I know there's a lot to learn here, so here's some help:
Note that Shadowheart has TWO healing spells.
Cure Wounds heals more but requires an ACTION and you have to be close enough to touch the person you heal.
Healing Word heals less but requires a BONUS ACTION and can be used at range.
I mention this because you always use Healing Word when you should use Cure Wounds - I don't think you noticed that you have both.
For example, at 3:07:30 Shadowheart heals herself but she doesn't need a ranged heal. Worse, you then ended her turn when she still had her normal action and could have used her mace or her Flame Bolt on the enemy.
You can actually cast 1 of each of these spells in the same round if you're desperate, but she only gets a total of 3 spells at her current level before she needs a long rest to recover them so choose wisely.

Joined late but just had a flick through the stream, there is so much to learn in this game for those of us who have never played dnd or Baldur's Gate before but believe me it'll become second nature soon. I'm coming up to 200 total hours played across a few different saves(I haven't been getting much sleep...), almost 100 hours on my main playthrough but haven't yet got through the whole story since there's so much to explore... and I also don't really want it to end. I highly suggest talking often (after major things happening, like people joining etc.) to the companions in your camp as they all have their opinions and stories that unfold over the course of the game. And long rest as much as you want, a lot of stuff happens during long rests and camp supplies aren't that hard to find, at least I haven't even come close to running out at all. Don't worry about failing rolls and that, there's not really a right or wrong way of playing this game, the choices and outcomes of rolls give this game a ton of replayability so if something doesn't go right once, the next time you play could have a completely different outcome. I have been doing a pretty evil playthrough on my main(who coincidentally is also a drow, and has the same tattoo as your character!), causing me to lose a lot of potential companions and major story but it has made the experience completely different than on another save where I play a good-aligned character. Just have fun and go wild, looking forward to seeing more! Wishing you good luck for your rolls when you need them.

At 1:27:05 you hit a monster and then ended your turn.
Look again. The last icon on the top row, a blue background with a red dagger symbol, is a second attack.
You might want to use that.
    Like, all the time.
2 attacks are better than one.
Maybe you find this out later, but I'm seeing it here so I'm mentioning it case you didn't.
Also, while I'm at it, if you move Shadowheart or any other companion next to any enemy before your rogue attacks that enemy, you gain "Advantage" because the enemy is threatened by your ally and by you.
This lets you use your sneak attack.
    It's very powerful.
So powerful that you should try to use it every time you attack.
    Plan for it.
Side note: If any of your companions are next to each other in the initiative order at the top of the screen (no enemies between them), you can move them in any order you want. This is useful if, say, you win initiative and Shadowheart is next after you, you can move her first, put her next to the enemy, then you move up and use your sneak attack.

A super important tip for this game:
At 2:23:44 You moved your character and he suddenly rolled a die. There is a symbol over his head and the sound of dice being rolled. Then a message over your head saying "Survival failed."
Survival is a skill, much like Perception or Stealth.
In this case your character attempted to roll a skill and failed.
    STOP.
    Look around.
    That means something.
You ignored that and moved away and then your whole team passed that same spot and they ALL rolled. You can see it and hear it.
Well, not Astarion; he didn't get close enough to the spot.
At 2:23:50 you can see "Survival Successful" over Gale and Shadowheart.
Shadowheart said "There's something over there."
Again, you ignored all of that and kept going.
This will happen a million times in this game.
The same thing happened again at 3:51:24 and you ignored it again.
However, since all 4 of you failed that check, there isn't much you can do (a long rest and come back and they can try again, but that's not worth 40 camping supplies unless you were going to take one anyway for HP and spells, or once you have more people, you can camp, switch to some people who didn't fail, leave camp, and let them try).
    Listen. Watch.
    Don't ignore it.
I know that's hard when you're always trying to read chat, too.
In both cases it was a mound of loose dirt; dig it up and you get a treasure chest with loot inside.
In some cases I've found secret doors that open up to an entire treasure room.
You don't HAVE to get these things, but more loot makes it more likely that you'll survive.
Lucky for you, your chat led you to the first one you missed and you dug it up at 3:56:20 (it wasn't glowing any more but if you go back to 2:23:50 you can see the glow in that spot from some camera angles).

    • @AgunziLFC
      @AgunziLFC ปีที่แล้ว +3

If you fail those checks, and if you have a shovel, you can just did around that area and you will find the chest without having to succeed a check.

