Epic Road Trip, a Blown Up Hemi, and Goodbye 6 Door Ford! Finnegan's Garage Ep.117

- This trip was so good that we had to split the video into two parts because so much stuff happened. First off, here's a little life update; We filmed this back in September but didn't get time to edit and upload the video until now. Immediately after filming our trip to Rocky Mountain Raceweek 2.0 (which is not in the Rocky Mountains), we left town to film Roadkill and Faster With Finnegan and we still aren't done filming those shows so we are working on Finnegan's Garage edits in our spare time.
Anyway, since September, a lot has happened. I've bought a new enclosed ramp truck, which you'll briefly see in this video, I've traded away the six-door Ford F650 for a '66 Chevy Suburban, which you'll also see in this video, too. We also had a small shift linkage issue in Blasphemi during Rocky Mountain Raceweek 2.0, which resulted in a major engine failure-again, it's in this video.
With any luck we'll upload Part 2 of the video next week. In that video, you'll see the rest of the road trip and you get to see my wife cry when I surprise her on our 15th wedding anniversary. :)

I love how Blasphemi's engine blowing is a non-issue at this point. It's just like *shrug* let's go drink some beers and have a good time!

Not even in the same world, but do kinda regret selling a clean 1973 wrong year nova ss from Kentucky. Actually didnt sell, instead i traded it for a Jetboat with a 455 Olds, which IS my brand of choice.
This is for you Finn, and all you jetboat lovers out there..
Twas a 1973 Wrighdt Stinger (i may have spelled that wrong but remember it did have a D in the name. Also said Norwalk Cali on the chrome nameplates) 17ft with the Same exact set of over the transom Bassett chrome headers as Mazdaratti (still shedding tears and carry anger towards those who stole that project), a berkeley non droop output with the winters shifter looking "jet-a-vator" control and a stock 455 with a car oil pan. As an Olds guy i can tell anyone who hates 455 oldsmobiles because of bad experiences in a jetboat....You MUST repeat MUST run the moroso flat bottom 10qt oil pan to make it live. Repeat again...MUST.
Anyway i shoved a 9.9:1 trw piston shortblock with box stock Edelbrock heads and a hyd flat tappet that had a good lump (.575/.575 and 250/255@.050 custom Lunati grind) harland sharps, holley street dominator and an old BG modded 850 annular. This engine had just ran 11.80s in my 3700lb 1970 442 so it made a hair over 500 on the pretend engine dyno.
The jetboat went 80.8mph via gps. Ran side by side with a friends efi 502 bbc gutted jetboat with 4 plastic racing buckets which i thought was a very cool look.
However the boat was Ratty. It floated and it hauled tail but was Rough, note the capitol R.
After almost 10 years i got old and got kinda scared of the wild jetboat ride. A good friend wanted it minus engine. He spent 5 years doing a resto and paint. He used my idea and went red white and blue with stars and stripes theme. His much more mild combo 455 went 65mph (through the same aa impeller it had all along).
Here is the sad story part..
One sad day, my friends garage went up in flames within 2 min and burned down including several collector car projects...a convertible 1968 442 (which caused the fire), 1965 coronet, 47 Chevrolet, a nash metro, a classic tractor, and at least 4 other vehicles i cannot remember at the moment.
The boat melted into a blob. I had recently sold my polished offy tunnel ram for big block olds which was on the boat engine at the time. Even the intake melted and drooped.

Ok back. Thankfully insurance paid for my friend to build a huge 60x40 i believe (?) Pole barn concrete floor freaking garage palace. My friend also got a really decent promotion and has been able to rebuild a stable of classics race cars bikes and boats.
Amen.

Blasphemi being a manual (stick) car is so friggin awesome but damn, chasing the times that Mike is , I reckon it must up the difficulty level by about a billion billionth. So much respect, even the idea of dreaming of a stick shifted, blown hemi in a old full sized sedan means that he should never ever have to buy himself a beer in a pub for the rest of his life. Great entertainment, great showbiz, great work.
It is good to have some Finnegan back on the Tubes. Sad times, because aside from the OG ramp truck, the six door was my favorite.

I once did a car stereo upgrade while on a road trip. My friends said I was crazy and it was a waste of time. Now that Finnegan has done it I have PROOF it was the right thing to do.

I've been trying to decide if I should buy a cool fire truck to tow my streamliner to Bonneville when I already have an International crew cab box truck. Your video just convinced me I should get what I want, a 79 American LaFrance with a turbo'd 8V-92 Detroit & a 5-speed with a 2-speed. This thing has all the whistles, sirens & bells! ;-)
you'd be getting dangerously near gallons to the mile territory in something like that..

Nice rig. All it needs is a Detroit swap to a 12V71ti (ti = turbo'd and intercooled). Those old 'buzzin' dozens' are my favorite Detroits. They sound like a diesel Ferrari.

The tote idea is a good one, made better by the list of contents. You should have the list of contents at each box when you are loading up. As a next item is added, add that to the list.
If you have a laminator that can do full pages, laminate the contents list. That way, when you use something from in the box, you can use a sharpie or other felt marker to cross off the item used, and keep the inventory list up to date.
This way when something is used up you don't spend hours digging through everything " 'cause you know it's in here somewhere" and don't know it's gone. Being able to edit your inventory as it changes could be quite helpful.
This brings back so many memories. Saturday nites in a buddy's garage,. Replacement fuzes all night long.

Pro Tip: Go to Harbor Fraud and buy a box of Marine (Adhesive Lined) Shrink Tube, 67598. Comes in an assortment of sizes, (black only).
Use colored shrink tube for over the top ID, or color coordinating purposes, ONLY.
Seal ALL your wire connections, you'll be glad you did. Makes it waterproof, and also helps with vibration-related wiring failure.

Stuff happens but when it happens to you it costs BIG money! I really like your suburban. It's one of my bucket list trucks. I had one and a friend just had to have it back. Mr Fink is from my hometown. I remember some of his earlier drag vehicles he definitely has moved on up the the drag racing world. The days of watching drag racing behind the events center.

That old blue Suburban you guys are pushing is from my home town Casper, Wyoming the plate number 1 is the county designation Natrona which is where Casper is located. It is where they did this year's Street Outlaws Memphis' National shootout this Spring. They want to do it again next year. I am actually watching this season on MotorrTrend.

They now make heat shrink butt connectors that are NOT crimp connectors, they have low temp solder inside. So when you put your wires in and hit it with the heat gun, it solders the wires together and insulates them!
