@@pinkydaalienqueen8322 google meet! You’ll send me video of form ahead of time, and then we’ll go over footage. If you’ve got a net or a field you can throw in we can also get some reps in!
@RobbieCDiscgolf I have personally struggled with form and distance for years and still do. I just muscle through to about 280 maybe 300. Just recently got into backhand due to this. I have recently tried to find "snap" instead of releasing consciously and losing all the power and spin.
The mechanics are the same or similar as all other beginner to throw videos (as they should be). The main difference is you were teaching Elizabeth instead of some really good player already throwing 400-500 ft and trying to eek out another 50. Most of us are just trying to have fun, not join the tour and need these baby steps. I just started this year and I felt like Elizabeth, now I'm throwing up to 300 feet and still learning. This is one of the best videos ever to help 'us' and Elizabeth, you are a ROCKSTAR!
I did this series of exercises just yesterday. I would put myself in Elizabeth’s skill and play level, but I’m 66 young. I threw all but 2 discs beyond my target ! Prior I was leaving every shot in front of the target 20-40 feet! I just watched it all again, and will now give her another go! Thanks for this tutorial soooo much! I also shared it with my sister in law! ClaudiaSJI
I think this is you're best video ever. It's real life. Don't get me wrong, we like seeing you play but we want to play better too. Gotta do a video on breaking bad habits.
I've probably seen 500 disc golf instructional videos over the last few years, and this is definitely in my top 5 all time!! Great job. This is a perspective we rarely see in instructional videos. Robbie: you have a keen eye to pick up on things and provide just enough guidance to get Elizabeth going in the right direction. And I applaud Elizabeth for her efforts here and sticking her neck out on camera for everyone. I can't wait to try something like this out with some of my friends who are trying to learn this sport. The "throw behind you" drill might indeed be one of the best drills for people starting out - maybe better than the one-legged throw as its more fun and it gets results too. Great to see that drill in action. Keep up the great work.
Man this was super helpful for me. Immediately after I ripped a putter further than I ever have before. Please make a video exactly like this for a beginner learning a forehand.
I love how you’re so patient and so efficient at explaining the mechanics of throwing one step at a time. Keep up the good work! Maybe someday many others can gain something from Mr TH-cam man!
My wife played for the 1st time yesterday.. She did pretty good for the 1st time... But with this video I can help her break down the shot from a beginners point... Thank you
I watched this video once did the reach back no look and I worked great much straighter for me and control flight. I kept practicing that moment and incorporated into my approach I throw it so much further and straight. Ps arm doesn’t hurt anymore after throws . Thanks Robbie for helping me improve my throwing now I can actually enjoy and have more fun .
Great job Elizabeth! It took me weeks when I started to get to throwing 200. I'm still plateauing at around 275 or so. Some of these drills (esp the "throw behind you" one) might be useful for me.
Love the excitement and I love how Robbie keeps it so positive. I think a lot of us get down and frustrated because we are trying to fix everything at once. Robbie broke it down and was so reassuring and explained that mistakes happen. What a great teacher/coach. Thanks for the inspiration and reminder that this is a journey. ❤❤❤
Great video Robbie. Your positivity and encouragement add 25-30 feet simply through the confidence you impose. And props to Elizabeth for allowing us to join her on this initial journey. Keep it up, both of you. You both are awesome.
I've been playing for about a month and I think this is the most helpful video I've watched so far! Gonna probably watch it a couple more times then take my discs out to a field and give it a try!
I’ve been coaching other sports for a decade and a half with that being said this is by far the best coaching video I’ve seen on throwing a disc I’ve ever seen Super simple and easy visual and verbal cues Great stuff Robbie
Great approach to teaching DG I like the way you are breaking it down into very manageable segments for a newbie. I am saving the video to help others.
I tried this the other day with great results. I’m throwing it farther with a lot less effort. Still trying to dial it in and my shoulder hurts a bit but I’m sure that’s from overdoing it as I always do. Thank you so much Robbie C and Elizabeth for a game changing lesson as far as I’m concerned.
Very easy lesson to follow and learn from. Been playing for almost a year and mainly learning on my own and watching some videos. I'm going to work on a few of the things you just taught I I already know that they will help me out. You really made it pretty simple to follow. Now I need to get to my local field and put in some work.
