Gosh, you've passed 500 books from your original list of 1,315! 🎉🏆 I'm reading a collection of Checkhov short stories at the moment for the Checkhovember Readathon. Such beautiful writing, but some of them are so poignant. I had to wipe tears from my eyes this afternoon as I walked along after finishing one of them. 😭
Great to see you! Congratulations on your progress despite everything that life has thrown at you this year. You are so close to cracking 800 - that must be exciting!
You're here, you're starting to enjoy reading once again, and the overall goal of reading from 1001 is still happening - YAY!!!!! Mill on the floss is my least favorite or perhaps 2nd least favorite of the Elliot's I have read. A little like Austen, though, even my least favorites are still good stories and beautifully told/written.
The Prime of Ms Jean Brodie is the rare book where it's good to watch the movie before reading the book, seeing Maggie Smith embody that character definitely improved the reading experience
I haven't yet read anything by Muriel Sparks. I hadn't heard of The Fame Throwers (except from you!) - sorry it didn't work for you. I get what you're saying about the book being chaotic. I just heard another Booktuber talking about The Mill on the Floss. I enjoyed Middlemarch, but that's the only Eliot I have read so far. I do like her wit! I enjoyed your update - enjoy your current reads!
I missed you and it was great to see you ❤️Very good and and quite interesting wrap up 👍🏻 I heard so many things about the Prime of Miss Jean Brody but nobody mentioned it was chaotic. I am also like you, I need to understand what timeline I am reading. I have the book on my TBR and I need to try a chapter video for that one 🤔 About the goals, life happens and we sometimes need to adapt them. I think I am having less and less goals for each year I am here 😉
Good to see you again! I am also failing my goals, I am still not adapted to my new relationship. I wish he understood it a bit more how important reading is for me. He is supportive, but... he doesn't really get it and is trying to talk to me all the time. Currently reading: The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende (not loving it too much) Anna Karenina (mixed with others it's okay, alone it would be too much) Just finished: Beloved by Toni Morrison (absolutely loved it!) Watchmen by Alan Moore (this was brilliant!)
I have been with my husband for 22 years and he STILL doesn't always understand. He appreciates that I like to read but doesn't always like that I have a book with me. Hang in there!
I’ve read four books by Eliot and liked them all. _Mill_ has not been one I’ve given much priority to, but I’m glad to hear your positive report. I dislike time jumps in a book, even something as basic as, After the passage of a decade… But if I must, at least plain sequentiality will work for me - none of that jumping around like in a movie with flashbacks!
I'm reading My Name is Barbra by Barbra Streisand. It's been steadily good for me but it's about 950 pages and I'm only halfway through it. I got it from the library. I've had to renew it twice already and it's due December 2nd. I should be able to finish it. I've always been a fan of her and it's neat to be able to watch most of the performances she mentions in the book on youtube.
I got so totally sidetracked with all the competitive readathons that my 1001 list progress has lagged. I'm hoping to get organized though so that for 2025 I know how many I have left to read. I love the idea of counting down, though, once I get my listchallenges checklist updated correctly. Of the 11 books so far that I was supposed to specifically read in specific months, I think I finished maybe 2 so far. Hopefully 2025 will be better for reading the big lists. :) I was not a fan of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie either. My favorite of her List books is Momento Mori.
Back to it- that’s what counts. Was great reading with you. I am reading Promised Land by Obama as well as Wild by Cheryl Strayed for non fiction nov thinking they were perfect for the times I’m in but I’m not sure now that I am into them- more inclined just to listen to audiobook The Ember Blade a chunky fantasy. That’s the beauty about books right?
I have The Good Soldier Svejk to read yet. I may put this off for a while after your video. I also don’t care for books that have chaotic sequence either. It just frustrates me because in my opinion a prime reason to write a book is to connect with readers. Books like this don’t ever connect with me. I’m glad you are back to reading. I assume now you are past the learning curve of your job and your brain now has room for more reading! Yay!
I think Rachel Kushner is not for me. I read Creation Lake as it was on the Booker short list and was glad it didn't win. And 6 books for book club sounds good. So close to the 700s!!!
Amazing update, Sandy. The Mill on the Floss really was so wonderfully charming. And that ending - woah.
The Mill on the Floss is SO good! So glad you enjoyed it! Hooray for progress on your massive project! :)

Yay you're back to it! I really like The Mill on the Floss too. Daniel Deronda is my fav of hers so far (I still need to read Romola and MM).
Your progress on this project is so impressive Sandie
Your progress on this project is still impressive. Hoping 2025 goes better for you.

The Good Soldier Svejk and a Rachel Kushner. Oof, that would break my spirit. Good for you for persevering and being close to the 700s!

I love this project idea daunting as it is. I look forward to following you through the journey!
Thank you so much!
I loved The Mill on the Floss so much. Good to see you.

So glad to have you back! I've missed you. It sounds like maybe Middlemarch is your favorite George Eliot.
Thank you so much!
Hey, you made a lovely dent. Glad to see ya on the tube❤
Thanks! Hopefully it is the start of a trend!
So good to see a video from you again! Hope you're able to get a lot of good reading done as the year winds up.
taking it slow"ish". trying not to overwhelm myself at the end of the year

Slow progress is still moving forward! You can do it!
Thank you! I am happy with the progress even if it doesn't get me quite where I wanted at year end.

I'm with you re The Flamethrowers, didn't like it at all. And I'm really looking forward to do the Bookclub with 6 books next year! Yes!
Me too!

I've never read George Eliot but her books sound good. Which one is your favorite?
