- As the namesake for "The Legend of Zelda," there have been a lot of versions of Hyrule's princess. For this list, we’ll be judging each incarnation based on their feats, personality, and how big a role they play. However we’re only looking at incarnations from the mainline series. Our countdown includes The Prisoner from “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” (2006), The Pirate from “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” (2003), The Classic Princess from “The Legend of Zelda” (1987), The Champion from “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” (2017), and more! Probably because they placed the romantic dimensions of Zelda & Links relationship front and center, unlike most previous installments.
Her character design is also a bit more girlish than usual, which adds to the wistfulness of the piece.
As much as I love SS Zelda, her botw incarnation has to be my favorite. Her character arc, flaws, & overall development was so refreshing to see. She technically wasn’t a damsel in the game, but merely keeping Ganon at bay until Link could defeat him, & after what went down in totk, she really solidified herself as a selfless & dedicated, albeit tragic leader. I feel like this Zelda is more multilayered than the others & that’s what makes her so powerful as a character.
Skyward Sword Zelda is definitely my favorite. She has such an important role in the story. Seeing her relationship with Link in the beginning is so adorable, and wholesome. It makes it so that you really feel motivated to press on in order to save her. Also, the scene where she reveals who she really is, but still assures us that she is still the same Zelda Link grew up with, causes my eyes to water every time...
I agree with Skyward Sword Zelda being the best. She's not only adorable, but she's one of the few versions to actually have a character arc of her own, even though Link is the character we follow throughout the story. I think it helps that we really get to feel the connection between Link and Zelda as well. Link usually doesn't have much personality, but he's quite expressive in Skyward Sword and his affection for her is apparent. That helps motivate us and provide more of an emotional pull than if we were just playing another game where Link was just told to rescue Zelda or save the kingdom because reasons. As much as I love Breath of the Wild's Zelda as well, I think it's that special bond between her and Link that elevates her further in SS.
I really think spirit tracks should be higher. She is playable joins you in the final boss as well as throughout the game you literally Learn to control Zelda during the prologue. she has a major role in the story and an actual bond with link what more could you possibly want?

No just friendship bond bond, I like a legit romance interest, they both went through hardship and the ending was just amazing for me
Not only she is useful during all the adventure and never really get kidnapped but she is also an interesting character, unlike most Zelda who are just wise and beautiful she has flaws that she must overcome during the adventure, she has also many funny moments. In Zelda games Link's companions are often the most devlopped characters so making Zelda the companion was a really good idea.
I feel you sold BotW/TotK Zelda a bit short here. I would have placed her at #2 minimum.
It seems no account was taken of just how much she did after travelling to the past, both to aid Rauru and also to set-up the plan to defeat the Demon King in the future. Not only that the tremendous character growth she's undergone in going from a princess burried in self-doubt to being a confident, competent, and dedicated ruler in the midst of organising the entire rebuilding of her kingdom. Add on top of that the sacrifice she made that she fully expected to be permanent, spending probably a minimum of 20-30k years+ repairing and empowering the Master Sword, and the only reason I'd place SS Zelda above her is because without SS Zelda's plan/actions we'd not have the Master Sword to begin with.

Seriously, most Zelda games make Zelda a glorified cheerleader, or a damsel in distress. Spirit tracks gives us the highest potential of what a well written Zelda could actually show us.
Twilight princess zelda was so mature. Guess i am more partial to that as her being a ruler vs a giggling school girl.
Twilight is one of my favorite but I feel she had more potential than was given in the game. She was ready to fight, fearless, and seem like she was not afraid of anything. Twilight, Wind weaker, and Oot seem of a fighter than a damsel in distress. I would like to see more versions of Zelda like that. To be part of the action and not just wait for link to do almost everything.

BOTW Zelda is so well written. I love her journey of self discovery and empowerment.
Don’t forget the core of her character is the theme of “scholastic vs monastic”.
TOtK, The origin of the Light Dragon broke me. Thats all I have to say. I was not ready for that moment.

My only gripes with OoT Zelda are that, as a kid, she tried to outsmart Ganon and that doomed Hyrule and, as an adult, she doomed Hyrule, again, by sending Link to the past and splitted the timeline... So much for a wearer of the Triforce of Wisdom... 😅

Breath of the Wild/Age of Calamity/Tears of the Kingdom is my favorite version of Zelda. She’s very relatable in so many ways and her relationship with Link is very wholesome. I hope they share a kiss for future Zelda games.

