    Thanks Sarah for taking us into this kind of music, too. And for bringing us recorder people out of the shadows! It is so inspiring and I play (and warm up!) a lot more, since I watch your videos. We cannot value it enough that you share these things for free just out of generous reasons! Thank you so much!
    I have experienced with the piece "Gentle Walker" of Zana Clarke (from your recommendation: sing and play-video) and like it a lot! Is there more for voice and flute which is also for intermediate level? So: play on, everybody!

    Great choices as an intro Sarah ... I really enjoyed this sample. It's amazing that more has been written for the recorder since the 1960's than at any other time in history! Makes me want to explore more contemporary recorder music!

    FWIW, the wildly popular calming anime Non-non Biyori has a theme song that features the recorder prominently. It's called Hidamari Michi. The piano accompaniment acts as the tranquil scenery and the main melody is played imperfectly with a recorder by a first-grader. They even have the child play the some notes wrong, but you can listen to the perfect version. I've never found the recorder being so aptly utilized in modern music.

    Sarah, I have been searching for hours, quite literally, for your recording of the Steve Reich piece “Vermont Counterpoint” and found the segment you posted here; but could not find the whole piece. Is it still available? I have listened to a number of recordings with flute(s) but yours is my absolute favorite! Curiously, your version is the first contemporary piece that resonated with me…that I “got!” And opened my ears to other modern music. I love your channel! John

    There are two recorder contemporary pieces I like so much. The first one is "Glass" (from "Minimal Preludes") by Karel Van Steenhoven. The second one is "Thymehaze" (for alto recorder and prepared piano) by John Casken.

    Dearest Sarah, I am a big fan of yours from Germany. I learnt playing the recorder when I was 7 but it fell asleep later. Now I am nearly 50. I can play the Carroll's. I tried the Fantasies from Telemann, but even nr. 10 is too difficult for me. Anyhow you inspire me! I recently bought a tenor recorder.
    Thank you so much!
    By the way ... you are wearing a ring now?

  • @fatweevlogs

    Everytime you talk about contemporary music, it is always those that i find difficult to enjoy as a listener. Might be fun to play but not the kind of music that I can appreciate.
    But I wonder, because I like songwriting and I wonder if I compose a piece for a recorder but using the common anatomy of a song like verses, chorus, etc. Would that be considered as contemporary? Or do I have to make a free form kind of piece in order to be able to be considered as contemporary?
    I am a hulusi player and ive started playing recorder recently. Ive written some pieces for hulusi and i am thinking of making one for recorder.

    Do you feel the modern recorders like the Helder or Mollenhauer Modern instruments are better suited to the modern repertoire?

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It very much depends on the piece, the intentions of the composer, and the taste of the player!

    • @2628064379
      @2628064379 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try and keep my mind open to new music. I'm not a fan of music that incorporates tape or music that uses certain sound clichés that go with this instrument. M. Petri has ben a champion of contemporary music and I own all her CDs. The music that I prefer from her recordings has a form, a tonal basis, and incorporates unusual instruments in the ensemble like the vibraphone or celeste. My favorite music for the instrument is from the early 20th century by Bowen, Rubbra, Scott, Leigh, Berkeley, Koppel, Arnold, and others. I also listen for what instruments sound good to me in combination with the recorder. For example, I much prefer the recorder / piano combination over the recorder / harpsichord sound. For balance in this repertoire, I prefer the modern recorders especially when th4e recorder is paired with a piano.

      Just as I did, you won't find contemporary pieces nice right from the first time you hear them... rather try to approach contemporary music by first listening to pieces like bartóks "concerto for Orchestra" or his "sonata", as well as Stravinsky's "Petrushka" and his famous "Rite of spring" and "Firebird". After that try some even more contemporary pieces and composers like schoenberg, webern, cowell etc. and you will slowly but surely start to understand what's going on...
