Much loved performer John Inglis Young, OAM (born 21 June 1950), known professionally as John Paul Young, is a Scottish-born Australian pop singer who had his 1978 worldwide hit with "Love Is in the Air". His career was boosted by regular appearances as a performer and guest host on Countdown, a 1974-1987 TV series for Australia's national broadcaster ABC. Besides "Love Is in the Air", Young had top ten chart success in Germany and the Netherlands with "Standing in the Rain" and four other top ten hits in South Africa, including No. 1 hits with "I Hate the Music" in 1976 and "Yesterday's Hero" in 1975.On 27 August 2009, Young was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. But to Ian 'Molly' Meldrum and thousands of fans, he was known by his special nickname, Squeak. Peace out.

    Two things.
First, “Love is in The Air” was a hit in Canada for Martin Stevens, a Francophone artist who sang the song phonetically in English. Sadly, Stevens passed away earlier this year at the age of 69.
Second, as others have noted, this was written by Harry Vanda & George Young who were members of The Easybeats. You must check out “Friday On My Mind” which as about as far removed from “Love is In The Air” as you can get. Other great Easybeats songs are “Falling Off The Edge Of The World” and “Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight”.

John Paul Young (who's nickname was Squeek) had a string of hits in the 70s, It's A Long Way To Pasadena, Yesterday's Hero, I Hate the Music to name a few. They were all written by Vanda and Young (George Young was Angus Young's brother). They were good pop songs. Then Vanda and Young took a little detour into disco, giving JPY a great song call Standing In The Rain. Love Is In The Air followed, and it had a very similar beat. This song is remembered for Strictly Ballroom, but I prefer Standing In The Rain.

When I was just a kid, my parents would put us to bed, then sit in their bed and listen to the radio. I remember this song on many occasions, and I grew to love these old songs. When I hear this song, it brings me back to 1980, or 1981 when I was 5 or 6, and listening to my parents radio in the next room. My parents would actually smoke in their bedroom! Now that is unheard of, but back then, it was not so unusual. I can still remember feeling comfort in the smell of smoke from my parents bedroom. My dad would walk passed the doorway, and motion for me to close my eyes, and my mom would come sit on my bed, and look at me with her ocean blue eyes, and ask "Why aren't you sleeping baby boy?" It blows my mind that my parents were the ages of only 30 and 27 back then. They were so young! I love old music so much!!! If an old car is in front of me in traffic, and I smell the exhaust, that takes me back. I miss those times!

another banger from John Paul Young is "Yesterday's hero", a song seemingly about a musician who used to be famous. "take a look at me, I'm yesterday's hero". the song is up tempo despite the lyrics. I guess it's the destiny of most people who were famous at some point in their lives.

John Paul Young, a Scottish born Aussie, who was very popular in the 70's here in Australia and also a bit of a heart throb. Check out his other songs, '" I hate the music" and " Yesterdays Hero " etc.

This classic song became the climatic song of the excellent (but sadly mostly undiscovered by mass audiences) 1993 feel good dance film "Strictly Ballroom" starring real life ballroom champion Paul Mercurio who graduated as a good actor here. I will always associate this song to that film.

    Yeah g'day,
WOW, we finally got Squeak with another Harry and George creation, and Harry and George were part of the Easybeats (60s) and they ended up producing a pop of Australian lot of music in the 70s. A note for Jay, George was the older brother to Angus and Malcolm of ACDC he even produced their very early stuff.
Harry and George along with working with Squeak, were their own band of 'Flash and the Pan '.
See you round like a rissole.

This song reminds me of the movie "Strictly Ballroom". This song features prominently in it along with "Standing In The Rain", both by John Paul Young, and it is so freaking awesome, both the movie and the songs. It's a fun movie from Australia.

Jay - that wasnt just the bass making that "heavy" sound - that was a Clavinette/Clavichord layered on top of the bass. Think "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder. Thats what gives the lower registers that crunchy "wah wah" effect.

Jay: That wasn't an electric bass, buddy. It was a Clavichord. It's a keyboard instrument most famously used in the intro of "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder. And that wasn't brass/horns, right afterwards. It was just a brief flourish of rhythm guitar. The song doesn't have any brass instruments, just a full string section (violins, violas, cellos, double bass), piano, Clavichord, guitars, bass, and drums/percussion.
Amber: This **is** a Disco beat, though the song was also an Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock crossover. JPY was a major star in Australia, but he wasn't a strictly Disco artist, and this was his only major international hit hit. It was definitely arranged in a Disco style, with it's "four-on-the-floor" beat, the swooping string section, the thumping electric bass, and the funky flourishes like the above-referenced Clavichord.
