I bought three Eagle Eyes with serrated blades. I use them cutting plastic wrap at work. I worked there for 5 years and use one the entire time. I also bought the small ones in Alaska in different colors. I sometimes think knife collectors live on a different planet. The steel on them sharpens fine. They sold them in Goldfish jars for 99 cents. I still have a half dozen left. I have other famous models too,Delta Ranger, Navy Seal and Frost Dragon Fly. Knives don’t have to be state of the art; they just have tto be fun to collect.😅🤣😂

Many years ago I had a Frost pocket knife come completely apart in my hand when I opened it . I was amazed to have a hand full individual parts 😱

This week I picked up a few knives on eBay and two of them were Frost. Got my first Steel Warrior Choctaw in a beautiful Brown Bone and I really love it! One of my favorite aerial views from 20k feet is flying out of Colorado past Comb Ridge, Utah over the Glen Canyon and Lake Powell area en route to Vegas. Holding this knife in hand the scales are the same color and the little ridges and canyons carved into the bone NS look exactly like the view of that landscape from the airplane window! It’s uncanny and I had to have it! It’s a damn fine knife too! The other Frost was actually a Copperhead Creek lockback. It was only $14 and not nearly of the same quality as the Choctaw but it’s not bad. It looks like a small Buck 110 (3” blade) and what I like about it is that it solves the reason I never carry a 110 (except in cold weather in the pocket of an M-65 jacket dog walking).. a 110 imho is just too heavy and large for regular pants pocket carry year round. This solves that problem and allows me to edc this style of lockback. There’s a slight blade wobble that a Buck wouldn’t have but not that bad. The lock bar was a little sharp on its sides but a file smoothed that right down. It’s a good working /chore knife!
I also have a couple Mustang (another Frost brand for those who may not know) locking Copperheads in Mojave Bone that are just gorgeous and I really love their unique locking mechanism! And I also have a near mint old Japanese Frost locking folder with a wonderfully detailed scrimshaw scene of mallards taking off from a pond! Its blade has the overall profile in silhouette of your Eagle Eye although it looks quite a bit larger and has no eye but rather a thumb stud.
My experience with Frost knives has been great and I’d recommend them to anyone! Of course they do have some knives (like their firefighter’s rescue folder) that imho common sense says to stay away from but as far as goes the knives they themselves take seriously and try to do a good job with imho they’re great and I certainly plan to buy more! Thanks for this video, I really liked all the knives shown!

I love the Frost traditional folding knives. I have several with German stainless steel blades. Sure they're not as good of quality as our Case knives but the bone handles are beautiful.

You mentioned their line called Bulldog in this video. I bought a couple of 3-blade sodbusters made by Frost, one in ox horn and one in blue bone. The ox horn came in a Bulldog box, the blue bone came in a Steel Warrior box, but both have the Bulldog emblem. Oh Frost.

This was neat to see! I like the looks of the Choctaw. I've got nothing against Frost knives, but I only happen to own one of them. It's a Steel Warrior muskrat that belonged to a good friend of mine, he carried that dang thing every day and used it for just about everything that you're not supposed to use a knife for. When he passed away, his sister gave me that knife. I never carry it because it's priceless to me. Funny how a $7 knife can earn a place of honor in your collection. Cheers, buddy!

Always like hearing positive things about some Frost knives. I'm a fan, Frost was the company that got me into knives and collecting, cause they were the only ones I could afford growing up. Funny enough, I'm not a fan of the choctaw series for the exact opposite reason, they're too small for my hands. I like the Buck 110 clones they have, the ones from Ocoee River and Trophy Stag lines are decent spine locks.

    Hi Tobias:
Frost can definitely be OK. The only one of your “Big Three” I have is the copperlock. Nice little knife. Haven’t yet pulled the trigger on the Choctaw. Still deciding on which size. 🤔

I have a SWB Copperhead w/ secondary pen blade. It was my EDC for 3 years. The bone is almost amber in color from use and the pen blade is very worn. It now is a safe queen for faithful service.

I really like Frost knives. Thanks for showing these Tobias.. I have a full size trapper and a "sod buster Jr." type model that are not bad. And, I have the locking copperhead and a larger stockman.. They are all not bad for the price. Very similar to RR in quality from my experience. Depends on the model..

I have a Frost stockman knife, jigged bone scales, mismatched and poor fit but I like the knife. I have an old Parker- Frost Bulldog which had plastic scales that quickly fell off. A coworker made me a set of black walnut scales that were cool. One of them fell off but I still have the knife.

