial Little Dutch variety spring 2024 just for something completely different.
Just curious, what camera were you using for this video? The quality's great and the panning is so smooth.
GoPro Hero 6
Very nice Jacques and Paul! Kevin is going to love it💚
Exciting!!!
For real though, I would murder if someone came and took away all that glorious work in my own paradise 🤣
I'm am so jealous of Kevin, he built a garden empire and now has hot guys building gardens for him while he's on vacation lol. #LifeGoals
The ironman pop ups😭🤣
No joke, but I saw the video title and audibly gasped before clicking. XD
Hopefully, he won't come home and say that he came up with a whole new game plan. That is the only thing wrong with surprising people when it comes to large projects. Time to think, creating changes to premade plans.
If you help me with my messy garden I invite you to vacation here 😂 I live in Dominican Republic, is a good deal, think about it 😁
Paul looks like Jacques' older brother
The wood would be pleasing…but it does get slippery when wet…