A small summary of the battle you began at 2:05:16.
Hopefully these pointers will help you get used to the massive amount of combat knowledge and tactics this game requires.
    1. You had 2 new characters that were not leveled up to level 2: Astarion and Gale. Always level up. Later somebody in chat mentioned it and you said "i didn't expect a fight." Always expect a fight, always be at max level, always be max prepared.
    2. Shadowheart only had 1 spell left and you used the small heal instead of the big heal. I know you're just starting this and there is a LOOOTTTT to learn, but you gotta learn the spells.
    3. FOCUS FIRE!!!!! Don't spread your attacks out on different enemies. That enemy with 1 HP left can still hit you and maybe kill you. Fine one enemy, take him down, then move onto the next, take him down, etc. Your whole team working on one enemy at a time.
    4. You have a "Help" action mixed in with all your other actions. Use that to stand up your fallen friends.
    5. Don't waste your time running ONE person behind a statue - the enemies will just kill somebody else that didn't hide. Also, you didn't kill anybody that turn because you were hiding behind the statue. Seriously, the best way to stay alive is to eliminate the first enemy as quickly as possible using your whole team, not just some of them.
    6. Rogues. You have TWO of them, you and Astarion. They have Sneak Attack but you need advantage. The easiest way to get advantage is to move somebody ELSE next to your target. For example, let Shadowheart use her Flame Bolt on somebody then move her next to them. Now you and Astarion can run up and use Sneak Attack on them. Extra damage. Focus the whole team on that one guy until he's dead, then move onto the next guy.
    7. As you saw, don't step away from an enemy with a melee weapon. It gives them a free shot against you.
Coming into this fight rested, with all your heroes at level 2, and all your spells refreshed so they can each cast 3 spells in the fight, and focusing fire, and not giving them a ton of free shots.
That might tip the balance in your favor.
Also, some sneaky tactics might work. I personally snuck around back to that guy up the stairs and tried to gank him first. It didn't quite work, but at least when the fight started, we were all up there and wrecked that guy and then it was 4 against 3.
Your second try went much better.
Way too much splitting up and running around, still not quite enough focusing on one enemy at a time, and you wasted every spell before the fight, but it went quite well anyway.
You called it cheating to shoot the hanging rock.
    Not at all.
This game has environmental things all over the place. Flaming chandeliers, exploding barrels, oily floors, and many many many more things.
Learn to spot them and use them or the AI will use them against you.

Don't rush. You can hit/fire then move, or move fire/hit move etc. As you know you get 1 action 1 bonus action - each skill / consumable/spell/action etc can be different for characters - so before ending your turn check to see if anything is useful....moving a bit more, casting a bonus action spell etc. Use your bonus actions like Jump it can close the gap on enemies, before you move / hit them

      Some more general tips:
      (1) Pressing Left Alt reveals some loot in the area, but not all. Some loot still has to be found and picked up on your own. Some need high perception to appear.
      (2) Containers can be carried and dropped on vents and traps on the floor so you won't step on them accidentally.
      (3) Selling junk is a way to earn gold. I would only sell junk worth 5 gold or more, since most junk is worth only 1 gold. Sell with your high-charisma character to increase selling prices.
      (4) Stealing and pickpocketing (with your high DEX character) is a necessity because many items are expensive to buy.
      (5) Right-click on enemies to see their resistances (fire, poison, piercing, etc.). Attack their weaknesses and avoid their strengths.
      (6) Have your characters carry assorted weapons that can deal piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damages, because some enemies may be weak to specific ones.
      (7) Whenever you can, sneak (press C) before going into combat to gain "advantage" on enemies, at least on first strike.
      (8) An "advantage" gives you a massive boost in your winning chance because you roll 2 dice and use the higher value. E.g. When you attack someone with 13 armor, you get 40% chance with no advantage, but 64% chance with advantage.
      (9) Conversely, a "disadvantage" gives you a massive drop in your chance, because you roll two dice and take the lower value. Most terrains (water, mud, oil, etc.) give "disadvantages" in combat. Try to stay away from them and/or lead enemies to them.
      (10) All your abilities (STR, DEX, CON, etc.) give an extra +1 bonus to your dice roll when they reach even numbers. 17 DEX gives +3, but 18 DEX gives +4. Therefore, avoid odd numbers, and always try to get to the next even number asap to obtain the next +1 bonus. Each +1 bonus adds about 5% chance to your dice rolls, so it is not trivial.
      (11) In your camp, store your excess items only in the "Traveler's Chest", because that is the only container that travels with you to different camps (yes, your camp environment changes depending on where you set up camp).