I love the chocktaws. When I want a nice knife with good fit and finish, I generally don't go for the Frost variety. There are certain qualitative aspects of Frost knives that really annoy me. But what I really enjoy about them is feeling free to modify them without the pressure of ruining its collection value. Also, they can be procured pretty cheaply. As a result, I seem to have a lot of them in my collection; and then I'm asking myself, "How is it that I have all these Frost knives??" It's baffling, and sometimes embarrassing.

Not to forget the nice coloured wood Frost put's on the handles/scales. I would be happy to buy all three examples. I might even try the Eagle Eye with the bone handle. Not the greatest steel, not a GEC fit and finish, but also you're not paying for that. Thank you Tobias.

I have heard from Todd Boone (on the show) that the name "Frost Wood" pre-dates Jim Frost's use of the multi-color wood. Apparently the terms came from someone else. However Jim Frost was quick to adopt multi-color pakkawood. The wood sharing his name was just a happy coincidence and the colorful wood really took off once he started using it.

I don’t believe that I have handled a Frost knife. Not that I have anything against them, just never ran across them. I believe the saying that someone enjoyed their knife until the internet told them it was junk. I don’t like knife shaming and let people enjoy what they like. It’s their money after all.

This is a good showing for the Frost Steel Warriors. I "discovered" the steel warrior line maybe 8-9 years ago when I got my first knife ever from smkw, it was the SW117MOP 5-blade Stockman a real beauty. Then I tried a couple of Copperheads which I agree are fantastic knives for their price. But then I tried the Field Dog Peanut SW-465WSB and was very disappointed. The blade is fine but the scissors are worthless, so meh on them but 2 out of 3 ain't bad. What I have discovered is that generally speaking Frost Cutlery knives made in Japan (1980's-90's?) are of excellent quality again for the price.

Glad to see this topic! Much as I love Rough Ryder and the other SMKW brands it always strikes me as odd that Frost, a company that had been sourcing great and unique traditional pocketknives out of China for decades, is so often maligned
My pick for unfairly overlooked Frost is the Bulldog Brand Peanut. I have one in black horn and it’s easily as nice as my Rough Ryder Peanuts. In fact I end up carrying it more than my Case TruSharp model

Not gonna lie, I wish they'd make a bigger version of those sw101s. Its a mighty fine knife for what it is, but one with a bigger handle and 4-5 inch blade would be an excellent budget option for hunters. I've seen them in so many handle materials, its a collectable knife, just a bit small.

The Frost Copperhead is a neat little knife. It’s one of the very few Frosts that are worth buying. Not all Frosts are junk but considering you can often find a Rough Ryder in the same or similar pattern and materials for 10-20% less, it makes very little sense to buy a Frost Trapper for example when for a couple of dollars less, you can just get a Rough Ryder which 9 out of 10 times will be a better knife overall.
I have never seen a Pakastani made Frost that could be described as anything other than junk. Some of the Chinese made Frosts are decent.
I enjoy my locking Frost Copperhead and would buy a few more Frosts if I knew they were decent but it’s such a gamble that I think people have become leery of Frosts after getting burned on the crappy ones.
I don’t feel bad for Frost. They have the reputation that they deserve for selling a whole lot of junk for a whole lot of years.

I only own three frost knives and two of them have very bothersome QC issues. The third one is the lunchbox peanut knife which is actually a good knife. My main complaint on it is it is too wide (for such a tiny knife) based on the liners/underliners they have. I know frost does make some good knives so it is frustrating that 2/3 I have were not great out of the box. I will probably try a couple more out based on your suggestions. The frost knives you have here look pretty good honestly.

So I have a bunch (12) of Frost Japan knives, so I don’t know if those are technically the frost knives ppl bust on, I think they might have been made by Parker, cuz the knives are similar to Parker japan knives I own. But the frost Japan knives that I own have either bone or frost wood handles. They’re really nice actually, and I enjoy collecting them. Only own 1 steel warrior, it’s a 5 blade congress and it’s not that great, def below rough Ryder quality. I tend not to buy too many of the Pakistan frost knives, cuz I have such a hard time getting a stable edge on them. And like you, their jigging is not a style I like. I can almost always tell that it’s a Pakistani knife, as soon as I see that camel bone and odd jigging.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think when the knives were first being made in Japan, they caught a lot of flak. Now some 30-40 years later, these are held up as "Quality knives!" Parker Frost did indeed do quite a bit of collaboration so many of the knives are similar in style and quality.
I know the 5 blade Congress you're talking about. They used to call it a "Kentucky Congress." I have it a couple of them as I collect the Congress pattern. They are definitely a disappointing knife. The clip blade down the middle also has a very strange blade geometry. I think that five blade congress is one of the knives that give Frost a bad name. Frost has some of the ugliest jigging out there. They do have some nice jigging patterns but of them are downright awful in my opinion.
