I know the Hellcat won, but you gotta admit, a 30 yo Buick with a v6 engine actually INITIALLY PULLED AHEAD of a v8 with 700-plus horsepower, that's IMPRESSIVE!
Chris Robinson Gotta love that Buick torque!
And you can even tell the GN was burning the tires. Drop a 285 at least on the back for more grip and race them again. I’m sure that first 0-60 the hellcat going to stay behind it
Chris Robinson,
You do realize that the GN has over 200 more whp than stock, right?
bobforpples but still 1987 vs 2018? Technology is also an issue . The GN deserve it 😂
@@gongolie unless u put some 315s on the cat??
33 years later and a v8 is about 1 second faster than a 33 year old v6 Buick. Just shows how much of a badass this Buick was back in the day.
These Grand Nationals ran mid to high thirteens. They were fast for the day because there were virtually no other car companies making performance vehicles in the 1980's, but they were still slow by vintage muscle car standards, and wouldn't stand a chance against any modern muscle cars today.
I’m 12 and I have one I want to get going again
Buick wins!
@@EricaEchos It barely lost to a 700HP modern car. That means it would beat a 392, 5.0 and possibly a stock new Vette. Hardly slow.
@@davecozzi9721 how do you define "barely lost?"
What were the ET's and MPH? It wasn't even a real race. It looks like they only ran maybe an 1/8 mile on an unprepped road, and the Hellcat undoubtedly had to baby it off the line, and was still 3 cars ahead and pulling away hard.
If they ran a full 1/4 mile I bet it would have been 10 cars ahead.
The stock GNX's were mid to low 13 second cars, which is SLOW by today's standards.
That turbo v-6 was no joke! Still a Beast today.
FACTS!!! 200 on the dash
Buck Cannon
Agreed brother. 👍👍👍
The twin turbo V-6s today are no joke either, but every muscle head thinks they are. Dust any Dodge SRT 8 all day 🤷🏻♂️
@@j3zhott not 200 on the dash by any means
Yes sir
For having half the horse power and being 30 years older that grand national held it's own.
There's a reason even non car guys like me love the GN. The GN was something special. It's like the 2 stroke streetbike of the car world.
That'll be the hellcat in 30 years! Lol if it survives that long.
I'd still rather have the Grand National.
Any day of the week.
No doubt!
That's exactly what i said to myself
I love the Grand National. The GN is still running after 30 years and the Hellcat might not be in 10 years. Since Fiat has merged with Chrysler the quality has gone down the drain.
I just bought one in feb of 2019...badass car..gn s rule!!
It’s cool how much love there still is for the V-6 Buick💪🏻
Fucking right cuz, I have been a owner of the grand national for two years and I have a 454 big block in mine
U right. Man the Corvette group was piss off. How fast they were. Much like the DEM'S. AT TRUMP.
My grandpa used to race in a gnx
@@evanstraintubeyt6950 Back in the 80's I had the baddest street car in town. A 1970 Cuda 340 4-speed that my uncle built. It was Badass and nobody could out run it. Until, one night a stranger came in the pool hall we all hung out at and asked; who owns the Mopar outside? Everyone pointed at me, he asked if I would be interested in a street race, of course I said hell yeah, what you got? It was Black with GNX badges on it, I had never seen one or knew anything about them. Cost me 500 bucks to find out how Badass those cars were!! 😭😭
@@chucklucas5326 ooh damn dude. Do u still have the cuda?
As everyone knows...in '87 this thing was a MONSTER!! Still Beautiful too.
Still is bro you trippin 🔥🔥🔥this will always an forever be a legend if they beef up the engine an transmission an put a better turbo charger it will whip that hellcat ass 🔥🔥🔥seen it done already an it looked meaner then 87
The reason why today's muscle cars are nothing but fake metal light weight... That's all it is.old school muscle cars RULES none of that pussy ass nitrous...
@@Mr.Frost181 yea, all you need to do to the buick is change the entire power train setup for about 10x what the car is worth and itll whip that $40,000 hellcat. Lawl you're a fool. The Buick is awesome, no doubt, but it will lose until you put on 15,000 grand in extra bolt ons, hopefully whatever you bolt on doesn't break that little 4 speed automatic it came with then you're looking at another 15,000 grand for the power train.
