Whistling Straits is a course you play once to check off the list. Sand Valley is a place you return to year after year because it's BETTER golf for less money.

Speaking of the fairway widths. I still remember how much the PGA narrowed the fairways for the 2004 PGA. To this day they have never returned the fairways to their original width. The little bunker in the left rough of 6 use to be a centre-line bunker!

Replying to myself. Looking at the aerial on Bing maps recently I could see that they have returned a lot of fairways to their original widths. I guess because there are no professional events in the pipeline they can go back to thinking about the resort golfer again. I wish they would go back to have short grass around greens 2, 5 and 11. Not sure why they are surrounded by rough now.

I stinkin' love how you guys explain these courses. Played here once and it's one of the most penal courses I've ever stepped foot on...the ideal may have been Ballybunion but the parkland-style grass makes it play so slow that the dunes look almost cartoonish.

Thanks Garrett and Andy! Excellent drone shots revealing several key aspects of the course and some holes.

Wonderful analysis of Whistling Straits, and I really agree with most of what you said. What I really agree with is how you said it plays slow. That is VERY true, given how good the scoring was at PGA Championships previously held there. I think that if they wanted to, they could make that course play so tough that it would be unplayable. I’d be interesting to see how different it would play if it hosted a US Open and had some crazy weather that week.

I'm not much of a Dye fan but this course is fantastic. His one in French Lick is, too. Though looks kinda unfairly tough.

What do you mean by “the fairway widths are a joke”? Are you saying they’re too narrow?

Yes - they have narrowed significantly since the course opened due to major championships. The issue is they don’t widen them back out after the championships.

I love the analysis with the visuals. I agree with the assessment of the course. It's cool but not my favorite in Wisc. Great job!
