While the show from the 80s may be warning us what the Republican Party could become, we were fools to believe the Democrats would never stoop to such despicable means to maintain power.
I remember seeing this as a 10-12 year old kid in the late 80s over here in Germany ... it was so absolutely different from anything else I'd seen so far, and probably that's why it was so fascinating.
Same, it played in Austria often close to midnight. I was obsessed with everything computer related and/or science fiction back then but I often missed it cause it was way past bedtime for me (but I often tried). We didn't have a VHS recorder yet and I haven't seen it since then, my only memory from that is the Max Headroom character itself and that I always were super tired, everything else faded away. So this was actually interesting to get to know what the show was actually about. ^^
They were trolling us before there was such a thing because they were basically telling us what they were doing and are still doing to us today. And we just can't get enough of it.
People made who stuff like this are cool. They are fighting the man you call "they" by raising awareness. If you actually lived back then you would remember how hardcore censorship was. Don't robb these badass creators of their contribution to the fight against the man.
Oh god this takes me back! I ended up working on the UK Max headroom chat shows back in the day and helped make some of his 'computer' outfits including the smoking jacket and scarf for the Christmas special. Frewer was a great and patient guy. Great times! ETA Oh and I thought the American 'copy' was bloody awful! lol
You kidding? Us Brits were actually happy that the Americans greenlit this TV series at the time. We didn't get this until 1988 and it was aired as a single series.
UK Max Headroom was one of my favourite shows as a teen. Much preferred the video-jockey series over the narrative and interview shows. Frewers monologues were so random yet entertaining due to Frewer's natural charm. I loved all his outfits too. Congrats and thank you to you and your team for creating such an important part of my youthful memories.
I'm always amazed by the accurate predictions of the future that occur, such as Max Headroom. The downside, of course, is you never realize it at the time. You only ever see the accuracy of the prediction in the..... future.
Just a few days ago I was in a meeting at work and mentioned Max Hedroom. Most of my coworkers had no idea who this was. This is what I get for working in tech.
Matt Frewer was awesome in the remake of Dawn Of The Dead (2004). Where as your ideas of a re-born Max Headroom taking on the horrid corporate media machine is totally awesome, it would only happen independently. No TH-cam, NETFLIX or HULU would ever green light something that would fight against the narrative.
I remember watching Max Headroom on Channel 4 starting with this TV movie that started it all in 1985. It was kind of a weird futuristic hybrid. It was also one of Character actor Matt Frewer in the lead role. It was sort of the pioneer of the internet.
Same here. Watched the pilot and then followed his series and Xmas special good times. Incidentally I loved the fact the filming location or part of it was done at the run down beckton gas works in London's docklands which in the following year was used by Kubrick for Full Metal Jacket.
I was such a fan of the series when I was a kid, I built my own Edison Carter video camera out of Legos. I made sure to include a few bright red bricks at the front to represent the big light that lit up when Edison was broadcasting live. You might be pleased to know that, despite having watched several YT videos about Max Headroom over the past couple of years, it was this video--YOUR video--that dredged up that long-forgotten memory. Thanks!
Thanks for this - I LOVED MAX -- SO far ahead of its time in so many ways. And thanks for the shout-out about Matt's career -- and PSI FACTOR. I wrote several episodes of the series and Matt was a dream to work with --- and so much fun. Peter Aykroyd was involved with the first season and had very little to do with it after that. More importantly, his brother Dan our exec producer as well as our Serling-like host for the intro and tag for every episode. Dan was also involved creatively through the show's 88-episode run -- more than Peter was. Matt didn't join the show until the second season (when I did as well) We did some crazy shit! Look for it on TH-cam -- most of it is here.
Jesus christ. Just yesterday I heard for the first time of Max Headroom and today I decided to search about it and I found your video today! Kinda creepy. Your video is really informative and well made!

"In this episode of gone, but NOT forgotten." Had to be: "In this episode of gone, but forgotten." If it was not for these type of videos, no one would have thought of this brilliant spiritless "digital" spirit. Or, as Dr. Alfred Lanning would say it: "The "gostless" gost in the machine."
I was only five or six years old back then and I didn't know the backstory but I do remember the coke commercials and the popularity. I do remember the sudden cancellation right before he completely disappeared. I remember asking my mom why he was canceled with her simply responding " he's rude and he's creepy". What's funny is that my mom worked for Sears and every year I was forced to participate in the Pompano Square Mall's " back to school cuz it's cool" fashion show. Back then each of the stores had their own fashion Consultants which was basically a homosexual who liked to dress the mannequins. One of the only reasons I remembered 1987 was because that was the year they dressed us all like Max Headroomish. I remember them shellacking my hair down to my skull. I had to wash my hair like three times to get that shit out of it. I remembered later when the Movie Honey I Shrunk the Kids came out my mom pointing out that the one old white guy was actually Max Headroom but I was more interested in the guy from Ghostbusters.
Frewer wasn’t that old when he played Big Russ Thompson in “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”. Frewer was in his early thirties. He just looked older due to his receding hairline.
if the hijacking happened in 1987, and the gentleman who was singing was singing a song from 1959, then the gentleman would probably have been at least 28 years old

Frewer's great in almost everything except for this character. I really hated Headroom as an 80s kid, he was so goddamn onboxious.
Maybe it could happen, but only on a channel like Adult Swim (like Space Ghost) and even then he'd be pretty watered down.

Bring it back. It was easy ahead of it's time.
"In this episode of gone, but NOT forgotten."
Had to be:
"In this episode of gone, but forgotten."
If it was not for these type of videos, no one would have thought of this brilliant spiritless "digital" spirit.
Or, as Dr. Alfred Lanning would say it:
"The "gostless" gost in the machine."
You own that 45?
You're THAT old?
I am from 1970, and I feel young as a teen.
Mentally at least.
Needs to come back asap
holy shit, I never realised shephard was father and son on doctor who. thats brilliant
i remember seeing him on channel 4 in the uk in the 80s. i didn't want to watch him, though. found him eerie.
if the hijacking happened in 1987, and the gentleman who was singing was singing a song from 1959, then the gentleman would probably have been at least 28 years old
wait what are the state run tv stations in the uk?
At the time BBC 1 and 2. ITV and Channel 4. ITV is self funded.
I remember this show as a teenager.
"No CGI. Nothing to see here! totally analog dont think that we had modern technology before when we say we did!"
*shows greenscreen* lol
Come on...we all know Rachel maddow of MSNBC is the one they need to take on. Or, if you care about fighting disinformation, you'd want max to take on old Rachel
That is one angry dude that Richard Maddow fella!
How do you miss out his best work in Taken?
William & Mark Sheppard brought to life characters I would grow up to love, as a child & as a teenager. Gods among nerds, indeed.
Greatest scifi series of the 80's
A bit off topic, but honorable mention for W Morgan Shepherd as Confederate General Issac Tremble in Gettysburg/Gods & Generals.
Imagine the fun Max would have with all these lefties on TV spewing what they're told to say by the party.
"Wow here I thought I was the boring talking head" - Max.
Matt Frewer in National Lampoon's Senior Trip is hysterical. Check it out!
great tv series 🙃
I remember him. I was afraid of him as a kid lol
Matt frewer = legendary
I only know Max Headroom from the music video "The art of noise - Paranoia"
