    The chemistry between Pacino and Depp was just brilliant in this film. The fugazi scene, the hit in the basement, even the ending with Lefty -accepting his fate- quietly leaving his belongings in an open drawer to be discovered by his wife later. All very memorable scenes. Pacino is my favourite actor and I’ve seen at least 95% of his work. An artist truly passionate about his craft.

    My favorite scene was when Lefty and "Donny" were standing outside and watching the bosses enter the building. That look on Lefty's face of him trying to look important, but feeling left out was all so pathetic. It really made you feel for the poor guy. He was the best man he could be, but he wasn't boss material. I remember as a kid seeing some of the "big guys" in the neighborhood - they seemed like Royalty to us kids. They never looked at any of us either. I know that feeling of being on the outside looking in. It didn't hurt us kids, but must have really hurt a made guy, knowing he was never going to be a top man.

      I caught that comment too and pondered it today. Being a "made man" made Lefty right ( how 'bout that wordplay, huh?). But from my point of view, Donnie was right. Comparing Cosa Nostra to the Army ( or the military in general): both have well-structured hierarchies; lower-level members are called "soldiers"; in both organizations you could be ordered to kill someone you don't know by someone you don't really know; in both, members have an image to maintain; there are rules to be followed; and you're on-call 24/7 - first time I've resorted to that term ( I'm an oldtimer).
      I know there are many other similarities and tremendous differences, but on the whole, I'd say military life and life in Cosa Nostra are more alike than different.

    • @TheLight965
      @TheLight965 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@cedricgist7614 Yeah, especially since boss Salvatore Maranzano, a Roman Empire enthusiast, modeled the heirarchy of Cosa Nostra after the Roman military's chain of command (Godfather 2 even mentions it). The sad truth Lefty here is implying is that soldiers arent forced to lead their friends into a room and put two in the back of their head, that there's a slight comfort in shooting an enemy whose family you don't know, and whose face you might not even see. Wiseguys don't have that comfort. Their killers greet them with a disarming smile.

    • @cedricgist7614
      @cedricgist7614 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLight965 - Good comment. The mention of Maranzano reminds me of the scene in "The Valachi Papers" where Maranzano gives Valachi a book on Caesar's campaigns ( if I rightly recall). I know now that " The Valachi Papers" wasn't as accurate as I thought it to be ( shame on me ) but I often find myself mimicking Joseph Wiseman saying, "And my driver, Joe Valachi" - then I'll ad lib, "And my good friend, Joe Valachi" - all the while recalling that Valachi was conveniently absent when Luciano's hitmen took out Maranzano.

      If I rank all the mob movies I ever saw I would say
      Goodfellas & Donnie brasco (can't pick one)
      H.B.O GOTTI (1996) Armand Asante
      The godfather don't kill me I just like those movies more
      They many saint's of Newark ( I liked it but it's not close to being as good as these other movies)

      Bronx Tale was a good fantasy movie.. a la maybe something Chaz Palmentieri saw. But it was fiction. Flirtation with the life. Real life mob guys are predatory scumbags.

    • @faznyc1
      @faznyc1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    On-screen, the chemistry between Lefty (Pacino) and Donnie (Depp) was off the charts great. I love the follow up to that car scene. Lefty doesn't get whacked, gets upset when he gets a lion as a gift from Sonny Black. Donnie tries to get Lefty to look on the bright side that he didn't get clipped and Lefty denies ever suggesting that he was going to get killed.

      To me the best moment was when Lefty tells Donnie he loves him. It was so genuine, and even though he was a mobster, you kinda appreciate him in way.
      In real life Sonny Black (they switched them in the movie) really loved Donnie Brasco.

    Every Italian man thinks he can cook. But, every Italian man will also tell you his mom or his grandmother is the greatest cook who ever lived. Anybody who grew up in an Italian family, no matter how old they are, remembers their grandmother’s sauce/gravy. How her house smelled all day while she was cooking. Italian men do make good cooks, but nothing like grandma could do.