I thought I've outgrown video game crushes until I played SS.
Yes. I would have been disappointed to see Skyward Sword Zelda not take #1. I think this list also shows that generally speaking, Zelda's character has only gotten stronger with time throughout the evolution of the series. I haven't played TOTK, but I look forward to seeing what they do with her.
My favorite is Twilight Princess.

After Tears of the Kingdom that version of Zelda has easily become my favorite (no shame to ST or SS though). Her sacrificing her sense of self to become a dragon and repair the master sword was one of the most chilling moments in the whole franchise. Loved it.

Imagine a Legend of Zelda game where (due to some bizarre magical time & space shenanigans and a malevolent reality-warping villain plot) all the incarnations of Zelda were brought together (plus a couple of possible Zelda-like or related characters such as Queen Sonia, Princess Hilda and maybe somehow Marin, etc.), and they all interacted with each other.

Should do a version for impa, as their are many versions of her that appeared in the series. Though my favorite are first hryule warriors impa, Skyward Sword impa, and Ocarina of time impa. The recent one is nice but no where good as the ones i listed. ^^

Now that totk is out that zelda is absolutely the best, first in bowt she was strong enough to hold calamity ganom for 100 years alone, wich is the strongest ganom we’ve sern to date, but the in totk we learn that she traveled back in time, tried to fight ganondof there, failed but prepared everything she could possibly think to guide link thousands of years in the future, then sacrificed her own sense of self to become the light dragon and repower the master sword, and even as a dragon without her memories her willpower still made her drago form fight dragon ganondorf and help link out of pure stinct (since she was no longer conscious of her actions). Lets not forget she waited for thousands of years as a immortal dragon for that, so yeah, this zelda is absolutely the best and i dare say the strongest

How is ST Zelda not first ?
Because she looses points for being scared of rats apparently also they would never let a handheld near first
Even then her rat phobia shouldn’t lose her THAT many points, especially considering she actively assisted the Link of that time in more than just one fight. Plus, she’s the complete opposite of a blank slate in personality.
I think BOTW Zelda should of been higher. She holds off Calamity Ganon for 100 years. Goes back in time and handles so much in TOTK then spoiler....

I do way disagree to much for the last 3 positions, for me would've been 3rd place the Skyward sword, 2 Ocarina of time and number one BOTW & TOTK, simple as as she was strong enough to stop Ganon by 100 years and still survive and help you in the final fight once again facing Ganon to destroy him, besides that pretty good video
I feel TP Zelda deserves a higher consodering her sacrifices and her part in fighting Ganondorf. BotW and TotK Zelda definitely deserve #1 due to her character development and finding her strenght and courage to gold back Calamity Ganon and sacrifice herself in the sequel

I never finished OoT so my top three are link between worlds, skyward sword, and botw and tok. They are just my favorite with twilight princess as my 4th. Probably because those games are my favorite but I do like how zelda is in each

No disrespect to BOTW-TOTK Zelda but man…. The cutscenes are tough to sit through in both games. The generic lighthearted style of voice acting for Zelda almost ruins the games story for me.
To clarify, I think not only Zelda’s voice in these games suffer from the direction, almost every character does but that might be because Legend of Zelda storytelling aesthetic for me has always been created through music that compliments you reading the dialogue. Making specific voices for each character breaks the immersion.
YES THANK YOU, I love totk and botw(some of my favorite video games) but god the voice acting is cringe a lot of the time and the animation is pretty poor especially in totk.
Agreed... I already feel like she's a bit overhyped and the awkward anime dub voice just crushes any affection I could have toward her. I agree she's a step in the right direction because she gets an arc, but it kind of shows how low the bar is if "teenage girl struggles to find her destiny" is THAT impactful for people. And her personality can be summed up as "book smart". Are people just projecting on to her? I feel like I've seen her type a thousand times, and the voice acting removes any possibility of charm coming through to save it. I can't be charmed if I'm cringing at the overacting.

My favorite Zelda's are TP Zelda and Ocarina Zelda.
The Zelda that sleep at least managed to protect the triforce and her curse is the result of her actions while the Zelda from four sword really doe nothing. And if I remember correctly the Zelda from a Link Between World give you the bow of light. The Zelda from a Link to the Past give some advice and use her power to permit Link to enter Aganhim's tower, it's not great but way better than most damsel in distress.

