Please say a prayer for Fr Theophan of Our Lady of the Cedars in Manchester, New Hampshire, who was the one responsible for putting this special prayer book together. He went to his rest just a few weeks before this review was done. May his memory be eternal. And thank you for doing this review and, indeed, all your reviews brother.

I am a cradle Orthodox Christian, and this is my go to! If you have an leather back Orthodox Study bible and this guy your set for a fairly complete horologion and full psalter weekly. They even have rubrics for when to use a home censor. Just ignore the ONE and only ONE reference to the Pope of Rome in the daily intercessions after morning prayer. This IS the best Orthodox prayerbook for anyone looking to have a full rule...My humble opinion....Orthodox review keep up the great work on book reviews..love your channel...

I have the Anthologion as well as the 3rd edition (4th Ed on the way). I have recently drifted back to the Publican’s Prayerbook. I find it much more complete and, for me, more useful at this stage of my life.

The Anthologion did not, in fact, blow the Publican's Prayer Book out of the water.

Your review was, as always, fun and informative despite your "Uneducated" disclaimer.
I upgraded from the 2nd edition to the 4th edition of the Publicans Prayer Book, and glad I did. Money well spent. More than enough material to use with a pocket size New Testament to carry with me.
Thanks to your review of the "Nasser" Five Pounder, I ordered that, and so that means I have to order the Hapgood as well.
Yet, I still await the Anthologion with anticipation. The only way the Anthologion could beat out the Publican is if it had lections as well. Then, I would not need to carry a pocket New Testament with me.
Still hoping I can afford to support your channel soon. I'm on a fixed income and paying off bills. No one else seems to be reviewing Orthodox books, and your videos are great.

First learned about the 12 psalms in 2000 at a Roman Catholic Monastery. It's interesting to see all the different formats and translations of them.

Good review, but since I have owned the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions, it looks like you were actually holding the 1st edition and not the 3rd. The size difference between the 1st and 3rd editions is comparable to what you have here between the 3rd and the 4th editions. The prayers for the Dead were added to the Second Edition, which, by oversight dropped the prayers for the unborn. The second also removed some very ugly iconography. The Third added the Akathist of Thanksgiving, the mini horologion, the full canon of St. Andrew of Crete, and the Homily on the Theotokos by St. Proclus. There is about 130 more pages added to the 4th Edition as compared to the 3rd.
I was friends with the late Father Theophan Paul Leonarczyk, who put these books together. Father Theophan died April 17, 2021, of cancer, so memory eternal! I gave him the original Greek text for Proclus's Homily. Father Theophan envisioned this book as a successor to Archbishop Raya's Byzantine Daily Worship (BDW) of 1969. He did look at other Orthodox prayer books, including the Jordanville, but BDW was the primary model. Over ten years ago, the Melkites proposed an Orthodox Liturgy of the Hours (LOTH), a several volume Horologion set modeled after the Roman LOTH, but cost killed the plan.
With the Orthodox LOTH off the table, Father Theophan started small back in 2006, with Bishop Samra's backing. Over the years the demand for this book, plus suggestions for improvement from laity and clergy let to improvements and changes over the years. Father Theophan envisioned this book as a sort of "Byzantine Breviary." He was able to examine the Roman Baronius 1960 Breviary and if you watch the video, you will see that the ribbons are no longer clumped together as in editions 1, 2, and 3, but spread out. The book was also moved to hardcover for durability.

Agreed - I have the 3rd edition “revised and expanded” which includes a lot of what is mentioned here as being new. I especially value in it the Small Horologion. I’m in two minds about ordering a copy of this 4th edition. Do you think the extra material would warrant that? It might be useful to have a spare copy in any event.
The Small Horologion may be a more practicable solution than what is offered by the Anthologion though that looks to be an especially appealing and valuable prayer book, but without the range of other prayers offered by the Publicans Prayerbook.
I am looking forward to Orthodox Review’s video review of the Anthologion. This is the only substantive review so far of this 4th edition of the PPB, so thank you sir!

What a very great pity too that cost prevented the production of an Orthodox LOTH. One day, God willing?

Michael, I am taking the route of both the 4th Edition and the Anthologion. The books will be complementary to each other. To say one is better than the other is merely subjective.
But a loth horologion? A draft outline was that there would be 12 volumes, built around the menaion, the hours, the psalter and synaxarion, with additional volumes for prelent/lent and pascha. Each volume would contain both slavic and greek usage variants. Canons would be included where appropriate. The paraclesis office would be in the August volume. I recall it was going to be a 14 volume set.

    • @mscargill1

@@jamesignatiusmcauley8118 thank you for your reply. I think I am inclined to agree with you in regarding both books as complimentary to each other. The PPB 4th Ed has the advantage of including the Canons for the 12 Major Feasts and a complete daily listing of saints. The Anthologion has the advantage of a much fuller provision for the daily cycle of offices.
One question I have raised with the Anthologion publishers (and am awaiting an answer on) is what you do when no saint is listed for the day? If I have viewed correctly the snap shots of the table of feasts at the front of the book, it seems that not every day is listed with its saint. Is this because on those days listed with a saint in the PPB but not in the Anthologion, the saint’s commemoration has no ranking - ie not even 5th class - but is just a “commemoration” and so no “common” menaion troparion , etc need be prayed for the saint in the day’s office? In the PPB, you are directed to the appropriate common troparion to use for every saint listed for every day of the year. I also note, however, that in the BDW, many daily saints (so to speak) are listed as “commemorations”. Other than for major feasts of Our Lord and the Theotokos, it seems that the BDW does not attempt to rank each saint’s celebration as the Anthologion does (although in its front matter it does provide detailed instructions on “How to determine the Troparia and Kontakia of the Divine Office” which is broken down into the five classes of feasts and even deals with concurrences).
If you could shed any light on my confusion here, I would be very grateful. Best wishes.
