Oh Balestier! Alan, you know sometimes, watching your videos (esp. featuring the places I've been into) makes me all giddy with delight inside because it just brings back so many happy memories of my vacation there with my family (I did not know there was a wonderful park somewhere near Fragrance Balestier where we stayed a few years ago)! At the same time there's a bit of a heartache because I missed Singapore so much, and because it's impossible to travel for the meantime due to pandemic. As I've said before, Singapore will always have a special place in my heart, as it was the first overseas country me and my fam visited. I am so looking forward to visiting again with my family once the world heals and make happy memories again. In the meantime, I will just sit on the couch, walk with you and explore Singapore "virtually". Keep those videos coming! ❤❤❤ -much love from the Philippines.
Hi Anne. Glad to hear from you and thanks for sharing your thoughts =) I am glad to know the videos make you reminisce your days in Singapore. Hopefully when the time and opportunity comes, visit Singapore again =) In the meantime, stay safe and healthy
Alan, you will be delighted to know that Singapore is one of the cities that are saving the planet by BBC Earth, hosted by David Attenborough, very nice indeed! the title of the video is Cities that are saving the Planet. Have a nice weekend.
Thank you for making this, I appreciated it! :*). Back then, I used to stay at IBIS Novena everytime I go to Singapore. Seeing this, it sure brings back a lot of memories. I just cried. Once again, thank you so much.
Glad to know the video brought back fond memories of Singapore =) Hang in there. Just a bit more and we can all travel again. In the meantime, stay safe and healthy =D
The first time I went on business, I lived next to Zhongshan Park. I watched your video for a long time. I finally waited until you walked here. It reminded me of the joy at that time. Thank you.
Glad to hear from you Xin Yujen and thanks for the support =) I didn't plan to walk Balestier until my light bulbs spoil and need to make a trip here. Glad to know there are fond memories of this place for you. Its a very interesting area at night during pre-covid days 🤣
Many thanks dear Alan for your latest upload, the Balestier walkabout. Your evening walk was very relaxing as you strolled around and the sights and scenes were pleasant as usual. I noticed you have now mastered the settings of your Relive app. And here at 28:30 I noticed the appearance of the Blue Hour Skyline. Delightful indeed. All good Alan. A noteworthy walk! Well done mate. Stay well my good man 🇸🇬 🙂
Haha. There is one part of the Relive app I find irritating which is the goals portion. Wish I could remove it but hey, beggars can't be choosers 😂 at least the animated map makes life easier for me. Yeah balestier is one of those areas where the evening skyline is very pretty. Probably one of the plus points of living in a high rise in the area. Will also be trying something out for the next 2-3 videos as a short series. See how the response is like 😉
@ _Discovery Walking Tours TV Well Alan, you could ask your questions regarding the Goals feature at their support page at __support.relive.cc/kb/en/goals-33733.I__ understand that this feature was mainly targeted for the Globe Trotter and you may be able to delete or disable the Relive Goals feature. With you being a technophile Alan I am very interested in what you have planned in your next videos short series. Stay well!_
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Yes I did. You just start your walk focusing to Fragrance Hotel Balestier where is stayed for 9 night with my family in June 19 vacations ☺☺ loads of memories around this beautiful place. And you showed the neighborhood around balestier which was again new place for me ☺☺ by watching your videos I always get to see new places of Singapore ❤❤❤ Thanks and stay blessed 👍👍
@@kingofhearts110 Glad to know the videos provide additional information for you =) Balestier has that niche vibe which you rarely find in Singapore. I don't know how to explain. Its in a central part of Singapore yet has no direct MRT servicing the area, so I always felt the residents in the area are quite different from a typical HDB residential district.
Zhongshan Park is quite pretty both at night and at daytime. I really can't wait to vacation to Singapore. I'm always excited to see where we'll tour during the walks. I said this in a previous video..."I can create an entire vacation itinerary around your videos." A concierge planning for travelers/vacationers who just don't want to guess about what to visit and where to eat prior to arriving at Singapore. Maybe that's a great business idea for a global market that targets travelers/vacationers, but on a whole other level...just saying.
Haha. Thanks for the morale booster. Its nice to know that viewers are using this as an itinerary of sorts. I try my best to find the neighbourhoods once in a while so visitors will know there are many other places to visit other than Bugis or Chinatown =)
Thank you very much for your Balestier Neighbourhood Walk Alain. Baiklah! I watch your videos for some sense of normalcy and sanity in this world of the "New Normal".Be safe always!👍😁
Thanks Fandi. Glad to have walked here also. Always a nice place for an evening work. Went here so get some lights for the home so might as well film the area 😉
I lived in that building for many years you see at 0:33. It's the blocky building called Balestier Point. Used to have a McDonald's on the ground floor. And when we were kids (back in the 80s)... we ate McD for lunch every day... haha so unhealthy.
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Some of the units have very large open terraces BUT the design is quite bad, so water from some bathrooms can get onto some of the terraces. My family kept fighting with another family from the unit below us because of this. But now it's pretty run down... I went back to film (it's on my channel- just search Balestier Point) and it's very jialat. You can see the materials used to build the building is not so good.
@@AmbientWalking Think how good the materials are when the building started will also be run down over time. That said, the design of the condo also quite avant grade. Can imagine all the water seepage problems
@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV Yeah. We moved in when it TOP. Everything was smashing new then. Now if you go and visit... siao liao. Like slum siah. I think the idea of the open terraces, etc looks great but the fact is that it traps water and there's nothing you can do about it. Slowly everything will rot.
Can be considered "new". Don't know when it was completed but I only remember seeing it "recently". Perhaps someone who lives in the area can share more details =)
Been staying at balestier road for about 30 years now. Zhong san mall and dayz Hotel were build about 8 years ago... Cant actually remember what that area used to be tho. At 31:54 that building used to be Prawn World seafood restaurant (虾世界) in the late 80s. Used to study at Singapore Vocational Institute at the end of balestier road during that time.
@@tankenneth9915 Big thanks for sharing some local insights on Balestier. Didn't realise Zhongshan Mall was completed 8 years ago. I did my home renovation in 2020 and went to Balestier to get lights. That's when I noticed the mall.

Thanks for the feedback Tan. I choose to film at eye level so it's fairly obvious to passerbys that I'm filming thats why they choose to look away or stare. You can take a look at my geylang walking videos. Those I film alot more discreetly but the jerkiness is high, and level of the camera is at chest or below. So when you watch it, it feels odd (at least to me). You can compare and see the difference. I just decided to film at eye level to maintain immersion 👀

Can't tell you how much I miss the feel of the streets in Singapore. There isn't a boring street in sight. Everywhere there's a story to be told.
In another 100 years, this video will be gold, like those videos down the streets in the 1900s

Nearest is Novena MRT on the North South line
