GROOVE METAL THEN VS. NOW
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ก.ค. 2023
- It's all about the groove! While other metal genres strive to push the envelope in speed or brutality, early groove metal pioneers differentiated themselves by emphasizing catchy, head-noddable grooves. Modern bands have added an evolving technical flair that make the grooves more complex at times - but hopefully without losing the essence that makes you want to headbang! Do you prefer the old or the new?

I’ve learned about a bunch of new songs and bands from these then vs now videos I otherwise probably wouldn’t have checked them out or heard about. So thanks for being my music plug.
Awesome!
Same here. Instantly made note of the newer ones
Literally why I love youtubers like this, always a gateway to metal I haven't heard before
YES!!!!!!!
I got an extra grey hair in my goatee when I saw Lamb of God in the ‘then’ section.
😂. Them and devildriver could have gone either way
LOG are still the kings
@@ThomasHogueGojira too
Agreed, I get the same feeling when I remember the first time I saw Lamb of god live is old enough to buy alcohol.
To me it sounds like: Traditional Groove Metal vs. Progressive/Technical Groove Metal. I prefer classical stuff - heavy and catchy 🎸🤘
While both have nice riffs, the modern groove metal often loses the "groove" in favor of overly complicate guitar riffs and drums beats, which defeats the purpose sometimes of creating a groove. Most of that old school stuff was heavy and straight 4/4 time signatures you could bob your head to easily.
Can't we all just agree that groove metal has just stayed beautiful throughout its existence?
I don’t dig the new djent kiddy shit myself
@@simonize251 Then don't listen to it but don't knock it lol. Might introduce people to the stuff you like. At the end of the day mate its all metal and its better than pop so can't we all just get along??
@@TheBanana93I'm all for letting people enjoy things as long as they aren't shit
@@digitalmortality2001thankfully, not everyone is as obnoxious as you.
@@ripit.3457 i can only hope most people actually have good taste
I definitely feel like the earlier stuff is groovier, the later stuff is just rhythmically complicated, which is not the same thing. That said, the Gojira riff was probably groovier than the Exhorder one that followed it. Go figure.
You're right modern groove is more tech/prog stuff, I really love it
Idk man the Exhorder one felt way groovier to me
I don't even think it's apples to apples
I thought the same thing with groove vs rhythm.
exhordee one was way more groovy
I really like more the old school Groove Metal, it had more bounce, riffs really make you wanna headbang
And most importantly its not agressive enough to make you want to break someones face
It almost has the nu metal bounce
@thesolersystemofgames841 what do you think nu metalers listened to?
That’s why Lamb of God is my all time favorite metal band. They consistently deliver pure American groove metal 🔥
Living Sacrifice yet
90s groove metal...was damn good
Fear Factory - Replica - what a groove
90's groove metal... Will always on 🔥
Pissing Razors - Burning Bridges is a super groovy riff if no one's heard it before. I remember hearing it back in highschool and digging it.
pissing razors does not get talked about enough!!! "in spite of my scars" is a banger too
Psycroptic is a bit more on the tech death side, but is super groovy. For those who like this style, I'd give them a shot!
Yeah!!! finally my subgenre! Long live Groove Metal and all Metal.
Amazing bands btw! I would love to have seen some other bands (Dagoba, Bury Your Dead, Throwdown, DamagePlan, Hellyeah - that 1rst album man!, Alien Weaponry, Byzantine, Hacride, Ektomorf, Lazarvs, Motograter).
Thanks great video
The new groove just don't have that catchiness that the old skool style has lol
New shit sounds all the same. Older stuff had more “color” to it
Maybe because I am old man, but love the older stuff. Great playing and vid mate😁
I’m 20 and prefer the old stuff and my favorite band is Pantera 😂
Thanks for throwing in Davidian!!!!!!🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
Great list, playing and vid :)
Malevolence also got some mad groove too btw
this is awesome my friend
Not such a groove fan.... but some classics here with Dimebag and Machine Head and Fear Factory..
Super stuff Hogey 🎸👉
Great playing! Those NJ Deluxe models really are something special. I own all 3 models and love them to death.
Awesome clip, Thomas 😎🤘🏻🎸 I like groove metal as well as other genres of metal like heavy, thrash, doom, and industrial just to name a few. Plus I’m a huge fan of pantera, exhorder, and fear factory.
Great Mashup!! 🔥 🎸
Tremendous add placement!! A Black Female hair product, ordering now!!