If y'all ask me, I'd much prefer Sheik to be her OWN character in the Zelda franchises. I want Sheik to be her own character in the Zelda franchises, so she can be Friends and Partners with Link and Zelda. If only Sheik could've been a Childhood Best Friend to Link, the two of them would've been like Two Peas in a Pod. Sheik could've been the Official Ninja Bodyguard for Zelda of the Royal Family of Hyrule throughout the years in the Zelda series. She could've been like a True Childhood Best Friend of Link. Think about it: Mario has his little brother, Luigi, Donkey Kong has his little buddy, Diddy Kong, Kirby has his Best Friend and Rival, Meta Knight, and Fox McCloud has his Best Friend and Rival, Falco Lombardi of Team Star Fox. Sheik could've ALWAYS been at Link's side at all times in the Zelda series.
And this is why we need a Zelda where she's the main protagonist. Seriously, she gets kidnapped and sidelined almost as much as Princess Peach. At least it isn't called Super Peach Princess.

You do know that some of the Zeldas are the same person, right? Not just BotW and TotK (also the same one from "Age Of Calamity").
"The Legend of Zelda" and "The Adventure of Link" are the same Zelda.
"A Link To The Past" and "A Link Between Worlds" are the same Zelda (along with "Link's Awakening", "Oracle Of The Seasons", "Oracle Of The Ages", and "Tri Force Heroes").

Say what you will about the animated show, but it's design for Zelda was great.
I prefer the Incarnations of Zelda from *Oracles of Ages and Seasons,* *The Minish Cap,* *Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures,* *A Link Between Worlds,* *Twilight Princess,* *Skyward Sword,* *The Wind Waker,* *Ocarina of Time* and *Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity and Tears of the Kingdom.*

I disagree with your placement of the Zelda from BotW and TotK. She is easily the most relatable and humanized version of the character to date, and TotK solidifies her as the best version of Zelda thus far. And this is further set in Age of Calamity. While it's a spinoff title that branches into an alternate timeline, it's still canon and still adds a ton of context to the struggles this Zelda faced as an insurmountable level of pressure is placed on her to fulfill her duty. Every step of the way you can feel her crippling anxiety bubbling slowly to the surface, the resentment she felt twords herself in which she redirected at Link, all while doing everything she could to at the very least be of some use. Not one single other version of Zelda has ever commanded this level of empathy before. Easily she's my number one ranked Zelda.

Skyward Sword Zelda was likable, but I would argue that BotW/TotK Zelda is by far the most noble. In spite of all her self doubt and in spite of all her father's lecturing, she shined through three times. 1. She kept herself imprisoned in a century long stalemate with Calamity Ganon. 2. She succeeded in sealing him away. That is after she threw herself between Link and a Guardian. 3. She banished herself again. This time, for thousands of years, becoming immortal and changing her form to help Link in a single moment in time. All the while, knowing she would have to stay that way even after her task was done. No, there is plenty more there to love. AND she showed her imperfections and was more human.
You forgot about the part where when she was little she created a guardian that helped save a entire timeline

Well to be honest the entire zelda timeline is a what if.The whole point of the fallen timeline is what would happen if link lost to ganon

Twighlight Princess Zelda is the best. Botw is so overrrated IMO. Zelda in TP was shown to have such wisdom and stoic confidence and she had this very mystical aura around her that has not been in any other version.

Note, Zelda 2's sleeping Zelda isn't connected to the Zelda's that are the incarnation of Hylia. She's a maiden that started the naming tradition in the Fallen Timeline. This is per the Hyrule Historia.
Where did you get that misinformation from? It's never stated anywhere that Zelda 2's Zelda isn't an actual Zelda.

i get that the games themselves are hot trash, but the cdi versions of the zelda cast are unironically my favorite iterations of the characters. The princess herself especially. Sheik was basically worthless (smash notwithstanding) and tetra gets put on a bus for 80% of both games she was in, but cdi zelda basically had a whole game dedicated to returning the favor to link after being rescued in the last game, and presumably also a broad strokes version of both nes games and the cartoon. On top of that, her being a bit more serious when it comes to stopping ganon makes her a great foil to link, without it just being a zelda themed knockoff of the show _moonlighting_ like the cartoon.
