Nice. Reminds me of a Memphis 'lp copy i bought for like $135. This in '95 or so. Pretty poor then. Shimmed the neck and worked an import P90 into the neck slot. Played and sounded good but gave it away to family a short time later. Now, out of the box , a LP style for cheap. Y'all got it made.
I have the black version of this guitar. Bought direct from Donner UK, it cost me £100 with free p&p and also came with a substantial pack of picks covering a wide range of gauges. Just as with the guitar you demo'd, mine had no issues and plays faultlessly. The one oddity I've found is that although intonation is excellent all along the fretboard, right up to the 'false 24th' harmonic just above the neck pickup, the guitar's otherwise accurate tuning doesn't seem to like adjusting to a capo. I'm not sure what the neck radius is, but neither my G7th nor my Shubb capos seem to work all that well with it. I'm still experimenting. As with any new budget-priced guitar, changing the strings to install a good or preferred brand and gauge is always recommended. I switched to D'Addario 10/46. Like you, I treated the fretboard which is the unusual Perilla wood. This is MUCH more than just a guitar for beginners. My personal preference was not for the gold tone and volume control knobs on a black instrument, so I switched them for plain, black, knurled knobs with a single arrow as the position indicator. Anyone who is used to playing a standard LP or LP-style guitar may find the thinner body of the Donner slightly strange - but this helps make it ideal for younger players or those less able to bear the weight of a full-on LP. My Donner weighs in at just a tad under 7lbs. It also makes a perfect guitar for couch noodling. Your review and demos are excellent. Good job.

