  • Steve Young is a 3-time Super Bowl champion with the San Francisco 49ers, a two-time NFL MVP, and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. When he retired, Steve was the highest-rated quarterback in NFL history and was the only quarterback in league history to win four consecutive NFL passing titles.
Steve is currently Partner and Chairman of Huntsman Gay Global Capital. He’s the founder and chairman of the Forever Young Foundation, an organization focused on passing on hope and resources for the development, strength, and education of children. Steve also serves on Faith Matters’ advisory board.
But today, we talked about something different: Steve’s written an incredible new book called The Law of Love, which was just published by Deseret Book.
As we read this book and talked with Steve, we were struck by the depth of his faith and wisdom, and by the passion that he has for teaching this eternal principle. As it’s put in the book, “The law of love is loving as God loves, seeking another’s healing, and expecting nothing in return.”
In the book and in the interview, Steve illustrates how a simple but profound shift from transactional thinking to non-transactional thinking - both in our relationship with God and in our relationship with others - has life-changing implications. Steve brings the principle to life with moving stories and experiences, which show how loving fully - as God loves - always works. As Steve says: “the law of love is undefeated.”
We can’t thank Steve enough both for writing this book, and for coming on the podcast to talk about it. It was obvious to us that he’s truly seeking to live “the law of love,” and we think you’ll feel that too.
And with that, we’ll jump right into the conversation.

I love that you brought up the truths Joseph Smith taught, Steve. I also love the following quote from Elder Holland, "As near as I can tell, Christ never once withheld His love from anyone, but He also never once said to anyone, ‘Because I love you, you are exempt from keeping my commandments.’ We are tasked with trying to strike that same sensitive, demanding balance in our lives.” This, too is an absolute truth.

Love really is the air to which all movement flows in and through. Thank you Steve, Tim and Aubrey for being present in this moment of love. To know of this ground, you’ve had to find it within yourselves first. That is sacred ground of healing to which I reverence. I felt in part, what Thomas McConkie would call, “ Your original face.” A place I can’t touch or physically recall but know it’s apart of my form. Your conversation here, brought me to this face. I will echo this feeling of love, in the wake of those I come in contact with. I’m truly touched by this conversation, so appreciative by this gift. Thank you, truly.

Just met Steve Young yesterday at my job in Detroit. I'm a shuttle bus driver for Hertz at Detroit Metro Airport and he was on my bus and I told him he looks like David Hasselhoff and he said no I'm Steve Young and immediately I was excited. We were already having a great conversation about Detroit, and he said some really nice things and after I recognized him we talked even more and it felt like I've known him for years. I couldn't get a picture or an autograph because I was driving but he was so cool and down to earth that it made my day just to actually be holding a casual conversation with a hall of famer quarterback and one of ESPN's top analysts!

After listening to Steve explaining the Law of Love with such passion and emotion, I ordered the book from Amazon on my Kindle and also the paperback version. The Kindle version was there instantly, and I started to read the 1st chapter where he describes his troubled relationship with Charles Haley, and how that was resolved. During the podcast he was struggling with the explanation of the "how", how do you do it? I felt as I read his first story in the book, he gave us the vision of the "how". Here is what he said, "I wasn't asking Charles about his wife to impress him or win him over; I genuinely wanted to know how he and his family were doing." I believe that is the answer for all of us, to be sincere, and unconditionally genuine in our love, compassion, care, and service to others! "By kindness, gentleness, and meekness.... and by love unfeigned.... without hypocrisy, and without guile." Thank you, Steve, for teaching us the "How"

I have come to see the commandments as a subscription of what is the loving thing to do.
    Example :
    A personal thought ;
A neighbor has a wonderful pet dog.
How do I show love for my neighbor -
    1. Rejoice with the neighbor
    2. Caveat the dog
    3. Take the dog & keep it
    4. Say it's my dog
    And the answer is -
    Number 1.
So it seems to work. It helpful to me, anyway.
Thank you for this discussion and this wonderful book. This should be very healing !

Steve is an excellent human being and way ahead of the rest of us in terms of becoming complete (or perfect if your read the KJV translation of the bible). He is a descendant of family arraignments sanctioned by God in the 1800s. I hope there are more descendants like him to light this dark world that still scorns the restored truth.

I'm confused about what Steve meant when he said no one will be lost.

Steve has stepped away from Mormonism and found Biblical Christianity -- Love is the fundamental teaching of Christ.

Steve means well, but he should stick to football and buying companies. Theology is not his strong suit.
