  • One guest at Monticello described the food as “served in half Virginian, half French style, in good taste and abundance." While Thomas Jefferson is often lauded for his influence on American cuisine, the cooking and skill came from the enslaved chefs at Monticello who were masters in their craft.

Join us on Tuesday, September 29, at 1:00 p.m. EDT for a special cooking livestream with culinary historian, Leni Sorensen. Dr. Sorensen will demonstrate period cooking in the Monticello kitchen and discuss the enslaved people who grew and prepared the food for Jefferson and his family.

For those interested in the cookbook, it is Mary Randolph's The Virginia Housewife. Amazon has copies of it, and I found this one too that looks interesting. It is a modern version that shows the original recipe (most of them from her book, but not all) and then a modern version after. I have a couple medieval cookbooks like that too. Her original can also be found on line at gutenberg (one of the first links in the search results) if you just google her name and cookbook title. amzn.to/3tDiTer

People today would starve to death if they had to do all of what my ancestors did to feed the people who owned them and themselves. My people are awesome geniuses!

You strike again. You come to attack a live cooking demonstration. Good grief you idiot. Let's be honest. You are not one bit interested in what the slaves ate. You come only to attack and make a politcial statement. What the hell do you want? Slavery ended with the passing of the 13th amendment do what is it you want? Leave historic sites along, they aren't the guilty party!
