This is so cool. I love checking out different faceting machines. My mentor has several different kinds that he will rebuild as well as one he created. Thank you for sharing the Aussie Gemmasta. It looks like a solid machine and one you could enjoy cutting on.
Yep! Love this episode! More Please! I am very much an amateur faceter. I started on a home made jam peg machine, graduated to a Sapphire faceting machine. Now using a Facetron. All 3 were great machines! I think I learned more lessons from the jam peg machine and that really helped to make better gems with the other two.
Love your video. I have a GF4 and it is a beautiful machine. I bought it 12 years ago and it was already 5 years old. I did have to have the mast repaired as it had been knocked very hard on something before I bought it and it was out of alignment. Since that, though I have had no problems with its performance. I facet two times a week at my local club all up 8 hours a week I am using the machine. I would love to see how you clean and maintain the Gemmasta.
Hi Cliff thanks for sharing. I have recently started faceting and was given a machine just like this Gemasta. mine never came with dops so I had some made that are perfectly round and rotate freely. I would love to get a 45 degree attachment for table cutting which I also do not have. I have just had a new motor fitted with a variable speed drive. Thanks for the videos. Here in South Africa equipment is very difficult to come by and to find stones to cut is equally difficult. Keep up the good work.
This is great!! I have started collecting equipment & only now need a faceting lap, Have yet to save for one so look forward to seeing this potential series!! ^-^ Love your videos, very instructional, beautiful stones!
Hi Cliff. I have a UltraTec V2 that I have been using for more than 20 years now. If I was to buy a new machine I would go for the Australian VJ machine. One of its biggest advantage is it's ability to cut the table without removing the dop from the quill. Having said that I am more than happy with the UltraTec and I think it will probably out last me.
I’ve purchased an old gfe 2, I would be most appreciative for information on swapping out the index wheel if your able please. The quill looks similar to the gfe 3 ?
Hi Cliff, I am looking at purchasing my first machine which is older gemaster. Has the same head as yours but the base is more open.hopefull the minister of war and finance approves the capital expenditure.
Hi Cliff I’m cutting on a GF5 And the quail and Dop stick set up is the same as this machine. The pin does not lock the dop in place it’s just a guide. The nut on the end locks it in place. No you cannot rotate the dop in the transfer gig Because there is one Guide on each end of the transfer gig that lines up with the Groove in the Dop.
@@terrenceclark3309 Hi Terence, Tim doesn't have my number. I'd prefer to remain private. But you can email me. Look in the ABOUT TAB on some of the other videos. Cheers.
Hello, I am looking for lapidary machine for dimonds faceting. Can you please suggest which machine is best machine for dimond. Please do let me known. Regarding, Thank you.
Great video!,keep em coming.love the mechanics of different faceting machines.Ive been wanting to give my machine (Gemmasta GF4) a good cleaning, any suggestions as to what to use?
i cut my first gem on a gemmasta at the lapidary club (round brilliant). the locator pin had been removed which meant the transfer was done differently, what about the digital machines in stock at gemcuts, they promise very accurate cutting and what about a facetron with the depth gauge?. im in the market too and there are things i like about different machines, the digital machine i worry about calibration. a gemmasta with a depth gauge would be good so you don't have to check all the time.
Shane a depth dial/gague is easily fixed to the gemmastas. Ive owned two Facetrons and cant recommend them. They are constructed almost entirely from aluminium and not turned brass and steel like the aussie machines. They are easy to bump out of alignment and arent built as well and as robust as our machines. id advise you to steer clean of them imho. Gemmasta gf3/4/5, Hall 2000 or Hall heavy duty deluxe (not the Hall extra steer clear) The Vj is very accurate machine but very expensive and among the best. An american machine that is worth its salt is the Facette Gemmaster II , similar to the vj in design
Keep em comming mate love the videos. On a separate note I have in my possession a mostly original hall mark 2. When I say mostly original I believe the motor has been either replaced or restored and the belt has been replaced ( do you have any idea how hard it is to find a k belt at the correct size lol ). Mine doesn't have the vineer either and because I learnt on a close to the top of the line VJ with digital read outs ( through my gem club ) I struggle with precision. I hate guessing but have to. Are you going to look into the halls and the VJ brands In this series? Thanks again mate
I personally am not a fan of the gemmaster but seeing as your promoting them you could have mentioned they have a removeable quill, this is the one feature I do like on my gemmaster GF4
I'd prefer a Aussie machine. It would be easier to service, and cheaper to buy. The Aussie dollar is too low against the green back to be buying US goods.
ola boa tarde lindo trabalho, eu estou querendo mudar meus index mas estou com dificuldades por exemplo qual o diâmetro do index deste modelo seu poderia me ajudar?
If you can get your hands on an Ultra Tech Faceting Machine (Especially a V2) that would be another great video for your friends across the pond in the USA.
You just need to fit an optical encoder ;) A lever in nicer instead of the protractor locking knob. Look like the machine has some mods, groves on the platen and an extra bit on the main angle pivot, where the large brass nut is.
you should probably mention that we run on 240 volts and 50hz here, where as the USA run on 110 volt with 60hz. This will alter speeds of the motors with the different frequencies even with transformers to alter the voltage.
is it worth buying some cheap facetting machines on alibaba express? ( those that cost below $700 ) the taxes and shipping fee for buying high cost (those over 2000 USD) facetting machines is almost half the price here in Korea
Thanks for the video Cliff. I find faceting equipment and techniques equally interesting, especially when explained by you.
Thanks Spidersinspace.

Thanks Tam. Its very solid and weighs a tonne.
this machine weighs 50-60lbs haha tank!
Love this sturdy as a Land Rover machine, what could go wrong

Oh I also had to make my own 96 index wheel because mine only came with a 64 index
@@samdavies1335 You can buy the dops at Gemcuts. They may also have 45 degree adapters also.

Thanks Terrence for that information. How are you finding the GF5 for accuracy?
I’ve only been cutting for about 6 months cliff so I’am no Expert. I’am Getting better and better with each stone. I found the machine very accurate

Here in the US, the best one you can get is the "Facetron" faceting machine which goes for about $ 2,900 USD brand new.
Jason Summit I like ultra tech myself
I'd prefer a Aussie machine. It would be easier to service, and cheaper to buy. The Aussie dollar is too low against the green back to be buying US goods.
@@VintageTimeGems same with Canada. It actually makes more sense for me fiscally to buy and ship from overseas than American made

I think there will be little chance of getting hold of a UT V2. Cheers

Lol Cliff, driving on the other side of the road takes hardly any effort. I've lived and driven in the UK, Australia and the USA :)
Is the user manual still available?
I don't have a user manual. But there must be user manuals out there.

I've heard bad reports about inaccuracy in these cheap machines. I personally wouldn't buy one.
Somehow I have a feeling you really, really like this machine.
Oh yes. Shame it's old. It needs work on it.
how much this facerting head
I need gem stone cutting jod in Australia I have lot of experience in this field
Hey good vid Vintage Time, do you know where we can buy these in aus for a decent price?
I don't think there are many for sale. Most that are old usually need a fair bit of work on them.
Ok
