Hey Book Boy! Thanks for this. Helicopter, Chasing Heather Crazy, Best of Jill Jives are in my top 20 (impossible for me to do a top 10) but you've introduced me to a few things here and I appreciate it.
I am way too afraid of committing to put together a list like this. I doubt I could settle on my top ten songs from Under the Bushes Under the Stars. But thanks for doing this podcast, Jeff.
Just do it. I now have a legendary top ten list!!! I put Chasing Heather Crazy on twice!!! Do it, because your loves will help others find songs they may have over-looked,
Only really just got into GBV-so it’s exciting to only even *know* one song on your list! I saw them live having never heard them back in college but didn’t think much of em. Half a decade later and I listen to Alien Lanes all the time.
Noah, my friend introduced me to GBV many years ago. He talked about being backstage and talking to Robert Pollard and being amazed by him. Sadly, I never dug in the way I should have, although I was impressed with what I heard. It was almost as if I thought, "These songs I've heard have to be their very best...." This is a band that does not demand attention, it demands study. I've decided it's time to go to "Pop Brilliance School" and get my degree.

Indian Was an Angel 9. Johnny Appleseed 8. Don't Stop Now 7. Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox 6. Everybody Thinks I'm A Raincloud 5. Space Gun 4. Taco, Buffalo, Birddog and Jesus 3. Cigarette Tricks 2. Pendulum 1. Peephole (which is also just my favorite song by any band of all time forever)
heck yeah, Jonny Appleseed and Pendulum would make my top ten as well. My top ten would have to have Dust Devil and We've Got Airplanes from King Shit...Matter eater Lad...so many tracks from Under the Bushes...Everyday from Sandbox.....its basically an impossible task to make a GBV top ten, isn't it?
@@selfinflictedauralnostalgi9067 heheh please do a 11-20 top tracks video sometime if you feel the inspiration....really cool to know someone nobly took their GBV appreciation to another level and produced something great. I really appreciated all the research you put in to everything especially when it came to the details of Pollard's lyrics
@@AnannatNG We've Got Airplanes & Dust Devil are AMAZING. I'm not the biggest fan of King Shit & the Golden Boys as an album because the tracklist isn't very cohesive, but those first two songs are one of the best 1-2 opening punches ever
The first time I heard GBV I was working as a file clerk at Bogle & Gates in Seattle in 1994 , listening to KCMU, now KEXP, in the file room. I can't remember if it was "I am a scientist" or "Liar's Tale". I was intrigued. Regardless, someone told me that they're just a bar band, so I didn't investigate further. Not a trusted source. In 1997, I took the plunge and bought "Mag Earwig". I played it constantly and recorded a cover of "Not Behind the Fighter Jet" on 4-track cassette, since lost, thankfully. I think about making a mix tape for my bandmates, as they're still not massive fans, but the task is daunting. 10 double albums with gatefold sleeves would be just a start.
Can't argue with that # 1, way up there for me as well. Fair Touching and If We Wait are top ten are in my top 10. Sorry to hear these videos are ending, they were awesome, great job!
John, two fantastic additions; because of course there is no such thing as the 10 best from GBV.... it is an impossible task and your two suggestions are great.
10. Once in a While 9. Ex-Supermodel (snoring gets on my nerves tho) 8. Please Freeze Me 7. Red Gas Circle 6. Sentimental Wars 5. Dorothy's a Planet (suitcase demo) 4. You're Not an Airplane 3. Weedking 2. Class Clown Spots a UFO (Suitcase 3 version) Honorable Mentions: Over The Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox, Ester's Day, basically anything off Alien Lanes that isn't Ex-Supermodel or the number 1 spot, To Remake the Young Flyer, Cut Out Witch, basically anything off August By Cake that isn't Sentimental Wars and the winner is 1. Always Crush Me
1. He's The Uncle 2. Echos Myron 3. Blimps Go 90 4. Buzzards & Dreadful Crows 5. Indian Fables 6. Navigating Flood Regions 7. Jar Of Cardinals 8. 14 Cheerleader Coldfront 9. Color Of My Blade 10. My Impression Now
Excellent man!! I too, think "He's the Uncle" is the greatest GBV-song of all time. "Color Of My Blade" is also such a killer song, in fact those two are some of the best sounding GBV recordings i've heard. The production is gritty but powerful, and they sound like they could be from the same sessions, possibly with Kim Deale involved.
@@alaskatoburningmen4549 No such thing as the greatest GBV tune, but we could comfortably suggest that He's the Uncle has tied for that honour (the only question is how many songs share the space). Glad to hear you mention Color Of My Blade; so brilliant. Another gem amongst gems. I also agree with Michael Ruby that Echos Myron is in the top top top shelf. So, who is going to turn this into a top 30 or 40 list? It really is what needs to happen, because the catalogue is just too wild and brilliant and people's suggestions are helping me a great deal.
@@robertmcmanus9185 Absolutely right! I actually find my self loving so many of those non-album tracks from the mid to late 90's .Songs like: "Titus And Strident Wet Nurse", "Time Machines","Why Did You Land", "James Riot" "Finks", ("I'll Name You) The Flame That Cries", "The Ascended Master's Grogshop" , "Running Off With the Fun-City Girls", "Perfect This Time" or "Fly Into Ashes" (the last two from the early 00's), like you say, it's endless! All these songs are absolutely top-shelf in my opinion. Of course, hits like : "Echos", "Motoraway", "Watch Me Jumpstart" "Game Of Pricks" etc. also belong there... There are few artists quite like Pollard in this world.
@@alaskatoburningmen4549 Beatles through a cement mixer? Wow. There's a brilliant way to see it. Thanks! I love the idea. So, now that I'm burning a best of cd (Yep, some of us dinosaurs and groundhogs still have cd burners and listen to discs) I found out just how hard it is to pick 20 odd songs, let alone ten. That said, I'm going to give it a try. I don't think I'll be able to order them, but "He's The Uncle" looks like my choice for top after a lot of dithering and evaluation. Shockingly good.