@ didn't know a power train set up was around 400,000$
Somebody watches too much fast & furious
Gotta love how a 30 year old car is still even considered for a race against a car built in this day n age
Even though the Buick lost, you gotta give props to a car being able to out launch the other car while literally smoking the tires..
did the Hellcat have its traction control on?
Just shows how badass the GN was back in the day. 30 years later and he still hung in with the "best" the 21st century had to throw at it.
Along with 26 MPG.
Amen
The hellcat is something you go out and buy. The grand is an extension of something you put your heart and soul into.
Yeah if you're modding something and put a lot into whatever your building, but it would basically be the same thing and was also purchased in all reality
Heart and soul? More like Time and Money.
shawn h. What do you think heart and soul stands for? If you have time for a hobby and putting your signature on something - you put your heart & soul and a fraction of the cash ( you would pay for a new car ) into restoration. A new car which is not an extension of your self - it’s just a car payment and you’re driving the same car 1000’s of other folks drive. That’s one reason why classic muscle cars get they’re name for that includes heart n soul from the owner’s hobby - and that’s owning a piece of history that he helped restore. However, to each his own. To the Classic enthusiasts - If you have the time, you’ve got to have the money
@@terrencemiller5284 I pour my heart and soul in supporting my family and home. Whatever free time and money I have goes into my hot rod... Regardless if it was bought or built. I think that's the better explanation.
@@451dskots88 i can dig it. I have kids and they have kids. Of course heart and soul goes to the Family where it should go !! My deal is my spare money comes from the heart and soul and goes into an extension of myself and that's a classic car which in my opinion holds more heart and soul than a 3-5 year car payment for something new that will lose it's value before the heart & soul extension ever will - and that " extension of myself" is also Family. Peace
I had an '87 GN back in the day. When they were new, they were the fastest car around. Still love hearing that big turbo spool up.
Not bad for a 30 year old car vs a 700+ supercharged hemi!
+Edward Pate Yea ...... he lost !
right turbo v6
+BIGBADWOOD its pretty impressive that a 30 year old car only lost by one length to a brand new 700hp car.
yup 30 year old car and a turbo v6 ...classic
is the hell cat made in USA?
CAMAROS are imported from Canada lol... so Fricken sad
+HeyAinokea News flash: So are challengers lol
I’ll take the 87 grand national any day
That thing is a smoke show. Dream car
its my dream car since i was a kid id pick a white one over the black though
@@leejee88 I'm 55 years old and I've never seen a white one.
@@chucklucas5326 Never thought I'd see one but I did .all original dude that owned it was older than you .red interior all original it was more like a pearl white color.beautiful car non the less more so than the black one imo
@@leejee88 Only one Grand National was made in white, it was an option for the 1987 model and only one was made, it was a special order car. The T- types were commonly white, but not the Grand National.
@@chucklucas5326 sounds right the one I saw was a T-type
It's a privilege to me to have grown up in the 80s... Listening to all those Muscle cars by the Bass in your chest in my high school parking lot!
My Dad had a Buick Regal T type that I wouldn't even think about touching :)
I'd rather own a grand national any day.. Just because it's one of the fastest v6 GM ever produced and its old school
Take away the turbo then what do u have? Another v-6 regal don't ever compare to a real muscle car. Not a juiced up v-6 regal. Junk then junk now.
@@kenbloomingburgj6597 what're you high?? or stupid? or both??!! you don't know what you're talking about LOL....
the Grand National was a legend the minute it rolled off the assembly line, Car & Driver is still in shock after printing 4.9, 0 to 60 numbers back in 1986 and high 13's in the qtr mile!! STOCK CAR!
and is one of the most sought after muscle cars to date! and it's known as the 'last of the muscle cars' so do some research before you make a fool out of yourself dude!
@@BlacKnightRising like I said the Gran national is a piece of garbage. If it was as good as y'all say why only make it one year. They were junk. Do u see any more being produced. Your just another wannabe know it all. My cousin had one and all it did was drink gas burn oil and tranny slipped the rear end blew the body rotted. Come again know it all.
They were great but only in a straight line, they just couldn't corner worth a damn. Great looking car tho, keep it on the street!
