    As one of the most widely-ridden and long-tenured motorcycles on the road, the original Honda Rebel has made an indelible mark on many riders throughout the decades. From its prevalence in motorcycle training courses, to its dominance as a daily commuter, the Honda Rebel put together a career that has more than secured its place in the petrol pantheon.
    All of that made the task of improving the Honda Rebel a weighty challenge. In this video review of the 2017 Honda Rebel 500 motorcycle, Spurgeon took to the LA streets to compare new with the old, and see where the latest iteration stacks up.

    How did this turn into a pissing contest in the comment section?? I'm a newbie looking for a smallish engine that i wont be an idiot with and honda is a reliable company and the rebel is a decent entry level bike im looking at. Throwing suggestions is great! but it isn't a requirement to be a complete tool in order to suggest something else. A few jokes and ball busting is expected but you guys seem to relate bike engine size with dick size or something its hilarious.

      Timeless Eight my first bike was a Honda shadow 750 and the throttle was fairly stiff so it wasn’t too difficult to keep it under control. Just my two cents if you want an easy enough bike to start but don’t want to get too bored after a while the 500-800 class bikes are a safe bet. At least for cruisers I don’t have any experience on sport bikes or super sports.

      malibu i just recently got a honda rebel 300 and its great. People love the bike and are always admiring and asking questions about it. As long as it has two wheels and an engine, youre a biker in my eyes.

    I sold my Honda 300F, because I am 73 and had a hell of a time getting my leg over the high passenger seat . Now I am looking at the 300 again with the lower seat. Thanks for these videos!

    I'm glad I have my own memories of putting 58k on a cbr250r and doing two 980 mile days and an Iron butt on it. Some of these comments would have you think a small bike explodes over 70mph, gets hurled off the road by just the gravitational influence of a passing truck, and is boring on day two.

    • @10melah5
      @10melah5 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Right? I love my small bikes, they are more fun to me. Having 100hp to the ground bored me to death. My favorite thing is pushing my little 20hp Rebel as far as it'll go! It'll still do an honest 65 which is as fast as I want to go. On the interstate I just slide behind a semi and cruise.

    • @landonfolken03
      @landonfolken03 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly! I've hit 70 on my Grom and it's only 125. A 300 or 500 would have NO problem doing highway speeds.

    • @godwhomismike
      @godwhomismike 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I can ride a Rebel 250 (234cc) at 60-65 mph all day long creeping up to 70+mph. I can't believe the reviews where a reviewer says "yes, this 650-800cc bike can get up to highway speed." Well, no fucking shit. Are they people fucking serious. Thank God for Revilla, who makes the best motorcycle reviews. . I can't stand watching motorcycle reviews done by all the fucking retards that flood TH-cam.

    • @Zaheer0225

      landonfolken03 how did you hit 70 on a grom? Big bore?

    • @landonfolken03
      @landonfolken03 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, just some nice open stretch of highway and likely some wind at our backs. I just got a Z125 last night and was limiting at 67 going down the highway too. Once I swap the sprocket to 15t I'll likely be able to hit 70. It's not that uncommon really.

    I have put a good amount of miles on a Vulcan 500 and I can tell you 40hp is plenty for a beginner bike and you can still have a lot of fun and go on trips and what have you. Dont let all these comments about needing bigger engines fool you.

    People can hate, this bike is going to sell like hot cakes to female riders. I know a girl who does not like harleys and wants a light weight mechine that is fuel efficient without leaking oil. So the rebel 300 is perfect for her and I will recommend it to her asap!

      smaller bikes are heckin awesome!
      You can wring them like there's no tomorrow, you can always ride 'em with the engine on the edge, you can snap back the throttle and let the engine do the accelerating without the danger of landing in the ditch (smacking the throttle open on a 'busa would get you in trouble faster than you could say "stop")

      My wife wants one. I told her to go with the 300 and ABS rather than a 500 w/o it. She really wants a Grom though as I have one and she loves it. She's debating now though because if she gets a Rebel she could take our son to school on it and still ride to work afterwards. The Rebel is definitely a great family of bikes.

    I have a Rebel 500ABS on its way to me, not here yet. This will be my third bike, and I will be quite happy with it. The only cruiser style, small enough, with mid-range controls. In my opinion, it will be perfect for me

    I frickin LOVE this Bike and I'm a returning older rider who grew up on British Bikes and a deep love for Triumph Classics - this will be the Bike that gets me on 2 wheels again. Interesting that Spurge dismissed the Rebel 500 as soulless in one of the Highside/Lowside discussions - I think Revzilla missed a trick by getting this guy to review it - I would have much preferred either Lemmy or Joe since both might have more empathy with this type of ride ...

    Lot of comments here about how beginners would be fine having more than 500cc to start with. Sure. That may be true for some. Others might not be comfortable with that kind of power or the weight that comes with it. Smaller bikes also have a mpg and price advantage. If someone wants to get around town on as little money as possible they'll buy an old 250 and ride for days on $10 in gas.

    • @maxwellgraves1668
      @maxwellgraves1668 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon Findlay Daily Rebel 250 rider here, I pay at most about $45 a month for gas, and that’s me being adventurous.
      It’s about $2.50 per fill up every third day since I do 40 miles round trip for work.
      I bought the bike for $1,000 and just keep on chugging along, insurance was less than $200 for the whole year.

      Victor Jara the Harley’s are pretty cool, but I’m willing to bet off the line acceleration this will take a 883, the Rebel 500 makes more power and weighs less. Won’t beat out a 1200 though lol

This might just be my thing, and it looks like it's ready to bolt on forward controls with no major hassle.

