  • There are quilters and then there are the amazing women who sew quilts in Gee’s Bend, Alabama. You may know the story of how their work went from unknown to highly collectible, shown in museums and galleries all over the world. This spring, some of those quilts and two of their makers came to Kansas City, thanks to a pair of parishioners at the Country Club Congregational Church in Brookside. Producer Ashley Holcroft looked in on this colorful cross-cultural collaboration. This story connects nicely to our Beyond Belief project, looking into how faith connects the people of Kansas City--not just in terms of worship but how it can help cross racial and ethnic divides. On June 23rd, KCPT will air a 30 minute documentary devoted to those themes.
KCPT, Kansas City Public Television 19, Inc.

What a coincidence. I just made a baby blanket out of the exact fabric block with the map on it that they showed at :49 on Saturday. And I just took it out of the washing machine right before I clicked on this video. And I wasn't even searching for this video, specifically. How weird is that?

I got to see and feel their quilts in Newark, N.J. What an experience, I would love to visit them and take any workshop classes they have.

Why do we need to hear this story secondhand from the perspective of a white woman?