As The Palaces Burn has some of my favorite riffs
amazing tones holy
i love Jinjer and Bleed from Within but didn't realize they were being classified as groove metal. either way, good video 🤘
Welll, it doesn't sound groove and it's metalcore
@@maurobertolone5198 bro couldn't be more wrong, go listen to Ruina and Utopia by Bleed and you'll see why they're heavily influenced by groove metal. Their band literally started because of Pantera and LOG.
@@maurobertolone5198 Groovy metalcore?
They could both definitely be classed as groove metal imo. Basically zero hardcore influence and they have both stated groove metal bands as their influences
It’s heavily groove metal influenced metalcore. I wouldn’t outright call Bleed From Within or Jinjer groove metal though.
amazing as always.
Thank you!
Pissing Razors, Invocator, Hellgarden, Sign of the Southern Cross: a few lesser known Groove Metal bands 🤘🏻🍻
These picks are all amazing. Groove Metal is my favorite genre I'd say, so this video is made for someone like me. Loving the content
Great to hear! Thanks for the kind words
Amazing songs 🤘
I love your videos so godamn much man
These videos are just a fantastic concept. Production, choice everything is top notch
Love to hear it! Thank you
Completely agree. Maybe you’ve already posted one but I’d love to see a behind the scenes or a “making of” video. It must be a ton of work coming up with the set list, programming the drums, laying down the guitars, mixing etc…. Etc I’m guessing that by the time you get to the video work, all the audio is largely complete so you’re maybe playing “air guitar” to your own recordings? The technique really doesn’t matter much because the end result is just plain awesome! Just be fun to see how you do it.
@@hosdrummer6735 Thanks! And yep, you pretty much nailed it haha. It does take a long time to produce the audio especially. I've toyed with the idea about filming more of the process but never actually done it. Maybe I finally will!
Huge +1.. would love to see a behind the scenes of this video. Thanks Thomas!
👏👏👏👏 well done 👍 good sir!
Exhorder❤
Bleed from within is so good dude
Devil driver absolutely takes the cake for modern. All the classic stuff was great!
nice tone
Dudeee I love employed to serve 🤘
Love the discoveries to be had from this. Great vid and playing!
Aw man byzantine would have been an awesome one for this. Cool video, all great bands.
That Upon A Burning Body tho 👀 shit was actually groovin
As The Palaces Burn is in the "then" side? Wow I feel old. And praises to these twins, they got an awesome taste in music.
I'd consider 20 years ago "then" lol
This is badass all the way around
Glad to see new DD in the list im sure MS appreciates it
nice 🤟groove
I like the 'then' grooves better. You can nod your head to it, head bang, tap your foot etc. the 'now' riffs are to tech sounding, like just trying to play fast technical shit is the key component instead of playing what sounds good.
That BC Rich is way too cool.
Somewhere we lost focus and stopped making riffs that were fun and memorable and just decided to see who could make the most complex riffs...its the "i can play faster than anyone else" thing all over again
Agreed. I have a hard time finding modern bands that don't do that and it's a shame. It makes all the songs sound exactly the same and there's nothing to really headbang to. Maybe you'll get 10 seconds of a catchy riff, but that's it. One band I'm glad I found though is Sanguisugabogg. They're technically Death Metal, but they have some really dirty, catchy riffs that get stuck in my head.
We should’ve learned that when malmsteen started making music, yea he’s complex and fast and it’s cool at first but then gets old fast and theirs nothing memorable or emotional about it, that’s why Dime is my ranked 1 guitarist, he knew the true essence of music and that all that technicality and complex theory is bs
@@ChickenJoe-tq6xd very true ...I will always pick groove over speed and complexity
Old groove is king. Always, man
Hey Thomas! love your videos! Was wondering if you are going to do sequal to that deathcore vid you did a while back. If so, a few suggestions are Shrine of Malice, Oceano and To The Grave.
Thank you, noted!! Possibly
Big thanx! Great stuff! The only band I miss is PRONG. For me...they invented this style. And their new albums are also great!
This is epic and excellent slaying, may I ask how you got such ab amazing guitar tone?
BAD ASS!
Was like lamb of god in the then category??? Then realised that album is 20 years old, so now I feel old 😂
Groove the best🤘
Groove Metal nowadays its like metalcore 2.
Btw amazing video bro, keep this good work
Older stuff sounds like thrash 2
Love bleed from within
I love bleed from within
2 bands I currently listen to that sound groovy to me and sort have picked up the Pantera sound are Wake Up Frankie, where some of their licks sound exactly like Dime and Upon A Burning Body, where much of their newer material over the past 5-7 years have taken on a more Pantera vibe.
I feel like the modern groove bands are just way too concerned with writing "busy" riffs, rather than just writing a good one. The difference is apparent when you compare them.
Nice observation, dude.
