    This might be my favourite Gilbert & Sullivan song.

      This is my favourite as well, but not this rendition. I've heard better, singing as well as the orchestra. But that's just my opinion.

      Kreszentia Bichlmaier I wasn't fond of this production, either. Or maybe it's the way it was filmed...

      Kreszentia Bichlmaier Oh, agreed. I have heard better. But I must say I do find the background details in this one amusing, even if I can't quite figure out how they would have transitioned here from the paintings scene.

    Sir Graves Ghastly played this song on his Detroit show every Halloween night with a cool spooky video behind it and him flying through the sky.
    I LOVED IT!!!!!
    Can anyone tell me which series this was from and when it aired X!? I need to know the years that it aired on TV. I’m 65 so I would’ve seen it if it was in the 60s 70s 80s 90s.
    Anyone who helps me find out this information I will be greatly appreciative and I really hope someone can and thank you !!

      It's a song from a production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Ruddigore. It aired on PBS in 1982.
      This song is When the Night Wind Howls. I first heard it on Sir Graves' show and always loved it, took a while to find it. This obviously isn't the version Sir Graves played on his show, but Spotify has a recording of Ruddigore, and When the Night Wind...on that sounds like it might be the one Sir Graves played

    I had always assumed that "wind" in "nightwind" would be pronounced with a short "i". Here, it is pronounced with a long " i". Wind, when pronounced with a long "i", makes me think of a verb "twist" ... and not the noun "breeze". What do readers consider correct or preferred... the short "i" or the long "i"?

  • @karldelavigne8134
    @karldelavigne8134 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why did Donald Adams always sing "wined" rather than wind? Very irritating.

    • @DerekRoss1958
      @DerekRoss1958 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's the original pronunciation. Everybody used to pronounce it like that. In fact we still pronounce "find", "hind" and "rind" that way.

      @@DerekRoss1958 Nonsense.

    • @karldelavigne8134
      @karldelavigne8134 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DerekRoss1958 Yes, and how do you differentiate between wind (breeze) and wind (clock)? Your point is irrelevant. Darrell Fancourt, principal D'Oyly Carte bass before Donald Adams, didn't mispronounce the word. Nor is there any evidence that the word was ever pronounced that way with that meaning.

    • @DerekRoss1958
      @DerekRoss1958 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      On the contrary, the change in pronunciation started in the 17th century. It was complete in most dialects outside Ireland by the 19th. But poets love archaisms and Gilbert was no exception.

    • @karldelavigne8134
      @karldelavigne8134 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DerekRoss1958 Can you cite any evidence for the change in pronunciation and for Gilbert's intentions, since I have recordings going back to the early 1900s that do not corroborate your argument? And how, according to your theory, are there two distinct modern pronunciations of wind with different meanings?
