    I'm up to the one where the fixer upper couple said that it had 'no curb appeal'. I don't understand. I think it is really pretty. There are some Ugly houses in England but this was far, far from that. Imho, of course.

      You don't have to imagine it, you saw it with your own eyes! It was perfect for this couple, and I'm glad they bought it. They had enough imagination to perceive the potential of that building. I wish more people had the creativity to see beyond the surface of things.

    I often wonder why they don’t show condos more on this show. These two guys, living on and off the ship, would be great candidates for maintenance-free condo living. I think I’ve seen only one instance which might have qualified since it had a monthly fee. Are they not as popular in the UK? Or not when this show was made?

    • @thehungrygoldfish
      @thehungrygoldfish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Condo isn't really a term used in Europe. They mostly use "apartment" as a universal term for both rented and purchased apartments. In the UK, flat is interchangeable with apartment. Typically, in London, in that budget at that time, they would be loking for apartments but the areas they were looking in were quite affordable, so they could afford a house. If you can afford a house for around 300k, why not do it?

    • @thornbird6768
      @thornbird6768 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In the UK apartments or flats as we call them are not as popular as in the US . The people who do buy them are usually single professionals.

    • @nancydeshaies4558
      @nancydeshaies4558 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Here in the US, condo is a term for a financial arrangement for purchasing, not a style of housing. You buy the abode, but you pay a monthly maintenance fee which, depending on the location, usually covers lawn mowing, shoveling snow, and outside building maintenance, such as painting the exterior or shingling the roof. Considering the guys are away for large stretches of time on board the cruise ship, not having to deal with any of the maintenance could be a huge plus.

    • @lysem4392
      @lysem4392 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same thought. A flat would make a lot more sense for people who are away six months of the year.

    That Masonic order property is too expensive for all the works that it requires. They need to redo the electricity, repaint, re-organize space, etc! That's at least 200k they need for renovation!

    • @thehungrygoldfish
      @thehungrygoldfish ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I believe they spent half that, but Toby did most of the work himself, and they had to make a lot of sacrifices. The thing with a fixer upper is that at least you know it needs a lot of work. There's no surprises. There are horror stories where someone bought a brand new house, and it had to be completely gutted.

    Interesting episode. Both couples were very dynamic and both were able to articulate their desires well and give good feedback so Kirstie and Phil knew where to go next. It is inconceivable that a property sit in the market for that amount of time. In Toronto it is very common for the For Sale sign to go up on Wednesday, Agents' Open House Thursday. Public open house Saturday and Sunday. House inspectors (Surveyors) from all interested parties on Monday. By close of business Tuesday all offers are in and a decision is made about which to accept. Sold sign up Wednesday. The sale price is usually well over asking, and the average transaction price for a detached 3 bed house is now roughly $1,300,000CDN, or £780-790,000 Sterling. Houses normally sell for between 20 and 30% over asking.

      It's exactly the same here in Hamilton/Stoney Creek. Sometimes they don't even have an inspection done. Prices went up to crazy amounts! We have letters offering to buy our home about twice a week. Our low 6 digit home in 2000, is now worth 10X what it was. I know quite a few people who jumped on the bandwagon, and sold. I know we'll never get the property we have now for that price. I'm getting buried here lol!

    I am so glad Nadine and Toby got the Property they wanted. It's so refreshing to see buyers who are different from so, so many other buyers on this show who swoon at the thought of removing wallpaper or repainting a room, calling these little redecorating jobs "a lot of work", and who universally list a big kitchen-diner (yawn) in their wish list.

    • @thehungrygoldfish
      @thehungrygoldfish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did enjoy Nadine's reaction when Kirstie told her how much of a renovation it was going to be. I did laugh a little bit when Kirstie told them that it was one of the most challenging things they have ever showed anyone on the show. They have shown quite a few ruins and houses that were in a lot worse condition than the lodge. Like this wouldn't even be in the top 25 houses that needed work.

    • @lysem4392
      @lysem4392 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thehungrygoldfish True, although the ruins tended to be agriculture buildings of some sort. This is the first time I can think of concerning a non-residential urban structure.
      But yeah, the people who reject houses because they consider removing wallpaper too much of an ordeal kill me. The house is otherwise everything they asked for but they reject it because of *that*? Talk about namby pamby.

  • @nancyn347
    @nancyn347 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It seems to me that the cruise ship gentlemen did not fall in love with any of the houses they were shown, and they settled for the one out of desperation. Perhaps they should have continued looking. To me, they were after a really modern renovated flat, which they could probably have got. Do they really want a yard they have to maintain while they're away for so many months of the year? Thanks so much for the upload.

    • @thehungrygoldfish
      @thehungrygoldfish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Um, I strongly disagree. Jason fell in love with the second house. Like what else did he have to say and do to convince you that he loved it? Marry it? Jump up and down for 10 hours? Duct tape the house to his body? Like I don't understand what type of response you're looking for.

    Wrong! They don't always do a good job. Typical agents showing one house backing on to a railway line and another fronting a busy road! They should never have shown those properties because they would never live there themselves! No wonder agents have a bad name!

    • @thehungrygoldfish
      @thehungrygoldfish ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They're not "agents" in the traditional sense. They're property finders. They don't exist in the US, but it's a popular thing in the UK/Europe. It's basically a person who helps you find properties but is not a part of an estate firm, kind of like a freelancer, if you will. Of course, ideally no one wants to have a house on a railway line or on a busy road, but then the house would have other compromises to make up for being on a quiet street, like it being a fixer upper, or the location not being your ideal location or the size of the house. There will always be a compromise. You want to be on a quiet street with a good sized yard not being overlooked by anything, that's fine, but the house will be small and have only two bedrooms and a tiny kitchen, or it will be large and lovely and quiet and move-in ready, but 12 miles from your ideal location.