Really good stuff. I would love to get more distance with my back hand (when I need distance I Have to throw forehand). I used to be a golf pro and I appreciated the structure of your lesson. I saved this video and hope to work thru these drills soon, perhaps with my girlfriend who could benefit from more distance as well. We both just started playing this spring, and while I can max out my forehand at +/- 300ft, my backhand throws probably aren’t more than half of that.
This is fantastic! My wife had the same idea last week but we haven't gotten time to do it yet. I was going to do the same backwards drill with her! We'll video it and see if we can match these results! Tell Jason, Bunky and my wife challenge him and his wife to a doubles duel next time I'm down to see Josh! :D
I think the hard part for most beginners is just not really understanding what the correct throwing technique is supposed to look like in practice. This makes them a bit hesitant and unsure how to move their body to generate a powerful throw, so most people default to throwing the disk like a regular old frisbee. What helped me the most was watching top players throw over and over again in slow motion, making sure to note every movement they were purposely making. The disk throw is much more like a swinging a baseball bat than throwing a Frisbee. The power comes from the legs and hips and the arm is just carrying the momentum like a whip. I would go out and record myself throwing nearly every day and comparing my technique to theirs to see the difference in execution. I went from throwing about 180ft to over 400ft in about 3 months just from consistent practice and careful attention to improving my technique. With good technique, pretty much anyone should be able to throw at least 300ft.
In nearly every throwing discipline, they talk about starting in the X position. Shoulders are nearly perpendicular to the hips. You are 100% accurate that the power comes from the rotation/unwinding of the shoulders with relation to the hips.
I kinda came to use this form just before overthrow and yourself made videos on it and it did increase my distance. However, no pros throw this way. I would love for you to create some content on how to go from this to a more conventional form.
Robbie, amazing content last couple of videos. Just amazing. After your suggestion of thinking about the hand speed i gained 10m to my shot just by doing nothing. There is a hole on my home course of mando within 10 m of a basket (65 m to basket par 3) and it was a first time I parked and pared it. And this video gives so much insights on how to improve.. I love that you actually explain it to a person who can not throw it even 30m. PS: I bet you can't do your iconic intro with my real name) Hint: it may have been mentioned in one of your relatively recent videos.
I've been trying to learn backhand last few times I've played, was doing forearm but my elbow just can't handle it constantly. Keep watching videos slowly getting better at it (hardest part is constant release point). One thing I tried was angling the disk down and pulling through that way. Seems to level out better and not get nose up as often.
I'm a current student of Robbys, and let me tell you what one 1/2 hr lesson has given me a forehand. I can't wait to see what he can do for me in the future let's get 450' bud. (PS It is LEN from Canada) PPS I did a forehand only round and beat my backhand by 5 strokes.
Right off the bat I'm conflicted, because I will give you that she's probably the most important Collins but then I'm curious whether you would consider Jason or Pete the next most important? Asking for a friend :-)
Now that I watched the video... great job! I think this was a beautiful example that showcased both your heart and teaching skills and Elizabeth was a wonderful student... even if she has to put up with that Jason dude. ❤
I think I've been trying to go way too fast with the start of my pull through. Trying to think back to my most consistent shots I think those were when I really focused on order of things. Hips, elbow, rip. The bad ones were when I tried to 'power up' and mushed everything together and does up my hands at the same time a pulled my hips through
Seems like, for most people, learning a new sport progresses along a inverted logarithmic curve. It's fairly easy to get to 200ft but to get to 300ft becomes more difficult. Throwing beyond 300ft is, for most, impossible. It's very important, when starting, to learn the foundation mechanics.
@@billstrauss totally! So in theory we should never be actively opening our hand at any point during the drive. Based on our “power grip” when our arm hits that tip of the whip we are trying to create our hand won’t be able to hold onto the disc. If you can still hold on one of two things is happening, but they are both the same issue: your hand speed not matching your grip pressure. Throw the hand too fast with too loose of a grip, and you early release. Hold on too tight with too slow of a hand you get grip locks. We essentially want to find that sweet spot where we are practically grip locking the shot into the right direction!