Be careful with long rests, if you have something time sensitive to do, remember that sleeping for 8 hours will pass the time. It doesn't affect main story missions and as far as side stuff, it's up the air what is affected or not. Rule of thumb, if something seems urgent, don't waste too much time. Other than that, try to learn as you go. Failure isn't really failure, just part of the story. Save often though, you're always close to something nasty

1:09:40 "How is the other lady's attack so damn slow?"
In D&D, at the start of combat, everybody rolls a d20 (twenty sided die) and adds their dexterity modifier.
    Yours is +3.
If I recall, hers is +1.
But those tiny modifiers don't matter too much because you can roll anywhere from 1 to 20, which means your initiative could be anything between 4-23 and hers between 2-21.
Sometimes she will go before you.
    Sometimes after.
That's the joy of using a d20 for nearly every roll in D&D.
By the way, the monsters roll the same d20 and add their dexterity modifier too, so sometimes they go before you, sometimes not.
Your not-dark dark-elf has a fairly good modifier, so you'll go first a little more often than anybody else, which is exactly what happened in this fight.

im sure someone has said it already but read your spells and abilities and make sure to use your actions and bonus actions, you were using your action to dash instead of your bonus action as a rogue which is a huge waste, also you can use your sneak attack if an enemy is threatened (next to) an ally which will majorly increase your rogues damage

  • @blakewalker84120
    @blakewalker84120 ปีที่แล้ว

3:38:20 "So using potions and stuff doesn't count against your action points?"
    You don't have action points.
You have ONE action and ONE bonus action.
    That's it.
(some class abilities can increase these numbers but I don't think you have any yet).
Moving is not an action, so you can do that too.
    Move.
    Action.
    Bonus Action.
Attacking, spellcasting, and almost all class abilities use your ACTION.
Some spells and abilities use the BONUS ACTION instead.
Examine them to see what kind of action it uses.
Drinking a potion uses your bonus action.
So does your rogue's bonus attack (blue dagger icon) and Shadowheart's Healing Word.
So if you drink a potion with your ONE bonus action, you can't do those other things that require bonus actions, but you still have your ACTION.

  • @blakewalker84120
    @blakewalker84120 ปีที่แล้ว

3:03:40 "So why can't I use a magic ability right now guys? Do I not have enough action?"
    Exactly right.
He used his action casting the Fog Cloud.
    Here's why:
At 3:01:10 Gale is not in the fight. He has not rolled initiative and he is not in the turn order at the top of the screen.
You clicked on him and made him create his Fog Cloud.
That made him join the fight and he rolled initiative right at that moment.
Now he joins the fight but his action is used up already.
Yes, I know, you didn't "use an action" because you were not in the turn order.
But you actually did use an action to cast Fog Cloud and if the game didn't count that, he could roll a good initiative roll and be the next one in the turn order and cast a second spell.
That would be basically like getting two turns in a row, one before you join the battle, one after.
The game won't let you do that so you join with your action already "pre-used".
And no, clicking end turn doesn't "build up more points for next turn".
Each turn you get exactly the same amount of actions and movement as every other turn you ever take. No building up, no saving.
    Side note:
At the end of this fight, the last guy didn't run into your group to be slaughtered, so you used Dash to get to him.
You had the right idea but you should have moved Astarion, Shadowheart, and your rogue right next to him.
If he runs, you ALL get free shots.
If not, you're all in place to use ADVANTAGE next turn which lets both rogues use their deadly sneak attacks.

3:34:30 "So they're resistant to bludgeoning and poison."
    No.
Those enemies are VULNERABLE to bludgeoning and IMMUNE to poison.
Look again when you hover over the Bludgeoning icon - it says "Bludgeoning damage against this enemy is doubled."
I know, I know, the title of that little popup says "Bludgeoning Resistance."
    I think that's a bug.
    But the text is correct.
Also look at the Poison Resistance - it says "Poison damage against this enemy is nullified."
    Complete immunity.
    Here's the visual cue:
If the icon has a bright shield outline, it's an immunity.
If the icon has a tiny blue arrow pointing up, it's a resistance which means they take half damage.
If the icon has a tiny red arrow pointing down, it's a vulnerability and they take double damage.