this is truly the ultimate task.. i'm willing to give it a try but i can't be so sure about the outcome: may be not so definitive cause i have a very volatile mind. and also cause of new songs every few months. -10. Thank you so much for making this GBV series! I've listened to it multiple times over the past few years. If you ever get the itch to do some more, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Bob's solo records :)
Okay, thanks to all those who put down their favourite tracks. For those who were able to put them in order, I'm impressed; it was very tough for me so it's far from exact. I was looking at people's favourites so I could burn a best of cd and it was tough to narrow things down to the 29 songs that fit on the cd. Here are my 10 favourites as of right now (probably set to change before midnight tonight). My apologies to Michael Ruby for ripping off his top two, but I think he's correct. 1. He's The Uncle 2. Echoes Myron 3. Teenage FBI 4. Bulldog Skin 5. Hold On Hope 6. Chasing Heather Crazy 7. Dodging Invisible Rays 8. Chasing Heather Crazy 9. Glad Girls 10. The Best Of Jill Hives It's hard to think that Tractor Rape Chain, Exit Flagger, Pretty Bombs, Game of Pricks, Everywhere With Helicopter etc. didn't make it, but, after all, there's only ten songs.

Sad to see you go Jeff, you were a life saver during lockdown after discovering the podcast last year. Hopefully you'll still put the odd podcast out. As for my top 10 it changes all the time depending on what era of GBV i'm into at the particular time, For now it's... 1. Sing for Your Meat 2. The Official Iron Man Song 3. Twilight Camp Fighter 4. Red Men and Their Wives 5. Volcano 6. Pretty Bombs 7. My Son, My Secretary and My Country 8. Christian Animation Torch Carriers 9. Window of My World 10. Sad If I Lost Changes all the time though...anything from Exit Flagger to Planets Own Brand. Just depends what i'm into at the time.
T. Rey, thanks for this. This band has such an enormous catalogue. I appreciate you taking the time to educate the neophytes and people like myself who have just not delved all the way into the mountain of brilliance that this band has produced.
Solid list - although I'm of the mind that a top 10 is futile with this catalog (especially since it's arbitrary to leave out Pollard solos and side projects). If we're talking GBV tracks only, I prefer the lower-fi versions of Teenage FBI and Crocker's Favorite Song (though neither are in my top 10). In no particular order, I'm also a big fan of Toby and need to give a shout for 1. 14 Cheerleader Coldfront. I'm with the commenter above with 2. Everyone Thinks I'm a Raincloud and 3. Peephole, both of which are right up there for me. 4. Avalanche Aminos on Do the Collapse is outstanding, same goes for 5. James Riot off the suitcases (though I might be suffering from recency bias with the Hot Freaks series). 5. Picture Me Big Time. 6. Crutch Came Slinking. 7. Buzzards and Dreadful Crows. 8. Gold Star for Robot Boy. 9. Surgical Focus. 10. Unleashed! The Large-Hearted Boy (Hon. Mentions - just to raise an objection from earlier Aural podcast reviews, I think Cool Planet & Let's Go Eat the Factory are underappreciated albums in the classic lineup reboot era; not mid-90s great but some great great work, and it gave us the gift of Demos falling down on Letterman). Thanks, Jeff - your series has been great. Well done (and nice backdrop - I hope you get a 10/10 on Room Rater!).
Unnnnleeeaaaashed laaaaaaaarge heaaaarted booooooooy////oh yeah that's a good song...thinking about making a top ten is a seriously daunting task. The demo of Teenage FBI and Pollards vocal on it is freaking amazing and no studio version can touch it. Yeah I see you have Buzzards and Crutch Came Slinking on there too. That makes me rethink the top 10 list I was trying to craft.
Some nice picks here. I'd never heard Unleashed before. As a 70's punk rock guy who has seen many of the classic punk acts of the day this one was a pleasant surprise. Thanks for taking the time!

