I like this work a lot, despite (or because of?) the occasional Beetlejuice/Munsters thematic elements in the final movement. However, I'm not sure how effective it is as a *concerto* per se. The blended timbre of a saxophone quartet can be pretty similar to that of a concert band, especially if the band uses a lot of woodwinds (as Maslanka's orchestration does). In this work, it often can be hard to hear where the band stops and the solo ensemble begins. Much of the time, the result just sounds like a concert band that happens to have extra saxophone parts (which I can get behind).
Beautiful sounds...❤️ I was surprised to see you on tenor. As a university saxophone student, I'm curious as how the parts were assigned? Is this the usual setup? Do you guys usually play together?
Beautiful
