Hi John. I totally agree with you here l.i often get asked about GPS units and mapping (MR volunteer) and recommend that they factor in the cost of mapping as a part of the overall buying of a GPS unit. BUT! I recommend they get the mapping equivalent of the paper maps they are used to: it leads to less confusion.....
Well said 😂 I don’t get in peoples cars saying your maps are better. Yes follow the arrow most of times. What I realised after buying 66i and satmap active 20, is I have to plan my trip well and that takes most time - finding route where I want/can go, what hikes are available. At the moment I like 66i more but I would want to use active 20 (discontinued now) a bit to see and compare. Thanks for sharing, will try to check out your free route planner.
hi john and happy new year. just wondering why you always use a route and not a track in basecamp. i have basecamp and i always plane my walks using track and not route, looking as to why a route would be better then a track, regards steve
Many thanks for your message and Happy New Year to you also - Route, track or course, which is best? This section on another of my videos I discuss the differences in each. I hope it helps - th-cam.com/video/r7syel8YqZ8/w-d-xo.html
Everything I put address in it say missed spell or can't be found he'll I know it there been there for years I put number in street and and towns and still nothing
Hi Gene, for full address searches Garmin City Navigator Maps are required, there has just been a recent software update to the Montana 700i & 750i units that come with City Navigator Maps to improve the address search function, NB the standard Montana 700 does not come with City Navigator Maps in the UK just the 700i & 750i versions, Kind regards GPST
Do you know if OS ever do a bigger discount on their mapping? I bought my GPS device not realising it only had basic mapping pre-installed and how expensive the better mapping cards are. Are OS are the only suppliers of these in the UK?
Sadly with the licence fee OS charge there is very little margin to discount. To keep the price down I would go for the 1:50k map option and this video will show you howe you can plan on 1:25k maps for free - th-cam.com/video/CpVoSqmYW_0/w-d-xo.html - i.e. plan on 1:25k maps and overlay the route on the 1:50k on your unit.

As the detail on the Garmin maps is poor and no OS Maps for Ireland available I've been using TalkyToaster, incredibly detailed. 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing

@@ukgpstraining Thanks for the advice, I will wait a while and see what I can afford in the spring.