From the old Dark Queen of Krynn days until now, CRPGs have always been something I look forward to playing. As I said though, it's really not for everybody, just like not everyone enjoys playing platformers or RTS or ARPGs or stealth games or visual novels or adventure games, etc. This is just not your jam and it's fine, gaming like music is subjective, it differs from person to person, it's okay to like/dislike something. 3:44:36 "I'm glad he's attacking my high-dexterity guy because the chances of them dodging is really high."
    Nope.
There is no dodging in this game.
You have an Armor Class (AC).
If you're naked and have no dexterity bonus, it's a 10. That's the base number.
If you put on armor, that number gets higher.
If you have a good dexterity, that number gets higher, or a bad dexterity can make it lower.
Other things can help too, like shields, some spells, and other stuff you will find.
You can look at each character to see their AC.
I think Shadowheart has the highest AC in your group, even though your character has much higher dexterity.
When anything attacks you, that enemy rolls 1d20 and adds some stuff: proficiency, magical bonuses, strength or dexterity modifier (depending on what weapon they use), and maybe a few other things.
Roll the die, add the bonuses.
if the number matches your AC or higher, you get hit.
If it's lower than your AC, the attack misses you.
Since your dexterity modifier is already part of your AC, there is no extra "dodge" mechanic.
    Now for the math:
    Shadowheart has 17 AC.
You and Astarion have 14 AC.
    Gale has 13.
Let's say a monster might be +5 on it's attack rolls, the same as you.
If it attacks Shadowheart, it hits her if it rolls a 12 or higher (45% chance).
If it attacks you or Astarion, it hits on a 9 or higher (60% chance).
If it attacks Gale, it hits on an 8 or higher (65% chance).
And that's all there is to it.
So easy a bunch of kids (or old guys like me) can figure it out at their gaming table with real dice....

3:39:12 "So you only get spells back after a long rest? My guy only has 3 spell slots."
And so does your girl, Shadowheart. 3 each.
They get more when they level up.
And yes, you only get them back with a long rest which you can take whenever you want but it costs you 40 camp supplies each time.
Camp supplies are everywhere but you gotta be a loot goblin to gather them all the time.
    Why so few slots?
D&D has always been a resource management game.
I mean, look how powerful Magic Missile is. 3 bolts that never ever mess (more bolts as you gain levels).
Imagine if Gale could do that every round - compared to Bry,Zel's pathetic crossbow that hits half the time for half the damage, Gale would be doing 4x the damage all the time.
And in a few levels when he has Fireball, the world would burn and Bry,Zel should just give up; Gale won't need him anymore.
So to prevent wizards from being OP GODS of D&D, they have to carefully manage their resources.
Plan ahead, have the right spells prepared and hoard them; don't waste them frivolously.
    Game balance.
Gale can take over the world, but only a little tiny bit each day...

Yes, but THEY are not silenced.
    The area around them is.
If they move out of it, they won't be useless anymore.
Many spells affect an area instead of an individual.
If you move your mouse around, you can see the area.
Also, they guy who cast it has to concentrate on it.
    Kill him, it goes away.
Injure him, he has to make a roll to keep concentrating; if he fails the roll, it goes away.

1:41:00 Welcome to D&D, B! Don't know how many times I've lost a character from a bad roll, in this game and in the tabletop. 😂
Quick note, check your actions and abilities to see what else you can do in combat. Take your time and strategize, squeeze out every last action you can do on your turns instead of just passing after moving. You can do a lot more. You have an action, a bonus action and movement to play with. Skills are tied to your stats so be sure to check which of your skills use Intelligence, Dexterity, etc. to give you a better understanding of what you're good and bad at.

At 3:08:14 you used two healing potions.
You don't have an infinite supply of those.
    You know what is infinite?
    Short Rests.
    OK, well, not infinite.
You can only do it twice before you need to take a Long Rest to restore them.
The funny thing is, pretty soon you're going to want to take a long rest to get back all of Gale and Shadowheart's spells.
You'll be taking a lot of long rests.
Might as well use those 2 short rests to keep your HP filled up and SAVE those potions for emergencies.

Stop using your healing potions every 3 minutes.
You will run out of them.
    Shadowheart has healing magic.
Also, you have short rests that give back health.
Long rests give everything back: health, spells, everything - but you have to consume food and you could run out of that too (but there's tons of it everywhere if a you're a good looter).