@@kenbloomingburgj6597 Only make it one year? Buick Grand National was made from 1982 - 1987 dude. Buick GNX was the last of them. The carmanufacturer STOPPED making these cars just to save Corvette ffs. These was so popular they even got problem making them in time for the customers. Same shit that Dodge had with their Challenger Hellcat, that got so popular they had to put the entire Charger Hellcat assembly down for 1½ years and only concentrate doing Challenger Hellcats!
Look at you, can't car history for shit, so don't comment if you don't know shit.
The V6 Buick built for these cars was also more reliable then any engine on cars out there. That's why MOST of these original engines have survived for over 30 years and still sitting in the car if you finds an original Buick Grand National. Every other carbrand have most likely swapped their engines once or twice during these 30 years. Because, V8's and shit like that worn out like nothing in the 80's. The dark era for every gasoline V8. They started to do diesel V8's, but that flopped, because americans couldn't handle the "knocking" sound from a diesel V8 these days.
Many sportscars also had the V6 engine as original engine, the V8's was only "optional" these days. Brands like Pontiac, Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac used V6 engines mostly in their cars. But the power wasn't enough. Americans craved their V8's back even if they had trouble with the new emission-laws and shit that almost killed the entire carindustry in USA in the 80's. Yeah, I hear that you have, ehm, read things about carhistory...or not. I am from Sweden even, knowing more shit about your carhistory then you do. What a shame.
i lined up with a g.n. once, i had a 5.0 thunderbird.. i may as well have been in reverse when we launched..
Bill Boyd should’ve lined up with a stock lx mustang with 373s 5 speed and good slicks and the story would’ve been different, I know
But you tried
Lol, thats funny.
@tyler amburg facts
@tyler amburg Really tho 🤔🚬
the legend pulled off like hell, even with the age gap ... love these two
And the gearing gap! The GN is still a 4 speed.
Would still rather have the GN.
No, you wouldn't. I bought one new.
@Chill Will I have a 1972 Challenger that I won in a raffle. I'm putting a HellCat engine in it. New, crate, Mopar. I loved my GN at the time, but I LOVE
this even more? Lot's of stuff to upgrade. More than just stuffing an engine in. worth every penny to do. My first ride was a Charger. Love MOPAR.
@Chill Will I'm a Mopar guy, went to the dark side and bought GM, because it was the only badass car at the time? lol. Had an uncle that worked for
Mopar. Worked his way up from changing light bulbs in the rafters to being an executive. I told him if Mopar made a car like the GN, I would buy it.
The 80's were dark days for performance. Until the GN came along. It stunned everyone.
Scurvyswine - No, the Last One, the GNX !!!!! :)
@Chill Will Shifting into 2nd gear from a dead stop, auto trans, auto shifting, would kick the rear out a bit into the other lane. I took a test drive with a salesman.
I swear to god, his finger imprints were in the center console and door handle? He was around 60. I was 24. I tried shifting manually ONCE? By the time I was
shifting into second, I should have been shifting into third. lol. I never did any upgrades to mine. Couldn't afford it at the time. It was all I could do to make
car payments and insurance payments.
As far as i know, GNs are pretty legendary for how astonishingly good they are at putting power to the ground.
Real Talk This is quite possibly the baddest Buick Ever made Period.🤫🚬
Superman, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, the Buick Grand National, and Eddie Van Halen all had something in common. People could not believe what they were seeing when they watched them perform. Truly awe inspiring.
Especially mind blowing was the v-6. There was NOTHING exciting about a v6 until this came along and it spanked the Vette. In 87, the GNX was the fastest car in America and it could out run a Lamborghini Countache. That car was IT in the 80s.
Honestly that Buick did a lot better then i thought it would it's pretty awesome.
Than *
Buick grand national beautiful
thekiddsean330 yes it's nice and it's bad ass especially since it's a v6
If you're a grandmother, it might be.
it is a beautiful car.
Mitchell Wood facts
captaincooool Facts
"were you racing this guy sir?" no i was just trying to catch up to tell him that i like his car
HAHAHAHAHAA
Listen domass the Buick Gran National smaller engine ok turbo the friking hellcat modern technology bigger engine nothing to be ashamed old school still a force and respect in the street .
It was close, considering how much technology has evolved.
