  • In this episode I am fishing a local Auckland rock ledge with my saltwater fly fishing gear trying to catch some kahawai. A friend alerted me to some kahawai and kingfish action the day before so we head out with high hopes. Watch to see what happens.

    Great video, I recognise the spot and local to me so will give it a crack on fly! Can't believe you got it so quiet there!! Cheers

      Yeah it's busy on weekends but we managed a sneaky midweek. That always helps plus with the grader working the gravel road it was a pain to get there. Outgoing seems to be the best up to low then the activity dies down.

    Great stuff! Any recommendations on floating/intermediate lines for the 10 weight when targeting kahawai/kingfish?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andy. The key with lines for kingfish is the core strenght and pretty much most saltwater rated lines should have something around the 50 to 70lb mark. The next thing is having a taper that can turn over wind resistant poppers and large baitfish flies in the wind. Currently I am using the ILFF Saltwater fly line which has been holding up well. Simon has been using the sink tip Stone Creek Saltwater Fly line and he loves that one. These are solid affordable line option. Any saltwater labled lines from the large brands like Rio, SA, Airflo etc are obviously great and if you speak to the shop that sells them they will be able to tell you which line they recommed for local use. You can find the ILFF and Stone Creek lines here www.flyfishinginxs.kiwi/product-categories/fly-line-saltwater hope that helps.

      Yeah, it can be great for kings when it's on. Outgoing tide is the way to go. It's covered at full tide. Sheltered from westerlies. Not seen many landed though. Not sure if it is even realistic on fly. That kelp and rocks in front is a real hazard. Will have to see when I hook one eventually. I mostly target the kahawai.

      It's pretty calm on the rocks if you pick the right day. Just keep away from the point where the current rips out.

    Hey!
    What would be the "right" Rod wt and line wt/type for Kahawai from the shore?
    Your setup seems a bit too much maybe?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kahawai honestly doesn't need much more than a 6wt. The guys in Tauranga even go ultralight with 3wt fiberglass. A 5 or 6wt trout setup will do fine for Kahawai and snapper with smaller light flies. But if I was going to get only one saltwater setup it would be an 8wt so I can deal with wind, bigger flies and bigger fish.

      @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing ek bly op jbay in die oos kaap, maar ek is nou op skool in Michigan, maar ek gaan huis toe elke jaar vir ons winter. Ek vis die meeste van ons boot af, soos 20m tot 70m vir hake en geelbek of kob. Maar ek wil eintlik meer van die kant af begin vis, ek het al baie shad en haaie gevang van die kant af op aas, maar ek wou begin om my eie flys begin vasmaak.

      @@martyboy6783 daai 9wt gaan great wees bir jbay vir shad, leervis ens. Bai opsies daar van die boot af 20 to 70 is baie diep vir fly. Ek vang selde meer as 10m van my boot af. Kyk na van my boot videos dan kan jy die setup sien. Behoort te werk as daar enige aktiewiteit op die oppervlak is. Vir Michigan weet ek nie, daar so baie soorte varswater vis daar jy sal maar n local fly shop moet gaan vra wat is die beste opsie.

    Great! But why reel right handed if you cast right handed?? 🤦🏼‍♂️

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's one of my old reels at the start, haven't been bothered to change it over to left hand like my newer setup I used later on. I can do both hands without a problem and I can't say it's ever made a difference to me fishing wise anyway. I'll change it over one day when I need to replace the line.

    • @208sam
      @208sam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing fair enough...since you're so good at switching hands, next time you hook one just let go and flip your reel once they're out all the way. Let the fish do half the work 😂 On a real note, great video... made me wanna find some saltwater!
