I was acquainted with Hugh in the last couple years of his life. I occasionally bowled at the same time as him at the lanes, and we would sometimes chat. One day I mentioned that I watched this particular match up, and without missing a beat he said that "Tom Olszta was the best bowler ever."
Your post inferred that Hugh had passed on. I then googled Hugh and found out he had passed in July of 2018, his obituary at least gave me some insight to his wonderful life and accomplishments other than his tremendous bowling skills and the children he left to carry on his memory. It's just the way life is at our age now, persons that you knew perhaps only through their bowling skills some 35 to 40 years back are now either entering or well into their golden years.
I just LOVE the audience in this match. They really elevated the excitement level of this awesome match. Thank you for posting this vid and for all of the other Candlepin Vids you have helped preserve and make available for all to view. I personally have been bowling for well over 50yrs and man I just love watching all of these re-runs of some of the best matches ever filmed. Thank you again :))
this is what hughs run of matches consisted of 8-28-82 hugh ferguson over joe deliso 9-4-82 hugh ferguson over dave dupuis 9-18-82 hugh ferguson over john miller 9-25-82 hugh ferguson over bert nichols 10-2-82 hugh ferguson over don Richmond 10-9-82 hugh ferguson over gary Carrington 10-16-82 hugh ferguson over fran onorato 10-23-82 hugh ferguson over lee Bergeron
Most bowling alleys use silicone and/or synthetic pindecks which cause the pins to fly around like crazy....so you can basically hit anywhere and get a 7 pin drop or more, unless you are full on the headpin....so in some ways it's better to not be accurate.
Wolfman, do you have Olstza vs Bob Reynolds? I recall a great match there where Reynolds (no relation) performed strong and came close but just a little short of the King.
Hey Bob! I probably should have left out the spoiler as far as who won in case the video does surface. Two 400 games, I didn't recall the exact score (my memory is not that great haha) but I do remember that and that it was just an exciting match and could have gone either way. Best to you!!
They use acrylic, not wood pins, nowadays. They sound "clacky", not like wood, which has almost a musical timbre. And the acrylic pins are livelier, so it is easier to get a higher score. Economics, unfortunately.
weldon mackenzie imagine her yelling at her husband! Harvey, clean the gutters! Harvey, you can’t go golfing with the boys! Harvey! Mow the lawn, trim the hedges and paint the garage! Harvey, mother is moving in with us! Lol!

Hi Paul. I wish there was a tape of that match as I am Bob Reynolds and even I do not have it. It was 419-408 back in 1985. Thanks for remembering!!!