That grand national has no more than 300 hp the updated one came with 275 so that was probably around 250 that grand national imagine if they pump motor app and put about 2 to 3 more hundred horsepower into it it would have made that he’ll can’t look stupid
I'd take that Grand National anyday over a Hellcat. I remember when those things came out and they were kicking the shit out of everything in sight. It made the Corvette look slow and GM couldn't have a V6 Buick beating up on their halo car, so they killed it off. Greatest car of the 80s hands down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grand National is a nice looking car, and a fast car! I've always liked them.
It matters NOT that a blown HC torched a modded GN.
That Grand National is absolutely GAAAWWGUS!!! I'll never forget the 1st time I heard 1 of those beasts scream past me at high speed. (roughly around 1987-88) Sounded like KITT. Looked sinister af. BIG props for restoring a Grand National Treasure!
I know to most people, it's clear the Dodge won....but when a 1987 Buick with 425 hp comes this close to a new Hellcat, I'd have to say it didn't win anything. To me, the Buick won.
Back in the day thats what we did, we sand bagged everyone. Always keep it close. I live the GN but take them both to the strip and get proper et times and trap speeds. The GN is not going to compete against the hellcat.
Couldnt agree more..gns are just bad ass stock out the door...if anyone says different they need to pull their head out of their ass !!
Bill White yes a loss is a win a win is a loss and when you go pee pee you like to sit and pee pee don't you. What a stupid comment
Joe Smith I think your comment was more stupid than his comment, a 30 year old car vs a new modern car with "707" hp it still barely wins that's sad about the hellcat
This race was barely an eighth of a mile and the Hellcat was putting bus lengths on it. If this went out to a 1/4 it wouldve been a complete slaughter. Only reason why it looked close was because by the time they got into it the race was already over.
Can you imagineThose grand nationals especially the gnx models how awesome and intimidating they were especially considering this car was mid 1980s. And what makes it even more incredible was it was just a 3.8 liter v6 with turbo. It's was and still is so menacing in appearance and performance. Absolutely dominated Corvettes back in the day and I'm sure that's one of the reasons it didn't stick around any longer than it did. My dream car.
So true along with 26 MPG.
I was taught a lesson. Back in 1987 I had a brand new IROC 5.7, 1st yr. Raced a stock 1987 Grand National and I got smoked bad. He didn't want to race and I kept on egging him. Finally agreed and he punished my new IROC 5.7. School was in session for me!
G.N. still a good looking car to this day.
That GN held its own.
I'd still take the Grand National such a awesome car.
Before the Hell Cat there was the Grand National!! It still looks tough!!
Lol the fact that the Grand National barely lost says alot about new cars
GN was stock. hellcat is a suped dodge
+Bon Jovi the gnx came with full bolts on oh wait ever gn did
+bon jovi And ? bolt ons for a turbo dont really cost much. that Hellcat is around 80k ? lol
No No No my buddies ran 14.3 flat right out of the box. Granted he ordered the #1 option on the dealer sheet. Buick dealers offered 3 level packages. No T tops, no power windows.
He changed the ram air to the intercooler and got 14.1, then a tester pipe instead of the Cat, got 13.9 and with a mild chip got 13.7 all on the factory tires..
In all fairness: that GN was modified and, I suspect the Hellcat was bone stock.
Remember the even more rare '89 Turbo Trans Am !
The turbo trans am pace car was the fastest car in the 80s with the V6 buick grand international engine.
I'd still take the GN over the hellcat any day.
theres just something gangster about the GN
That's amazing for 3.8 v6 respect to all the 80s G-bodys
That buick came ready. The hellcat won but didnt leave it far
Gez u fine asf 👀 whats ya @ ?
The gap would increase the further the race went on for
In 87 the GN came out and caught everybody off guard with its performance in 1969 what was the car that had got the same reaction
I'll take the Grand national, love that car especially with ttop.
The grand national is fucking hideous, its literally a mix between a monte carlo and your grandmother's car.
@@rulingmoss5599 i bet you are fucking hideous and what ever you drive is fucking hideous.
Grand National all day long! Just a beautiful machine
Shit for having a little over 400 hp in the GN he gave the Hellcat a race. Old tech vs new tech.
Yeah...I'm loving mine!!
