Absolutely killer! My private teacher has been prescribing some Guiliana tunes to learn by ear, all of which have been annihilating me. Your stuff has really let me get a grasp on the man's playing. Thanks a ton.
Hey Nate! I just want to you to know that Your youtube channel has become an obsession to me. I´ve been having a tough time lately (for like a year or something...) when it comes to practicing. I knew I needed to practice more but I did not know what I was suppose to be working on. Then all of a sudden I stumbled upon you video on microtime and I was freaking hooked! Suddenly I realised that what I actually need to be practicing is time, feel and cleaness, not chops and flashy licks. These last few weeks i´ve been really advancing as a drummer, which feels awesome. Thank you!
hey, cool video. I just wanted to add a little philosophy behind mark's method and why it's so cool. The rate change that he talks about is also another great way to get your limbs working together and to prevent licks to develop in your muscles memory. This in turn helps with improvisation so that when you are inspired by the music to play a certain pattern/rhythm or create beats based on the music, you're able to without falling into the grains of licks you made up in the practice room. So these simple ideas of rate change are meant to be played out of musical context and be completely separate from musicality. But there are no rules.
Ahhhhhh!!! I finally understand it ! I don't use metronomes .I play and learn by ear, and don't really count. However I listened intently to your counting and when you started in on the drums and I get it. I'm going to try this tomorrow and learn/play that last bit you played. Thanks ~
Great job on decoding Mark Guillana drumming, I downloaded the PDF file, the "Mark" Exercice. I was wondering if you had any other written exercices about Mark Guiliana. Let me know, Merci beaucoup!
Truth be told I put that together because I was too cheap to buy some 14" A hats, so on a whim I decided to try the Eric/Chris thing with two of my existing crashes. Fell in love with the sound and the rest is history:)
(Sees video title) hmmm yes I would like to play like Mark Guiliana. (watches first 5 minutes) wow thats cool I should be able to do that. (sits down at drum kit) DEAR GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE (three days later) I DID IT. TAKE THAT MARK GUILIANA! (watches rest of video) welp.... in all seriousness though, this is a great vid. I consider myself to be a pretty advanced drummer and I always learn a lot from your videos.
Dylan Walsh great comment, and I just had a good time checking out your channel. Think you called out the central flaw with this video - that I didn't build a good enough bridge between the relatively easy concept at the beginning and the stuff I was doing at the end. A fair criticism would be that it's essentially "here's something anybody can do in five minutes, now watch me fuck around with it without really telling you how." Anyway, I don't consider myself advanced, probably because every day I discover a 17 year old gospel drummer who plays circles around me, but I do think the 80/20 for guys like us (your Seven Days video is great), with a least basic timekeeping, touch, and upload speed, is practicing improvising between and among subdivisions without cheating and always pushing ourselves with the metronome. Which, it seems like you're also doing. Anyway, great to know you!

Thanks dude! Glad the videos have helped!
By ear is almost impossible, unless you have an app that you can use to put the songs in slow motion.

What's the song at the beginning ?
Szymon Raćkowski Hey man it's an original track my buddy Teriver wrote for me. terivercheung.com :)
Nowodays everytime i see a jazz drummer he's got Eric Harland's Hi-Hat :) Should i drill my own to sound like him ?
Great tips btw.

cool stuff
Just found your channel and have been tearing through your videos. Are you NY based?

what metronome app are you using?
excellent drum tips . Why not do a months worth of breaking down Guiliana's liks
What's the hi-hat setup?
I'm sorry but why everything is played displaced of a sixteenth note from the metronome?
Mind blown...(in a good way,)
i like your content but the way you explain things feels extremely nebulous and convoluted to me
