- Samarkand was one of the major stops on Silk Road. In the 14th century it became the capital of the Timurid empire (founded by Tamerlane/Timur), and one of the most important and beautiful cities in Central Asia.
Samarkand is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: "The historic town of Samarkand is a crossroad and melting pot of the world's cultures. Founded in the 7th century B.C. as ancient Afrasiab, Samarkand had its most significant development in the Timurid period from the 14th to the 15th centuries. The major monuments include the Registan Mosque and madrasas, Bibi-Khanum Mosque, the Shakhi-Zinda compound and the Gur-Emir ensemble, as well as Ulugh-Beg's Observatory." For more than 1000 years these cities weren't Tajik or Persian.
So much angry from Tajik side toward Uzbeks. During the decades a lot of nationalities were living there. We never had such ethnic problems Tajik, Uzbek... However If you take a look a bit closer...
For the last 1000 years before Russian Empire entered these regions were ruled by Amir Temur (Turkic-Mongolian), Sheybani han (Uzbek) etc in other words this territories were ruled by Uzbek or Turkic emirs, khans, or whatsoever. There is a link below you can see which nationalities were living and what was the population.
I agree with that fact that in the beginning these places were Persian, but it was long time ago more than 1000 years. After that none of Persian Dynasty or Persian Emirs were there.
The reason why after collapsing USSR. Samarkand and Bukhara was given to Uzbekistan only because Uzbek or Turkic leaders were the last and most successful leaders. Who build everything there: Gur Emir, Registan etc. and not Tajik or Persian leaders.

You have some great stuff here, fascinating architecture and some of the building are massive. I am impressed at how good their condition is, some looked like they are still being restored but most are immaculate. Video quality is excellent as usual.

A history of Samarkand is a history of the greatest empires of the world. Samarkand has been conquered many times, many times it survived and flourished, subsequently under the rule of the Persians, the Macedonians, the Turks, the Caliphates, the Mongols, the Timurids, and even the Soviet Russians. A truly amazing place. I hope Uzebeks do not let Islamic fanatics destroy this incredible city.

This city has seen some of history's greatest figures, from Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan to Babur and Tamerlane, this last of whom really made it the sparkling jewel it is today. Many of those lavish mosques and madrasahs were commissioned by him. God, what it must have been like in his time!