+Ed Mee pontiac made a trans am with a turbo motor back in the day, check it out.
+V6Power Through an automatic, that GN is somewhere around 500-530 crank horsepower. Slightly better than "a little over 400"
That being said, I thought the GN would be a little closer because of weight. That Hellcat pulled pretty hard through 2nd.
+Lane House like around 490
I don't know the driver or anything about that GN. I thought I read him say he had a little over 400 HP. I know with bolt-ons you can get close to 500 HP, which to me is a better option than modification. BYW, GN's only came with 4 speed automatics.
No surprise on the results but that GN is clean as hell. It's also pretty quick for the average street car. 425rwhp puts it in current v8 pony car territory which would be plenty for me.
425rwhp would shit on current pony cars
425 to the wheels puts it in ls3/c7 vette territory
Considering the Grand National is a 3.8 liter V6 and not a V8.
That's been my dream car since 87,I'm 45 now, i will have one before I'm 50
Surprisingly warm on it's trail for 30 years apart, the buick was a muscle and import slayer at stoplights back in those days.
Damn, the GNX sure lived to its name as the quickest car in the 1980s despite not having a V8. Even though it lost, it kept up with the Challenger Hellcat!
Wasn't a GnX
That Buick is just beautiful.
Such classic styling.
This was like Rocky Balboa vs Mason Dixon... The new kid won alright, but the old man took our hearts away...
Still, they're both fantastic machines of their times respectively. Great vid!
I still have insane respect for the grand national
those cars were made it very good quality any Gm bodies from the 80s had great engines super reliable
Before I watch this, l put my money on the Grand National, had one before, it was the fastest street performance car made in 86, 87, 88 T-Type,Grand National and GNX I will always love those cars!!!
Not to be against you but GN, GNX stopped production in 87. Your right they made the BEST why they ever stopped GBody I'll never know.
Thank you for correcting me;-)
89 Pontiac Indy Pace Car Turbo RW drive very quick and very rare.
Pay up
Aileen K. Douglas It’s been 30 years since the GN came and cars have evolved since then. There are 700 hp supercharged engines now so hold on putting your money down on the GN
Love how he said it was stock. Then changed to a stock block with just bolt on's. lol
“It’s just a six” got a whole new meaning the GN is a beast
Its crazy how similar they look especially at night. Id still have the GN all day long over the Hell Cat
The Grand Nationals hurt a lot of feelings for decades, even though it lost that was still impressive.
Love the GN still looks good today had a lot of nut for it's time
gave it a good run for the GN being 30 years old! love grand nationals!
back in 1995 or so, I heard a weird odd noise coming from a car, I quikly turned & looked it was a Black Gran National taking off & getting on it. Didn't sound like any car I head ever heard back then and looked really good & it was really fast & smooth. Kinda gave me goosebumps as I had only heard about them back then.
The most awesome part of the video is the kid at the end "I'm going to be on Utube"
That's priceless the kid wins!!!!
love the GN!

Robert Brumley what?
Agreed from 1982-1987 Buick Grand National, although the 1st only had 140hp.but after that they got the Turbo 231ci.V6SFI&85they got intercoolers&made 200 are so hp.&in 1987 GN'S made 547GNX with 245hp.I had 4friends back in the 80's their parents bought em Grand Nationals ,one was the 85&2were 86's&the last was the 87&his dad was a MD.&he drove his Ferrari Testarossa
Nothing to be that proud of. That Buick is a 6 cylinder don’t forget.
That GN sound is amazing
Lots of talk about HP. "Horsepower sells cars - torque wins races"... Happy New Year! Hope it's the best ever for everyone!!!
"I'm going to be on utube"
Legendary status achieved 👏
here's what I loved about this, the growl of the hellcat and the gentle whistle of the GN, music to the ear's

Love those Grand Nationals.
The GN is from my period and it was great! I never had one but i use to street race them all the time! Those were good times and I miss them!

Grand National was the monster in the 80’s. My Mustang GT stayed away
Same. GN had distinctive whistling sound (probably turbo) I learned to stay away from.
that GRAND NATIONAL was something in its day!
TBAGGZ1 H Grand National was HUGE in it's day! I remember as a teen you were somebody special if u had one. They were as popular back then as Hellcats are now.