  • @blakewalker84120

    3:57:39 "Try talking!"
Hah, you're shocked that a ROLE-PLAYING game has talking? :)
    Your chat was right.
Save, then talk, to anybody that doesn't look like an obvious enemy.
Two people on the side of the road having a chat is not an obvious enemy.
But then you moved your group a mile away.
    Two problems:
    1. All those rolls you have to make? Shadowheart is the one that gives you that guidance bonus but she has to be close.
    2. If a fight breaks out, it will take the first 2 rounds to get your group back together while the enemy pelts you with arrows and spells.
    Just stick together.
Now, if you KNOW you're walking into a fight, using tactics is interesting and helpful, but being a mile apart usually isn't, and it never helps in conversations.
Oooh, also, you missed out on impressing your friends.
Very often in dialog, if you make a good choice and watch the upper left corner of your screen, you will see something like "Shadowheart approves".
    Sometimes they disapprove.
I'm sure Shadowheart and Gale approve of talking to these Tieflings rather than killing them.
Why should we care if they approve of you?
It unlocks quests and character options.
Besides, you tried so hard to get into Shadowheart's pajamas last time you camped, don't you want her to like you more? I mean, like you like you...

Looks like you picked the good faction dark elf or Drow. The Lolth sworn Drow are the more evil/shady of the dark elves, even though your default option had an oddly color swapped pallette. I don't think I have run into much real urgency (as opposed to the 'sense' of urgency that the game pushes) and I've just finished act 2 on a more or less completionist run (done 3 on a less completionist play through), so far in both playthroughs I have only found one possible side quest (and its a pretty obvious one) where it really seems to be a thing but if you have a good save and can preplan and not letting the sense of urgency overwhelm will work just fine - turn based is excellent for that - plus its not the end of anything if it gets failed . But I am pretty used to game urgency being manufactured as opposed to real 'time peril for plot' in RPG's. In fact I try very hard to ignore that urgency as it leads to rushing and missing a lot of side stories. I have long rested a heck of a lot with no drawbacks food is everywhere after all and I wanted to push a few things that long rests will speed up. Lots of saves I totally agree with, coming from other RPG's, where its more or less essential, thats a long ingrained habit anyway :). Especially if you have an already defined idea of where you want to be heading with your character and one misclick fubars it. Personally I have no issue whatsoever with save scumming, for a first playthrough and most especially where its unlikely you will be doing a repeat performance in the near future, I think if you want to experience the most you can its a viable strategy for a casual dnd player. I'm certain long time DnD players would be horrified but each to their own rofl

dude you need to use all actions before you end your turn, some of those fight could have been ended very fast if you just use the attack actions, if the target is far and you cant get to him to hit him with melee attack, just switch to ranged attack at that turn and shoot, dont wast turns like that, also use magic that increase your armor or life in your tank while the others pump only damage, dont forget to dib your arrows ar daggers , etc on fire to get extra damage, you can find fire sorces every where like candles and torches also burned ground

Firstly be awate that you can change your class and stats at any time from a dead npc named withers that you will meet sometime.
Also try keep your character points even as you get bonuses for every 2 points above 10. I.e. a dex of 12 will add +1 do a dice roll, 13 will still be +1 but 14 will be +2.
You could multiclass later into rouge/warlock, just try stay 4 levels on a class before multiclassing to get your feat bonus.

1:56:14 "So how come it wasn't so simple last time guys? I don't understand. I lost the whole game last time."
    Was that a serious question?
    Here's why:
Short answer: You choose different dialog options and the outcome was differrent.
    Long answer:
    The first time:
1:36:39 You chose option 3: "No. You should be furious... shouldn't you?"
    Then the creatures mind slips...
1:40:12 You chose option 1: "Concentrate on its thoughts." (You could have chosen 2: "Take advantage of the lapse - break free." but you did not.
You needed a 10, you expected a 2 (confirmation bias), you got a 13. Success!
Then, Ironically, you said "Maybe it's all turning around, chat!"
1:40:57 You chose option 2: "Resist with everything you have."
Your die let you down and this time you got what you expected, a 2.
Tragically, this reinforces your confirmation bias while your previous 13 did not un-reinforce it.
    Also tragically, you died.
    The second time:
1:55:14 You chose option 2: "This isn't right. Step away."
You did not choose the same option as the first time but the dialog got back to the same exact option that you previously had at 1:40:12.
This time instead of choosing option 1, you chose option 2: "Take advantage of the lapse - break free."
    No dice, no rolling.
You simply broke free and killed it.

So get Fairy light buff to cast on enemys to get advantage to all of your rolls to hit enemys. And your cleric has buffs to better stealth saving throws to cast on your Rouges i believe.
