    Optometrist here--Peep sights have an advantage not present with V notch / Buck-horn sights. If you wear distance ophthalmic lenses ( eyeglasses) there is a significant advantage to peep sights. To learn if this applies to you and you wear distance eyeglasses, do this simple test. 1)Take a scrap piece of cardboard and poke 1 roofing nail hole in cardboard. 3) find a suitable target 9 (deer sized target) 100 yards away. 4) Remove your eyeglasses 5) view distant target with just naked eyes ( no eyeglasses) 6) view distant target through hole in cardboard---If your vision of distant target is better through hole in cardboard, you might just love your first peep sight.

    SKINNERs are cool, put 'em on my '94 a few yrs.ago. "Peeple" have caught-on . . .
    Skinner keeps making more models fitting many more guns than before, great sights.

    I have Skinner Express sights on my JM 444 Marlin and Guide Gun 45-70. I am happy with them, and find them an improvement over the OEM buckhorn sights, which are good. Your thumbscrew is a good idea. No scopes on my Marlins. I left the rear sights on the guns, just folded them down.

    The good news (verify before commit) is that the tapped screw holes on the Henry lever .410 are the same as for the 30-30, 45-70, etc. With a peep sight, my Henry .410. becomes my lever-action musket shooting rifled slugs.

    That's the same reason i got the skinner express it does suit the rifle better than the other options. Great iron sight system for the 336 highly recommend.

    Thanks for your video well done.I have a Marlin 444 for more than 30 years. I have always used the sights that came with the rifle and did well with it. I was trained with peep sights and my old eye's need all the help i can get now. I'm going to order the Skinner sights today because of this video. I'm thinking of getting a lever rifle in a pistol caliber. The 444 is not for plinking 10 rounds and your done because of the recoil. I have a friend who reloads for me or a box of ammo is $33.00. Hopefully I won't have to change the front sight. Thanks again!!!

    what many miss is the back peek sight should go out of focus when concentrating on the front sight and the peep should be as close to your eye as possible to make this happen.

    I have a henry color case hardend octagon barrel 44 mag rifle. I put a skinner color case hardend sight on it. For 30 bucks they engraved my name on the sight. Shoots lights out at 100 yards. Have skinners on a 45 marlin and a henry 22. Love em..

      I have the same rifle, but in 45 Colt. Did you have to change out the factory front site for a taller front site ( from Skinner) for your Henry Big Boy rifle?

      Nope.

  • @blackie1of4
    @blackie1of4 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Question.. how do you know the correct height for the front post!
    Assuming you are starting from scratch! I was thinking about installing express sights from Skinner on one of my firearms and having the barrel drilled and tapped for a front sight.
    Their universal peep for said firearm is .400 measured center of the ghost ring.

  • @izuksammy
    @izuksammy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick question, sir. Did you have to bring up your cheek wield? I like the low nature of the factory sights.

    • @buffalosoutdoors
      @buffalosoutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. The rear sight on this particular model sits on the same plane as the notch of the factory rear sight. This is also what allowed me to use my factory front sight.

    How far are you able to shoot effectively with these sights? I just picked up a 45-70 for hunting reasons. I figure that I need to be within 200 yards in order to shoot, so I am trying to figure out if I need a scope or can get away with this sort of sight.

    • @denisdegamon8224
      @denisdegamon8224 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It can be done with peep sites provided you learn the trajectory of the load your using for bullet drop at extended distances. Your zero range will dictate the hold over you need to apply to be on target at 200 yards.
      IE: 100 yard zero.... hold over at 200 might be plus 16" or more depending on bullet shape and weight.
      Most would agree that short of using a vernier adjustable site ( with pre determined setting) you should limit shooting at game to 150 yards with iron sites.
      Most folks aren't buffalo hunters these days.

  • @albatross497
    @albatross497 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Everybody is different.But i can't stand a peep and most people love them! Different strokes for different folks!.I guess that's my only problem with the AR-15.Those are nice sights if you like a peep!

    • @buffalosoutdoors
      @buffalosoutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I shoot with peep sights on my M1 and on my 10/22 and I wear glasses. Since I'm not trying to focus on the rear sight and a with a peep sight you are basically centering the front sight in the opening of the rear, glasses are not a problem.

    • @tjmooremusic
      @tjmooremusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wear eyeglasses with progressive lenses.
      It dosn't bother me to shoot with them on.
      In fact, I can't see the sight picture without them...I have the Skinner gold express on my Henry Big Boy 357 magnum.
      Luck had it that I did not have to get a taller front sight. I did knock out the buckhorn sights as they were in the way. I put in a plug and wish I had gotten the one that carried a different appiture.
      I have a few sizes of them but generally use the medium size that you referred to...
      My Henry is a better shot than I am....;)