Now its just your grandma's car.

GNs out ran every Mustang, Camaro, and Corvette back in the day. The Corvette division was pissed about it.
Still is
I had a Syclone back in the day. Stock for stock, I eat every GN and Mustang GT for lunch.
U could do THAT today as long as u could keep them out of ur air box.
Of course you did, stock...duh..but you wouldnt beat a 8 sec grand national though..even if you changed that syclone into drag racing machine
I had a 68 Dart Super stock
Those were badass along with Typhoon.
As the original owner of an 87 GN I'll have to say pretty good for a 1987 car!
The Dodge will be falling apart in five years!
serious question : why do you do say that ? they are that crappy ?
JAY OH no , not at all , the hell car is very well built with mostly metal and other strong items built on and into the car , he’s just a big fan of the other car I’m assuming
39 years from now, that GN will still be racing... long after that Hellcat has been recycled :)
@@gracien2008 Yeah, sure. Like every other Buick Regal is in the junk yard
The buick was a cheap POS. Doors sagged, broke the door mounts, the opera windows cracked up to the roof, the hood dented easily,
It was a POS. Bought one new. Transmission went out after a few thousand miles. It was the shit, though?
That Buick is BADASS!
Back in the day (that's how old people start conversations now), we had an old road out side of the airport in Sacramento, California, that was perfect for some good, old fashion street races. We had a starting line painted on the road and another line one quarter of a mile down the road. Since we did not have any electronic timers, we had a guy stand at the end line (off to the side) to ensure who the winner was. One day (actually the night) one of the guys brought a home grown Christmas tree light setup powered by an auto battery. Every once in a while the cops would show up. One of the coolest cops was a Highway patrolman who stopped by. He told us that since he was there we couldn't race anymore. However, then he started asking about the cars and just being a good, all-around human being. Of course, we were back out there the next night. Never had any wrecks of any kind.
Christopher Franklin great story man, thanks for sharing. If you are ever in Houston hit us up and we will take you to Mexico.
Not bad for a V6 !!!!!!!!!
Always loved the Buick GN’s. Respect . The best factory muscle from the 1980’s period
Video deserves way more likes. They got pulled over for our entertainment and got away with it 🔥
30 YRS NEWER, AND THATS ALL IT DID TO THE GN? MUST BE A DODGE THING.
GN is such a cool rig. Slower, yes, but makes up for it in cool points
Add the same type of modern electronic hoost, timing, and individual cylinder control. ...not to mention the freon chilled intercooler on that Buick 3.8 and watch how much power it picks up! The fact that this 32 year old V6 even started to show the Hellcat taillights is awesomeness within itself! And a testament to the legacy of the Grand National /GNX! It was a true wolf in sheep's clothing and the nastiest American car in its time.
And IMHO is waaaay better looking than the Challenger/Hellcat / Demon!
It just oozes testosterone, muscle and class!
I’ve literally, in all my life, never seen anything even keep pace with a Gran National let alone beat one.
U must live in a different world then i, a new camry could prob pull on one lol
442 cutlass, ss monte carlo, ss impala

My friend had an '87 GNX that ran in the low 12s without any mods or sticky tires. Quite impressive in those days---!!!
The GN always wins in my book, might of been a little different story if the GN actually hooked off the line. Cool vid though!
Facts, bro. I plan to own a gnx one day. Rare sleepers
Ray Jr how is a grand national a sleeper? Lol
Simply because whoever the individual was in the hell cat with the supercharged v8 which is factory possibly, may have underestimated the GNX. don't get me wrong the GNX a beast. Hope I didn't offend anyone.
The GNX lost, Hellcat driver didn't tromp on it so he did hook. Took a second to wind up that massive hemi and the rest is history.
I still rather have a Buick Grand National! Wait I do have one lol.
the Hellcat barely outran that car LOL
Lol 😂 yeah imagine if they went up the GNX hellcat would be embarrassed
No Doubt Dodge Challenger is a Lead Sled
It's a larger car. I can assure you that Gn or gnx will not hit 200mph with out ton of mods and money.
That looked like an 8th mile run, the turbo is on it's game there. Run 0-150 and count the car lengths. Likewise tweek the Buick up, remove the speed limiter and who knows. Depends on what you race, 1/4, top end, 0-150. Two nice cars
Yea for $70,000 you think the HellCat would of won with a way bigger distance than that !