Jeff, I just finished reading your book a few weeks ago and I was blown away. It's sooo good! The amount of detail in each analysis is staggering, and as a consequence I've been going back and listening to some of the records I neglected upon initial release, particularly the ones made after the 2012 reunion. I'm not sure if I could make a definitive top 10 given how many amazing tracks I'd have to leave off, but "Tractor Rape Chain" would have to be on it. Keep it up, good sir. You're doing the Lord's (of overstock?) work.

I'll have to have a think about this, but Don't Stop Now and Tractor Rape Chain would certainly be in mine too. Great to see props for the criminally underrated Forever Since Breakfast. Likewise Earthquake Glue.
Hope to see more videos in the future! I discovered this channel recently and really enjoy your book! Maybe some of the solo albums or favorite live clips would be cool!
@@fliptag nope, sorry; maybe it five years or so I'll do a wrap up of everything that's come out in that time; otherwise, it's back to just being a fan for me
I'm a relative GBV rookie - I'm from Bob's hometown but only started listening about 6 years ago. Anyway, my stab at it (not in order): 1. Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox 2. Weedking 3. Lethargy 4. Best of Jill Hives 5. Tractor 6. Wished I Was a Giant 7. Official Ironmen Rally 8. Watch Me Jumpstart 9. As We Go Up We Go Down 10. Waves

DAFIZZIF you've reminded me of a couple of gems I lost track of. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time. Maybe one day I'll be able to distill it down to the 20 best tracks, but, I'm not so sure. That said, your list is golden.
@@robertmcmanus9185 Thanks! Even since then, I have grown to love _Alien Lanes_ more and more and would definitely have to make some room for "Strawdogs" and especially "Little Whirl"... I think I may be a bit of Tobin Sprout apologist/stan xD Also "Smothered in Hugs" moves up since it is probably the best shoegaze song ever made by a non-shoegaze band. Finally, "Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox" _clicked_ after seeing so many people hyping it up, so that would have to make the list now too. I love how dynamic this list can be based on mood/actually paying attention to deeper cuts. Part of why I am proud to call GBV my favorite band.

I think Bob at some point claimed he hated it.As i remember it Ric Ocasek pressured them to record it for DTC and Bob wanted to put "Fly into Ashes" and a few others (maybe "Perfect This Time" ) on there instead. Both those songs are, as most of us know, timeless and stellar pop songs but who knows, they probably wouldn't have reached the airways anyway...Mainstream success in the 90's was a very elusive thing, look no further than GBV or The Posies for proof.
Impossible task, but Navigating Flood Regions, Cut out witch, GoldHrtMt Top, Pop Zeus and 14 cheerleader Coldfront are very tough to leave out. Collaborations are okay by me. Don't get the enthusiasm for The Other Place at all, but clearly a minority opinion.

