I learned a lot of "Spanish" on the streets from Mexicans. I took Spanish classes in school, but it's proper Spanish. People from Mexico/central America speak their own slang. Some thought I was trying to be above them when I spoke the Spain type spanish.

I feel you man. I was born in VN but lived most of my life in the west. Every time I go back the locals have a hard time understanding my Vietnamese and I have a hard time understanding their English. It helps to have a friend to interpret.
Part of life over here, but we still get by!

I'm learning Vietnamese and my tutor recommended your TH-cam channel to me. This video got a good hearty chuckle out of me. I love your sense of humour.
And yes, the tone is the hardest part, today I learned in our lesson what the difference between "deo" and "đéo" is, because guess which one I used by mistake?
And I agree, getting a tutor is a really good idea, I was using language apps before and found there's a lot they don't actually teach you and of course I pick up lessons on culture and how people tend to use certain words and phrases I wouldn't get out of other methods of learning...and of course the immediate feedback and corrections is super useful because with tone and pronunciation I think there's sounds in English we make and how we use tone is not noticeable to us. I'm probably a breathy speaker, so I have to control that if I want to say "Tôi" instead of "Thôi" and I would never get that kind of feedback without a tutor.
Yes, a Tutor is definitely the way to go! I appreciate the fact that some tutors are recommending my channel. I know my voice isn’t perfect, but I’m glad others can use my channel to learn a little bit. It’s all about consistency, I saw the most growth in my language skills when I stayed consistent with my tutor, and obviously motivation plays a big factor. I have more videos out in the future teaching common slang and phrases, so make sure to stay tuned!
@@phucmapvlog Yeah, I was looking for stuff to watch that helps me get better at listening to Southern Vietnamese because I have very little exposure to it. And how you've structured your videos I think makes it easier to follow for somebody who is learning Vietnamese and I have picked up a couple of words already.
And I'll keep an eye out for those videos, I love slang.
You're spot on about tutors and motivation, not only are they effective (especially if you have a native speaker) but you end up looking forward to the sessions and not wanting to miss out...or let your tutor down.

You are hilarious 😜😝. I was laughing my head off when you said good bye to your mother in law. Also, the way you were speaking Vietnamese was actually saying what it was like “watermelon” rather than the actual name of the fruit, funny. It is a hard language to learn & you are pretty good at it.
Troi oi! Cracked up when you asked him if he had a speech impediment!!! Yes, as you can see, I DO have a Vietnamese name, "Le Tinh," it was given to me. It is all one name, not a first and middle. I chose my own middle and last names. This was a great video, Hurley/Phuc Map!

I'm learning now, It's so hard, but will for sure get a tutor. My wife is Vietnamese and it's not the same as her telling me, I need structure and someone who knows how to teach to get the fundamentals. It's funny how you can say something slightly different and it can mean something so wrong, I have done that many times now. Looking forward to going to Saigon for a few months in July. Thanks for the hilarious content and motivation!

Butter that flys 🤣. My Spanish comes off like this sometimes too. Like I say gato pescado. Cat Fish lol! The real word for it is "bagre". My mexican neighbors are constantly correcting my Spanish, but also laugh hysterically sometimes 🤣

OMG i laughed until i choked. I'm surprised that this video didn't get a few million views already. The guy played the tutor: he was good. To this date i never say the word crab out loud, am afraid the ending sound didn't come out right😊. If i want crab cake for appertizer i just... point😊😊 ... ... I am learning Vietnamese for a year right now, and I found myself laughing the whole video - lots of difficult situations waiting to happen, I presume... I especially liked all the flashcards (my appartment is full of them ^^). But I now know, that I need to improve my sprinting skills next to the Vietnamese ones... just in case.
Be ready to make mistakes, but don’t be shy with it either. I’ve said the wrong thing to plenty of people, just recognize it and move on
You study well and usefully. I find you learning Vietnamese very interesting and useful

BTW, I know Westerners can be offended by nicknames given to them, but oft times the names are more endearing than anything else. I remember growing up with beautiful twin girls where one was nicknamed fat (because she was chunkier as a baby) and one was named skinny. That's what we called them growing up and no one ever took it as anything but cute nicknames. Americans are WAY more self-conscious and easily hurt/offended about things like that whereas Vietnamese folks are more light hearted about it (those whom name you that way and those whom are named that way. :)
I love that about the Vietnamese, and I believe Americans could learn a lot from that aspect of the culture
