  • In this video I have a look at a customers 2016 Chevy 1500 5.3 that has a customer complaint of an EVAP leak. All of us in the rust belt are pretty familiar with these rot box Chevy's and their EVAP leaks so I was pretty surprised when the customer told me he had it at two shops and they both told him there was NO LEAK! Needless to say I was disappointed after recording this one to find out Hellen Keller could have found this one.

    Sorry, but I have to start pinning this until I learn how to speak clearly again. I am not having a stroke nor do I have bell’s palsy, a brain tumor or MS. I do not have ALS or a migraine. Please stop calling my shop to notify me or Mrs.O that I can not speak clearly. I am very aware of my inability to "pronunciate" words like I use to and she is also aware of my slurred speech. We live together and work together and I even talk to her. I have an upper palate expander in my mouth. It interferes with my tongue. Shcrews up my shpeech . Thank you for your concerns.

    • @redmondjp
      @redmondjp ปีที่แล้ว +16

      To be fair, the leak is on the top side of the tank, so the 'smoke' (actually oil vapor) dissipates and is harder to see if one is just looking underneath the vehicle. But any competent (emphasis on that word) mechanic should have found this, on that we can agree. The trouble is, in every arena of life these days, it is getting harder to find competent workers, for many different reasons that are too numerous to discuss here.

    Once again, you prove the difference between a diagnostician and a parts changer.....you UNDERSTAND the correlation between the various components and their interaction with each other. The knowledge is out there, but sadly most of the paycheck mechanics just go by the tests, and if the issue doesn't jump out at them, they pass it on out the shop. I spent a 40-year career in a field where troubleshooting was a vital part of our job, and trying to find someone with the SELF DRIVE to actually FIND the trouble was always a challenge! He said he was testing something a few days ago. My guess is he is trying to grow viewership with shorts. So many people scroll endlessly through shorts and don't browse the youtube so I think the hope is to get some of those people subscribing and watching full length videos. He's been making the full video public the following morning. I got the bell notifications on so I get notified on everything he posts.

    Today I got my LX470 back from an old shop I used to use. They corrected an improperly installed timing belt that the original shop refused to look at because there was no CEL. I personally knew something was up because I’m used to driving the dang thing. I drove it underpowered like that for almost 2yrs! Kinda sad, but also glad it’s back making power. Maybe I can enjoy it a while more…

    In addition, plaque loves to get caught underneath the plastic in the roof of your mouth (palate). To clean expanders, brush around the bands, plastic, and support arms of your expander, and along the gumline. Additionally, use a proxibrush every time you brush to get into the small, narrow areas.

    Obviously, it has a leak when you check it with the smoke machine. I can’t believe they couldn’t find that leak. I had a problem with my 2008 Honda fit setting P0456. The code only set in the summer in the warm weather, and in the winter code never set. Never had a gas smell. The vent and the purge solenoid, and the gas cap are all good finally figured out it was the evap canister. The previous owner must’ve kept over, filling the tank and wrecked the Evap cannister. I replaced Evap cannister with a used one from the wreckers and it is OK now.

    This is sadly a common problem that I've been hearing a lot .. most "light weight" shops (keeping it family friendly ) will pass along or play dumb when it comes to major jobs like this for all of the obvious reasons one shop even came right out and said to a friend we don't do that here when asked if they would preform the job...😬

    I find it sad that a 2016 vehicle is considered "almost done" at 7 years of use. I grew up in NY and am aware of the fact that cars of the 50's era would rot out fenders and rocker panels by that point in life, but you would almost expect in 60+ years of engineering excellence they could be building stuff that lasted longer.

    Great job Eric. You can do it for sure, but I'm not so sure I can do it. You're advanced diagnostic equipment and knowledge to use it shows why it's increasing difficulty for us shade tree mechanics.
    I've made my own smoke machine with limited success. My scanner is read only. And if I did know about software updates I couldn't do anything about it? It used to be the money light didn't intimidate me, but after losing a couple of battles like this it's putting fear of failure in my soul? So glad that I live in area that emissions testing is mandated!

    Glad that the Vacuum leak was a Big one... worked in Pharma before i retired and we had Ultrasonic Leak detector sniffers connected to Head Phones and you would point around the pipework and flanges and the whistle would be heard in the headphones plus the multi coloured LED lamps would rack up going from green through amber to flashing Red, being as the closer you got to the source of the problem ..great pieces of Kit...saved a fortune in time especially in a noisy location. Great Upload...
