Turntable Cartridge Alignment with Overhang Gauges and S-Shaped Tonearms

- S-Shaped Tonearms were designed to facilitated the act of aligning your cartridge. In order to utilize this design you will also need an Overhang Gauge, which can easily be found online if you know the make of your tonearm and the recommended overhang. I hope this video helps!

So when I did this and got the right distance with the over hang gauge, squared up the cartridge with a protractor and set the tacking weight with a scale...Man what a difference in sound...It's crystal clear!!
Which protractor did you use?
what do you mean the cartridge is not squared when you use a protractor? is it the correct protractor?. The instructions for setting the alignment and over hang with the tool, are to make sure the cartridge is parallel in the headshell, then set the stylus tip with the marker on the tool, job done, it should then measure 52mm from the stylus tip to the rubber washer at the back of the head shell (where it attaches to the tone arm), use a ruller to confirm. RE: protractors, It does depend what your using, as some will get you a varied result to that of the alignment tool. As an example, for Technics SL1200/ ATLP120 etc, the Stevenson protractor is recommended, which the 52mm over hang tool sets in anycase. It's down really to personal preference, & confidence to the one you decide to use,
Some people say a protractor is better, but what can be better than a tool provided by the turntable manufacturers, specifically for the job of over hang and alignment. I find the tool a much simpler process, than finding and printing a protractor to scale. I know the tool is correct before I use it!,
There are only a few things to take note of:
Tone arm Geometry (does your particular tone arm use 49mm or 52mm over hang)
Make sure the mounted cartridge is parallel(straight)in the headshell
Using the correct over hang tool (49/52mm) set the stylus tip with the marker on the tool, tighten head shell screws - that should be it,
this was the information passed to me from Technics & AT regarding their SL1200 series & ATLP120 turntables, you can find the same information online,
If your going to use a protractor to test alignment, I'd say use one designed for your turntable, or use you ears to listen for any distortion or imperfections in playback sound,

Even on S-shaped arms, you will need a little bit of turn in the cartridge sometimes.
Word to the wise, sometimes the gauge is made wrong. I have 2 that came from 2 different 1200s I bought and they don't agree with each other. I eventually had to use a protractor and then see which one matched. The bad one was kinda angled to the side for some odd reason.
Great video- I have a Technics Overhang Gauge that works great with my Technics TT. Recently I treated myself to a JVC QL-7. The JVC overhang is only 48 mm, so I used a caliper to determine where 48 was and marked it with a piece of masking tape. Now my JVC sounds great, too! The only thing that seems like a "problem" is that I have to always move the cartridges as far back as they will go on non-JVC headshells.

Et il faut (pour cette méthode d'alignement) que la cellule soit bien alignée dans l'axe du porte cellule.

Where did you find the pioneer 49mm guage? I can only seem to find the technics 52mm.

Are most brands like pioneer, technics and even fluance and others using the same guage?
I just use a protractor, but using the overhang guage first then getting it exact with protractor would be alot faster.

Would you be able to use the technics one? That depends on a great deal of things.
The technics overhang Gauge will make it so there is exactly 52 mm from the stylus tip to the headshell gasket.
This gives a technics table / tonearm a correct overhang (which shouldn't be confused with having a correct alignment)
The technics tonearm geometry with it's 22 degrees off-set angle, 230 mm effective length, 215 mm pivot to spindle distance gives you the 15 mm overhang (the distance the stylus will overshoot the spindle)
To obtain this correct 15 mm overhang, you simply use the technics overhang Gauge, which (roughly) ensures you reach the proper overhang, in relation to tonearm geometry, and the tonearms distance and relation to the platter (on the technics table)
If you were to use a 52mm overhang Gauge with some random table, you would most likely get poor results, unless it was some Technics clone.

That's not true at all, my other TEAC TN-4D turntable has completely different geometry.

The arm traces a completely different arc, located a different place on the platter, in this case the the Technics overhang Gauge makes no sense, it will only produce completely random results.
If your flurance table has these data - yes you can use the Technics overhang gauge, and that would not get you Stevenson or even Technics propetary alignment.
230 mm effective lenght
215 mm Pivot to spindle
15 mm overhang
Offset angle 22 degrees
All it would ensure is you have correct overhang, but you would still be un-aligned with the null points for sure though 😝
Ofcourse if you wanted Stevenson, Baerwald, or Loefgren you needed different amount of overhang and offset angle, resulting in the fact that the pick-up would have to be mounted slightly asymmetrically in the headshell.

I do not see this on Amazon/Ebay/ nor LP Gear. I have a Vintage Technics SL D202 bought online many years ago, and I just pulled it out of storage, no gauge came with this unit. And an Audio-Technica LP 120USB that hasn't been taken out of the shrink wrap/box and still have the invoice from Feb. 2014!! Think they included one in my unit like they were suppose to??;-) yea , right.

Would this apply to the audio technica lp120 as I looked on their website and it says to set the overhang to 53mm and then align the cantilever to their Stevenson protractor. I got the 53mm down and had to twist the cart partly inwards towards the spindle to meet the null points, is this correct?
Always go off of the Protractor. When I use my overhang gauge the cartridge is aligned on the Protractor, but if yours is not then you did the right thing.

You might want to forget the protractor. Once you have the 53mm stylus to headshell tail distance, just get the cartridge body parallel to the headshell. On my A-T LP-120 USB that alignment produces the best sound.

@@charlesludwig9173 That assumes that both your arm is perfect (and most 40+ year old decks have aren't) and the cantilever is dead straight.
Does overhang only apply to s shaped arms?
When I place the needle on the record in the first few minutes the speakers resonate and as it progresses that resonance in the speakers disappears, does anyone know why that is? Cheers
I’ve read that capacitors take a while to “warm up” or reach a equilibrium. My ancient setup doesn’t sound quite right until I’ve played a couple of sides 30-40 minutes.
You need a subsonic filter
You have an arm resonance highly likely.
Using the hifi new test record, test the resonance of your arm.
Then change the headshell weight as needed - up or down. If the resonant freq. is NOT between 8-12, but above 12, add mass, like 2 grams and then readjust the stylus force. If far below 8, reduce mass with new low mass head shell and again adjust stylus force accordingly.
By the way is your anti skating set correctly?

again, on S shaped tonearms, the rest of the alignment is already taken care of after centering the cart in the headshell and setting proper overhang. VTA is set separately obviously.
@@andmoreagain рекомендую выставить VTA, и дальше проводить настройки по шаблону. После полной настройки можно будет проверить VTA, но оно не изменится
Not for the first time, when playing some film, the sound is on mute, when taking it off, sound volume goe's to zero, why??

I do have a question, What do you think of Wooden head shells? I recently bought a wooden head shell, l lined it all up with my protractor everything looked good but the cart looked off center when I put it on over hang gage & looked directly at it? I then took my calipers measures the 2 slots from side to side & noticed there was a 0.0020 thousands difference from each side. The records sound great when I play them, & it all lined up good with my protractor. But is it ok that the cartridge is off Center? is my question Any help would be great Thanks..