I was contemplating noting this, too. Maybe I'm just old, but the constant noodling is starting to wear thin for me. Personally, I love a good, heavy, solid groove.
Tru
I am a big fan of Revocation. They have some good grooves, but sometimes I'm just like, man I need a break from all those notes
TRUE
Exhorder. Enough said. The kings of groove metal.
I've got to agree with the majority here. The 90's Slayer, Pantera, & Machine Head riffs were true to the Funk and R & B rule of always accentuating the "1". Which goes all the way back to the James Brown days with Bootsy Collins. If you want to keep it in the "deep pocket", you know where to put your roots. And that's why 90's metal has that foot stomping (or head moshing) groove. Modern metal explores the concept of high math, poly-rythms & other advanced timing concepts because it's never been done before. But there's still some crossover. Even Gojira's Stranded grooves like hell. Whereas Megadeth's Ashes in your mouth has note phrasing much like the new stuff. But in the end, it's all Heavy Metal & it's still alive and well. Even if it's a niche genre today. I love both the old and new & it'll never fall out of fashion.
Awesome to see Exhorder getting some recognition.
BLEED FROM WITHIN! 🙏
Then FTW!
“Then” all the way!
I was never too interested in this genre because I really just didn't like Pantera. But hearing all these other bands really opened my eyes to this genre.
Sorry about your lack of good taste 😂
Doesn't like Pantera? I don't think I could ever talk to you. Pantera is more than Walk and Cowboys From Hell.
Metal elitists 👆
@@handj4eternity If being right is being an elitist then I'll take it. Saying you like metal but don't like Pantera, is like saying you like Italian food but you don't like pasta. The shit just don't make sense.
besides Devildriver and Jinjer, all the "modern" examples are Metalcore
gojira?
Cowboys From Hell curb stomps every other riff on here🤘🤠
Groove metal kick ass 🤘
Ginjer to Lamb of God transition is so fucking good
Lamb of god are the.... GOATS
Exhorder reminds me of Powertrip. Hell yeahhhh
Wtf, I live near Glasgow and yet I'm only just finding out about bleed from within 😲
Even if I like Gojira, Jinjer and DevilDriver, definetly THEN!
Summary: it was sick back then, and it's sick now
Bleed From Within are so underrated
Nothing can beat Pantera, ever.
Nice playing, mate!
Not really heard the term groove metal before. I suppose it's any metal that is considered 'groovy'? lol
More evidence that absolutely nothing hits harder than Desecrator.
Great video mate
Could have added Chimaira - Resurrection in the new stuff. That song has easily one of the best riffs ever made. Also Lost Society - No Absolution.
exhorder grooves so fucking hard
Dude looks like a math teacher. Shreds like dimebag
Lamb Of God in the then category🥲....God that made feel old😂
Old Groove Metal: Slowed down thrash with Hair Metal and Progressive Metal influences.
New Groove Metal: A blend of Djent, Death Metal, Black Metal and Symphonic Metal.
Seeing As the Palaces Burn in "Then" makes me feel old 😂
You can't mention new Groove metal and NOT mention Slackjaw!
They are fantastic! Like as if Gojira and Pantera had a love child with all that southern, groovy vibe to it
…gotta check that out. Groove is my favorite
@@tommiethrash bass player/vocalist is Soup. He's a pretty popular gaming youtuber from SC. I've met him a handful of times. Super cool dude
Saw them in Jonesboro and got on stage. Gonna see if they'll let us open next time they come around 😂
@thedudethatplaysguitar9882 hell yeah, dude! I live in NC, so I've seen them play like 4 times 😅
It always feels good when they remember me 😌
@thedudethatplaysguitar9882 Also, I'm interested in your channel. Could you upload some guitar content? 👀 I always love to see other guitarists work
Any one who has been to a machine head gig will know we don't groove, its fucking chaos.
bro is a young verion of tha onne "black metal vs" guy
Other than Pantera I never considered the rest of them as groove metal. Maybe 90s Sepultura because they were pretty groovy on Roots and Chaos A.D.
Goddamn
“Then” kills “Now”. Not even a contest.
Like em both i prefer the older tho just sounds meaner , funkier
I appreciate you always having different facial hair for both sides
Thank you for noticing! 😂. I mean… that’s my twin totally playing at the same time 🫢
@@ThomasHogue W twin lmao
Lol I never realised that so many bands I love are actually Groove Metal 😅 guess I’m a groove metal fan
Pantera давно оставила всех за поворотом.
still my fav. Metal genre without Core in its Name
Both great but im old so im going with “then”😂
‘Then’ wins, no question.
Blw is metalcore isnt it?