Which fretboard oil did you use on this guitar, which one would you recommend and how often would you use it? Did it take more than one coat? Thank you.
Good question . . I used some Gibson fretboard conditioner, but lemon oil. or almond oil do the trick. I don't do it regularly, I just do it by sight and see when it's looking dry or grubby. 😊😃
I would not oil the board “every string change” as you may have heard- learn from my mistake. Early in my playing life, not only did I oil every change, I marinated it. After awhile, the wood became “spongy”- easy to ding and have little chips come out. Twice a year is fine.
@@dmmedic34 Yes I agree. And even worse than that you can make the wood soft so the frets move or even fall out, and with enough oil the glue that holds the guitar together can soften. 😒
Just having a look they guitars in my rack are the very best if I was gonna have one of those guitars in my rack it would be a Les Paul you know how it is
You didn't approach the intonation check, and how much adjustment was remaining to sharpen or flatten the string length on each string saddle on the tune-o- matic. Have you checked that out, I would be interested to know. That would be a good indicator of build quality as well.
Yes, you are right. I felt a little awkward reviewing this guitar because the setup was perfect (better the a £3000 guitar I reviewed). I didn't even look at how much adjustment was left because it didn't need adjusting. I've just looked now and you can tell it has been setup but there is still adjustment left.
Came across this guitar review by accident. Went straight to the site from Donner but they only had the black colored guitar. For me the colour is not important but can you still get the guitar you reviewed. Just a query. Great review.
Yes, I think they are having the same supply problems everybody else seems to be having. It might be worth asking them to email you when they've got them in 😊
Yeah, I can't wait to start the lessons again. I have to do the reviews and repairs to keep the channel going because they earn way more money than the lessons. 🤔
Impressive review, and impressive guitar, I want one. How dose it hold up compared to epiphone?.. I must say I’ve been looking for a cheap but good Les Paul I think I’m leaning Donner lol
The Epiphone is a slightly better guitar because they are closer to the real thing. But I've still the Donner guitar and it's still working and playing well. I still find the flat top a bit strange because most Les Pauls have a slightly arched top . The big advantage with the Donner is the gig bag (if you need one) because it's a good one. Incidentally, I'll be using the Donner to make some upgrade videos eventually, all being well . . 😊😊
@@guitar-academy wow that sounds awesome! I will be looking out for that. I strangely just want to like the Donner more, I even kind of like that they have their own take on the Les Paul and aren’t copying it 100% and It’s a very attractive guitar. I assume the Epiphone might have higher quality pick ups. Mainly it will come down too which is more comfortable to play 😝
@@SingPsalms I haven't actually done a comparison of one alongside the other. But I know that most of the guitars in the same price range all use very similar pickups . . 😊
i've never had a les paul guitar before, but i can remember someone saying it's heavy and when you've played for a while you can feel the ache lol but like the review said for the donner version that it's light and i think i might like this 👍 quite a few guitar channels i'm subscribed to have also reviewed this guitar and also say it's good value for money and sounds good through their equipment. i'm thinking about a new guitar at the moment and i'm not sure wether to go uncovered or covered pick ups, but definitely 2 humbuckers and fixed bridge as i find i rarely use the tremolo arm on floating bridge guitar that i have now.
Very informative and good attention to detail. I was wondering about the lack of the additional 2 pots as on the other immitations Glen Burton and Firefly that also have good reviews. Finally what is your impression about the Spark amplifier with it's plug and play options as a combination with a less expensive guitar?
The number of pots is purely personal preference. I recently did a review of an Ibanez that cost over £3,000 and that had 2 pots th-cam.com/video/V_lzZlo0u9I/w-d-xo.html My personal opinion is that a Spark or any modelling amp/pedal is a good thing with a cheap guitar, because you can change and improve the sound a lot.
I've been wanting a les paul jr single cutaway style guitar for a while now But most are out of my price range. Harley benton have one but it's currently not available in the sunburst I want. I also. Prefer humbucker ever so slightly to a P90, so I was thinking, would it be worth buying one of these, taking out the neck Pick up and placing on a lp. Jr style pick guard in its place? Would. Only cost me an additional few quid for the pick guard and I can do the electronic work easily.
@@guitar-academy I've been playing for about 16 years (I'm not as good as I should be for all. That time playing 😂) and I have done work on a few guitars and made some Customs. But I've been on a tighter and tighter budget as time. Has gone by since having kids, a low income job and a house with all the bills to pay for lol. I make ends meet but not enough for a guitar above £200 so budget guitars like this and harley benton have been amazing guitars for me. But I'm trying to get my hands on an affordable lp jr. Although I am also looking at the harley benton dc jr.
@@Strangerealities51 Harley Benton are great guitars, especially for the money. I think your idea of taking a cheaper guitar and upgrading the main sound producing components will work and sound great . . 😃😃
Congrats for the guitar!! Great reviews, very calm, detail & good playing!. What is the neck profile of this? Thank you for doing this awesome video!!. Cheers.
I think that's the Donner I would get since I played a Les Paul style in the 80s. Now what small practice amp do you recommend and maybe a multi effect. For around 200 + tax ? The amount of practice amps are overwhelming. I would be using headphones because of living arrangement. Any advice ? Or would you recommend Glarry guitar ?
personally I thing the Donner are better than Glarry, but that's just my opinion. For practising with headphones I would look at multi-effects rather than an amp, but the choice is still huge. 🤔
@@guitar-academy you mean like a multi effect that you can plug headphones right into ? No need for amp ? I have seen the apps that supposedly work that way. Thanks by the way. I have been watching guitar gear vids lately and wanting to get back into playing. The technology is overwhelming compared to 1979 when you just replaced a tube and you were back up and running
@@daviddigital6887 Yeah, most multi-effects and have headphone sockets, and you can even use your phone or tablet with the right input adapter. I have reviewed a number of practise amps and they all have limited scope for editing the effects. Saying that, the Spark is very popular but I don't know much about it. 😊
I can't speak for all of these guitars, but on mine that's normal. It looks a bit strange, but it's just because the original design had an arched top so the neck follows that line which makes it look out of line. If your action is low then nothing is wrong basically.
@@DickieboyBradders I like Strat style too. You will probably find it takes a while to get used to the fact that the frets are closer on this. A Strat has a scale length of 25.5 and Les Paul style 24.75 and you can feel the difference . .
It looks like a good guitar just to buy and give it a swing I’ll do the job it’s got easy tuning bridge and the fact that you can tune the thing is very important there’s no point in having a flood rows and you can’t tune the Qatar will just sit there and it’s not bad at all
I'll compare it too my epiphone special ii intention better on the donner and the neck is so much better not even close but tuners electronic and pickups are better on the special ii but I find the donner does cleans better then distortion were I found the epiphone better with gain then clean
This is a nice guitar, although I think the PUs sound a bit muffled. Apparently about 160 dollar. Dave's World of Fun Stuff had a Donner guitar the day after you, but his one had misaligned strings. How would this do against a Squire Bullet?

