  • Pacific island ecosystems are one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, with high levels of endemism. But did you know that Invasive Species are the primary cause of extinction on our islands?
Learn how Pacific communities are protecting globally significant biodiversity areas from threats of invasive species through the GEF 6 Regional Invasive Project (RIP). Strengthening national and regional capacities to reduce the impact of Invasive Alien Species on globally significant biodiversity in the Pacific - GEF 6 RIP commenced in 2019.
Featured highlights in the video includes:
Developing the first National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plan (NISSAP) to ensure invasive species management is coordinated and implementing across the different sectors involved in Tuvalu.
Successful rat eradication in Erooj, Republic of Marshall Islands
Restoring Mt Talau, a priority ecological area in Vavaú Tonga, and protecting key endemic species, including Tongan Whistler or Hengahenga
Management of feral pigs and key priority weed species in Niue
Establishment of the Pacific Regional Invasive Species Management Support Service (PRISMSS), a coordinating mechanism designed to facilitate the scaling up of operational management of invasive species in the Pacific
Let’s all contribute to preserving our planet’s rich biodiversity!
The GEF 6 RIP is funded by the Global Environment Facility, implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme, and executed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme. The Project works primarily in the Marshall Islands, Niue, Tonga, and Tuvalu and has a regional component. Implementation of the GEF6RIP is supported by the Pacific Regional Invasive Species Management Support Services (PRISMSS).
Project objective: Reduce the threats from Invasive Alien Species (IAS) to terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity in the Pacific by developing and implementing comprehensive national and regional IAS management frameworks.