Where's he going?
so long & thanks for all the podcasts, Jeff! I enjoyed it a lot even when I extremely disagreed with your opinions (mostly regarding Alien Lanes, but yknow, to each their own)
my top 10n:
10. Indian Was an Angel
9. Johnny Appleseed
8. Don't Stop Now
7. Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox
6. Everybody Thinks I'm A Raincloud
5. Space Gun
4. Taco, Buffalo, Birddog and Jesus
3. Cigarette Tricks
2. Pendulum
1. Peephole (which is also just my favorite song by any band of all time forever)
nice top ten; "Peephole" is a great choice; I have to look up "Taco, Buffalo, Birddog and Jesus"; I don't know that one
heck yeah, Jonny Appleseed and Pendulum would make my top ten as well. My top ten would have to have Dust Devil and We've Got Airplanes from King Shit...Matter eater Lad...so many tracks from Under the Bushes...Everyday from Sandbox.....its basically an impossible task to make a GBV top ten, isn't it?
@@AnannatNG yeah, I almost upped this to "top 20" just because ten was too tough
Just revisiting - fantastic work, sir.
I like Drag Days - Liars Tale - Echos Myron - Tractor Rape Chain - Motor Away - Key Losers - As We Go Up...
10. Once in a While
9. Ex-Supermodel (snoring gets on my nerves tho)
8. Please Freeze Me
7. Red Gas Circle
6. Sentimental Wars
5. Dorothy's a Planet (suitcase demo)
4. You're Not an Airplane
3. Weedking
2. Class Clown Spots a UFO (Suitcase 3 version)
Honorable Mentions: Over The Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox, Ester's Day, basically anything off Alien Lanes that isn't Ex-Supermodel or the number 1 spot, To Remake the Young Flyer, Cut Out Witch, basically anything off August By Cake that isn't Sentimental Wars
and the winner is
1. Always Crush Me
He's the Uncle, Your Name is Wild !
1. He's The Uncle
2. Echos Myron
3. Blimps Go 90
4. Buzzards & Dreadful Crows
5. Indian Fables
6. Navigating Flood Regions
7. Jar Of Cardinals
8. 14 Cheerleader Coldfront
9. Color Of My Blade
I actually find my self loving so many of those non-album tracks from the mid to late 90's
.Songs like: "Titus And Strident Wet Nurse", "Time Machines","Why Did You Land", "James Riot" "Finks", ("I'll Name You) The Flame That Cries", "The Ascended Master's Grogshop" , "Running Off With the Fun-City Girls", "Perfect This Time" or "Fly Into Ashes" (the last two from the early 00's), like you say, it's endless! All these songs are absolutely top-shelf in my opinion.
Of course, hits like : "Echos", "Motoraway", "Watch Me Jumpstart" "Game Of Pricks" etc. also belong there...
There are few artists quite like Pollard in this world.
Glad you love "He's The Uncle" btw, it really is a gem of gems.
"Beatles through a cement-mixer", dripping with nostalgia and melancholia.

Nice list Jeff - one could probably make a new top ten for GbV once a week for a year
Thomas , U R right. i have 3+ top tens that are almost interchangeable .
aí sim mano. Robert Pollard é a lenda
this is truly the ultimate task.. i'm willing to give it a try but i can't be so sure about the outcome: may be not so definitive cause i have a very volatile mind. and also cause of new songs every few months.

That was a very classy and tasty outro to the whole project.
Thank you so much for making this GBV series! I've listened to it multiple times over the past few years. If you ever get the itch to do some more, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Bob's solo records :)
Love this! I agree with so much of it. 👍
1. He's The Uncle
2. Echoes Myron
3. Teenage FBI
4. Bulldog Skin
5. Hold On Hope
6. Chasing Heather Crazy
7. Dodging Invisible Rays
8. Chasing Heather Crazy
9. Glad Girls
10. The Best Of Jill Hives
It's hard to think that Tractor Rape Chain, Exit Flagger, Pretty Bombs, Game of Pricks, Everywhere With Helicopter etc. didn't make it, but, after all, there's only ten songs.
Chasing Heather Crazy isn't good enough to warrant two spots...
@@absolutelynonameslef Hahaha!! Thanks. Very good point indeed. Your comment is my fave for any I've ever received!! 3. We Liken the Sun
4. How to Murder a Man (In 3 Acts)
5. Hang Mr. Kite
6. Slopes of Big Ugly

you're too kind
Sad to see you go Jeff, you were a life saver during lockdown after discovering the podcast last year. Hopefully you'll still put the odd podcast out. As for my top 10 it changes all the time depending on what era of GBV i'm into at the particular time, For now it's...
1. Sing for Your Meat
2. The Official Iron Man Song
3. Twilight Camp Fighter
4. Red Men and Their Wives
5. Volcano
6. Pretty Bombs
7. My Son, My Secretary and My Country
8. Christian Animation Torch Carriers
9. Window of My World
10. Sad If I Lost
Changes all the time though...anything from Exit Flagger to Planets Own Brand.
In no particular order, I'm also a big fan of Toby and need to give a shout for
1. 14 Cheerleader Coldfront. I'm with the commenter above with
2. Everyone Thinks I'm a Raincloud and
3. Peephole, both of which are right up there for me.
4. Avalanche Aminos on Do the Collapse is outstanding, same goes for
10. Unleashed! The Large-Hearted Boy
(Hon.

The Enemy is a masterpiece. I always used it to test new sound systems.
How about Gleemer for a Tobin Sprout song?

@@DAFIZZIF Given how much I loved your list I can guarantee I'm listening to all the tracks you mention soon (I know Smothered in Hugs and maybe Strawdogs, but, I'll dig in and check!). @@robertmcmanus9185 Oh yea. Why is Hold on Hope controversial?