Just having a look they guitars in my rack are the very best if I was gonna have one of those guitars in my rack it would be a Les Paul you know how it is
Yes . . fare comment 😊
Gotta get it
😊👍
So whats better forma les Paul stylez, a cheap ephiphone or this ?
The Epiphone Les Paul Jr is twice the price of this one, but if you can afford one, they are well worth the investment 😊
It might be worth asking them to email you when they've got them in 😊
I think the burst is available now.
@@ernestschultz5065 thanks . . very helpful 😃
I have just ordered it. Thanks for the mention, just hope that my one is a good one.

Yeah, I can't wait to start the lessons again. I have to do the reviews and repairs to keep the channel going because they earn way more money than the lessons. 🤔
Thanks for everything

I recently did a review of an Ibanez that cost over £3,000 and that had 2 pots th-cam.com/video/V_lzZlo0u9I/w-d-xo.html
My personal opinion is that a Spark or any modelling amp/pedal is a good thing with a cheap guitar, because you can change and improve the sound a lot.
Can I use DA'ddario Regular light 10-46 strings on this and a DST 102S?
yeah . . if they're the string you like 😊
I've been wanting a les paul jr single cutaway style guitar for a while now But most are out of my price range.
The best thing to do is get a guitar first and when you're sure you like the guitar and the feel of it, then fit a better pickup. . . 🤔
Question.... where the neck meets the body it is not parallel seems to be a slight angle to it but all plays fine is this normal ???
I can't speak for all of these guitars, but on mine that's normal. It looks a bit strange, but it's just because the original design had an arched top so the neck follows that line which makes it look out of line. If your action is low then nothing is wrong basically.
@@guitar-academy no I lowered the action and it's fine never seen before always played strat style guitars thank you 🙏🎸
@@DickieboyBradders I like Strat style too. You will probably find it takes a while to get used to the fact that the frets are closer on this. A Strat has a scale length of 25.5 and Les Paul style 24.75 and you can feel the difference . .
@@guitar-academy yes small hands so probably better 😂🎸

Great suggestion . . I'll put it in my list of videos to do . . 😊
It looks like a good guitar just to buy and give it a swing I’ll do the job it’s got easy tuning bridge and the fact that you can tune the thing is very important there’s no point in having a flood rows and you can’t tune the Qatar will just sit there and it’s not bad at all
Yes . . the tuning and intonation is easy to adjust 😊😃
I'll compare it too my epiphone special ii intention better on the donner and the neck is so much better not even close but tuners electronic and pickups are better on the special ii but I find the donner does cleans better then distortion were I found the epiphone better with gain then clean
good comparison . . 😊
This is a nice guitar, although I think the PUs sound a bit muffled. Apparently about 160 dollar. Dave's World of Fun Stuff had a Donner guitar the day after you, but his one had misaligned strings. How would this do against a Squire Bullet?
Sold,!
😊👍
Know the problem with this? The price is only 30 usd less than an Ibanez AX120 which offers so much more than the Donner that it is a night and day difference in leagues while only being VERY slightly more. In other words Donner is way over charging and this should be about 90-100 pounds or 120-130 USD.
