I have always sewn. But never tried quilting. Until October, 2019. I am 70 this year and I am a quilting addict. I have 15 grandchildren and 9 g-grandchildren. My precious babies are the recepients of my love. I love this gift that Jesus has given me.
Thank you, Joe Cunningham, for highlighting the Gees Bend quilters - they are my inspiration! I love it that you went to quilt with them and learn from them - these ladies are beautiful. Their work is so alive and full of their hearts and souls
The Gees Bend Quilts are absolutely wonderful! So are these talented soulful women; it would be a thrill and honor to sit and quilt with them. Lindsay, artist and quilter, Sacramento, California.
My Great Grandmother, Grandmother and Aunt were quilt makers. My Great grand used mostly scraps and flour sacks for her quilts. They were intended to be utilitarian. As a child, sleeping under one of her quilts was so comforting. My favorite quilt was one she made from flannel shirt pockets. The backing was faded red denim. It was beautiful. The Gees Bend quilts remind me of Grandma Casey's quilts. Thank you for sharing.
Joe, you are just an absolute gem of a human being. I love your quilting, I love that you had the opportunity to quilt with the Gees Bend ladies, and show off their amazing quilts. Positively delightful. What a beautiful episode.
Babette Zehren I had the privilege of seeing their museum/store and meeting several of the ladies and watched them quilt. One of my best quilting memories. I love the history behind their quilts using whatever they had to make them. Very similar to our ancestors.
I always hope and pray that today's young people will take an interest in the " old arts" . Appreciate what their relatives accomplished and respect their hard work.
In her first book Selma Lagerlöf has a chapter on what is needed to be happy, a quilting frame and a rose garden. When I first read about that I was like 14-15 yo, and I had no idea what a quilting frame was or looked like. She described this household of women who spent winter around their quilting frame sewing and telling stories, playing games and singing, sometimes with visitors sometimes by themselves. Since then I have wondered what these frames looked like .
I would like to visit Gee's bend. I think this would be such a great experience. I've only been making quilts for a few year's. It's definitely a joyful & satisfying art. I admire these ladies from Gee's bend. It would be an honor to meet them.

The quilts are exquisite, the women are amazing and the stories they tell about their lives belong to the ages. My dream has been to spend a week at the home of one of these venerable ladies and learn from them how to quilt (which I've never done in my life). There should be a formal program for this. Can someone arrange it?
A pesar de que no hablo inglés me siento muy conmovida con estos trabajos , realmente son artistas . Estos trabajos son hechos con pasión. Felicitaciones.
Dear ladys I hope that nobody exploit your unique fantastic quiltart! I am very impressed by your designs that I have never seen before. Let others stich with you can mean to give away your unique handcraft. Maybe?!
I think we all copy as we learn the craft. That's a great way to learn about quilts and quilting. Your own voice emerges as you go along, but anyone who makes a quilt is a real quilter.
They are quilts, but just not to your taste. That's fine, we all have our artistic preferences. I find Joe's quilts get me thinking about how to make mine, even the ones that I don't particularly love have something in them that inspires me!
Wonderful video and Lucy was so gracious!

His wife is a woman.
That one of old suits is hideous!
I love that one!
That man's quits are not really quilts..they're a hodgeboge of material thrown together..not appealing to the eye at all..jmho!