In the 80s whatever car you had was fast... Until a Grand National pulled up.
30 years apart and that grand national kept up. That’s impressive especially because it’s a V6 Buick
I use to have a 1978 Buick Regal that was the start of the Grand National it had a 3.8 lieter turbo V6 from the factory. I took engine and tranny out and built a bad ass small block chevy 406 that had almost 600 HP. I whooped everyone around KC KS in that car and it had a 273 gear in the rear end and a dog leg! I left a little Porsche with a turbo and whale tale in the dust. Him and his girlfriend laughed at me when I put it in neutral and revved it a little. I showed him no mercy when the light turned green.
I love this comment. That boxer engine hopefully was boxing it's owner after that salty experience. Never let your ego underestimate 👌💯.
It's too bad you took out the buick v6. Those engines are where its at!
The ‘87 gave a worthy effort. Like they used to say, “there’s no replacement for displacement.”
Or bigger wheels. The Grand National had its stock 14’ wheels on it. The Grand National came out of the hole like the hellcat was tied to a stump and spun its tires a 1/4 way of the race. That’s the only reason why the hellcat caught & passed the Grand National. The hellcat only won by a single car length, if the Grand National doesn’t spin its tires like that it wins that race. The hellcat probably has at least 20’ wheels on it, it didn’t spin nothing like what the Grand National did !!!
@@bigbossman3987 plus the hellcat has an 8-speed. with a 5 speed it definitely would have gotten creamed.
Grand National: 2 more cylinders would have taken this.
Don’t think that was a stock GN! Great cars but stock wasn’t 400+hp.
Less wheel spin and the Grand National still wins !!!
I doubt either car is 100% stock, yet regardless you’re still talking about a 30 year old 3.8L V-6 with a small turbo on it versus a new technology 6.2L V-8.
Don’t get to caught up with supposed horsepower numbers. Winning a drag race isn’t about horsepower numbers or cubic inches, as sometimes it’s just simply about tire size. Case in point, the small engine car with less horsepower obviously wins this race with something bigger than 14” wheels on it.

@@bigbossman3987 And that is extremely impressive if you ask me. That old GN is still an amazing piece of machinery.
Grand National Might Not even Need 2 More Cylinders though.
Maybe Little Lower gearing in rear , Even More Head Porting and Polishing , Biggest Valves possible , the Right Cam and more intake Porting and Polishing Work , Biggest Throttle Body and Inlet tubing Possible, and a Bigger Turbo , and DEFINITELY a COMPLETE trans re- Build and Modifications,
Valve Body , Torque converter , Bands , or Maybe even Whole Stick Shift trans Conversion and swap. Any and ALL of these Mods Shld Definitely bring Grand National Front end right next to The Dodge's.
Maybe even PAST IT.
Inside a Quarter Mile race Anyways.
Still gotta respect the GN though. It was solidly the Hellcat of its day.
You have a car that's a modern version of one the most legendary muscle cars ever with a 700 hp supercharged Hemi under the hood in the video, but yet I can't keep my eyes off of that GN.
'87 Buick GN turbo V-6 cranking out just under 300 hp running against a 700+ hp Hellcat. Given the results of that race, the Hellcat driver should be a little embarrassed.....
My favorite part: "Cops WHERE hot that night." 😳😂
Yep they where all over the place. 🤪
JO yes ... that was the joke . Now get back to what you where doing before correcting me. 🤪🤪
JO my mother has passed . Not cool dude
JO I’m not sure why you are so mad . Now back to the video I like that grand national. Were did we go wrong ?
I mean damn! That Grand National stayed with the Hell Cat despite having 2 less cylinders and 28 years more age on it. I can't imagine how crazy fast that Grand National must've been in the 80s. It was probably the equivelant of a Dodge Demon now.
You're gay
Gran National : good son!
Hellcat: thank you sir!
I absolutely love the 87 Grand national. No shame brother, if that challenger was an RT or even a scat i believe you would had taken them.
My pops always says "there is no replacement for displacement"
Ya know that's still impressive the GN kept up with that hell cat as long as it did .
Personally I’d take the GN