    $6,000?! Might as well get a Yamaha SR400. Better handling because of better weight distribution. The Rebels make me laugh. Premium price for a nothing bike. Praise it all you will to try and boost sales but I'm betting smart shoppers will pass this by just like they did the NT700V, the Interceptor, the VFR1200... Shall I go on? If your dead set on a Honda 500, the Honda 500R, 500X, and the naked 500 all offer a more competent ride for the same money or less, depending on sales in your area. This iteration is a turd.

    So for 500 you're looking at $7,500 $8,000. By the time they tax you and you pay all their little fees. You didn't leave out. Does front suspension how spongy it is and the back. And it's hard to bring your legs in because of the engine pushing out by your ankles. How about the odometer it doesn't have a lot of options there. So a little more promoting Honda. Then looking out for the guy buying it.

    If you were a new rider ask a friend who rides for help. Buy a safe used bike at a decent price. Ride it for a season or two and resell it. The money you save can go for good safety gear and the MSF course. If you make a noob mistake you won't thrash a new bike. EBay or salvage motorcycle shops have spares.

    1 watt of power for a stereo means 1 person at the top of their lungs yelling. Some people are very loud and 1 watt can be a lot. 1 horse power means the power of one live horse. Some people have been known to die on one horse. So, when you say 26 horse power isn't a lot what you are saying is being pulled by 26 living horses isn't a lot. 26 houses is a lot of power if you think of it as 26 living horses. Most people couldn't handle that kind of power. The person who came up with horsepower rating was James Watt to measure units of work.

    • @manny75586
      @manny75586 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Especially considering the weight of a motorcycle this size being very low. Around 600 lbs with a rider on it. One horse can pull a 600 lbs carriage around easily at a decent speed. Add 49 more to that.
      Plenty of power for city and light highway riding.

    Why do you guys compare the 300 to the 500 models? They are two different bikes. Yes, we all know they share the same frame, etc. I just shake my head in disbelief when experienced riders tell beginners to "get the 500. you'll get bored with the 300" crap. That is not only a dangerous suggestion but irresponsible. You're effectively setting up a new rider for failure (serious crash). But what do I know. I've only been riding since I was 8 years old.

    The problem is that they're using motors they have laying around. put their new 650 four banger in it, or an 850, some clip-ons, and for God's sake put the key in the center of the bike. There's a reason no one puts the key in the side anymore... it's called accidents. That thing goes down and it'll snap the key off in the ignition. Personally, it needs higher seat level. better springs in back for a bitch seat. The bike screams loner, not lone wolf. Honda is stuck in their 300, 500, and 700cc hole and can't come up with anything innovative and desirable. At least Suzuki has the balls to put out a street 750... a lost class because of the performance of the 600, granted... but at least it's a different offering. That and their SV650 are staples in their lineup that actually sell. Not mentioning the 1,000cc class because whatever brand you choose you'll be more than happy with the power. The 600-850 class is a different breed.

    Nothing about this bike will totally knock your socks off. It's pretty plain. Gets great MPG. Plenty of power for light highway work and city riding.
    The big added draw has to be how easily Hondas are customized and the good aftermarket selection for them generally.
    I've seen new Rebels bobbed out and they look pretty damn cool.
    I heard it's a bigger pain to put forward controls on the 500 though.

    WAY to expensive!!! 4500 and
    6500 for an entry level bike is ridiculous.
    why would anyone not buy a 3-4 year old bike for 1500 to learn on. knowing that they will sell and upgrade after a year.
    These bike manufacturers are getting STUPID with their prices.

    Power seems disappointing. My 1984 VT500FT has 50 hp and was designed 35 years ago. I would love this bike around 300lbs and 60+ horse power.

    I didn't sit on a Bike for 15 years. Looking into retirement I thought now is the time for a Bike again pulling behind an RV. So I am 5'6 bought me an old 250 just to get back into it. Now getting a little more serious about it and wanted a bike that lasts (may be the last one that I buy).
    I tried on the Harley Davidson Street 500 and the Honda Rebell 500. I drove both on a weekend and about 300 miles each. The price point of the Honda is 1000 Points better than the HD. Driving both the HD 500 and the Honda 500 I have to say that I'll think the Honda feels better in the city for some reason. That could be a personal preference because I thought the seat on the HD could be some inches further back. The HD, in my opinion, has a little more umpf on the high end behind 95. But I'll think (personal opinion) the tiny little more umpf behind 95 is not worth the 1000 points more out of my savings.

    I'll be getting my first bike soon, I am set on a cruiser and honestly I'm digging this bike a lot. However 6k for a bike I won't ride everyday is a bit much. You have to at taxes, dealer fees and if you're financing. It adds up quickly. That's why the 300 looks more appealing monetarily speaking

    I have a different view of Honda using a low tech 500cc engine that is low on horsepower. It takes the online magazines to prop them up for using these Indian built power plants. I have nothing bad to say about India, but about Honda for going cheap and selling it under the Honda name.

  • @m.rraghav817

    In india we only get the cbr 250r...no cbr 300,500 or rebel . Even the 250rr was suppose to come but honda only want to sell scooters here apparently.

    as a new rider im pretty much set on getting the 500, i just wonder why honda put only one rather small disc up front with those larger tires? i would think for new riders they would have put a little more stopping power on it but maybe they were worried about new riders going into panic mode and with a softer braking experience youre less likely to lock up? idk maybe they were trying to save money or make it more affordable by now making ABS standard? thats my only concern about it, everything else seems perfect for me in my current stage
