Marshall MG100, Orange CR120 & Marshall SIlver Jubilee Shootout - Which one do you prefer????

  • After listening back to the audio from this video I have to say that the Jubilee was my favourite for the clean tone but the MG did it for me on the Overdrive and full distortion sounds. Equally followed by the CR120s full distortion which was warm, full and like a big hug of Orangey gainey goodness.
    The Jubilees overdrive and distortion was nice but didn't quite have the tone I wanted.
    Let me know which one you preferred and why in the comment section below. : )

    I honestly believe your playing reached a new high, a new level, call it what you will. Its been a pleasure to hear you play, but this...this is new..more inspired than ever i believe. the more i hear you explain that at present things are a bit hard and complex, the more i feel that it shows in your playing. You're loved, you belong, and what you do makes us better. Thank you.

    I am kicking myself for selling my original '87 Silver Jubilee when I thought I was done playing forever. Now its 25 years later, I am picking it back up. I really want the Jube again, but what not many comments mention is price. The Orange is $450 today at Sweetwater. The Jube reissue is $2000. Its hard to hear a quadruple difference. Esp when I don't earn money for playing.

    First off that intro Jam was mind boggling stellar. Awesome! Now IMHO as you asked this , to my ears...lol... this is what I heard off an iPad....
    Clean was the Jubilee as it was darker and not as bright
    OD was the Jubilee as it was clear and well defined
    Distortion was the MG as it sounded authentic to the riff that was played like it belonged..

    For the clean sound I preferred the Marshall mg just very clear and still had a lovely resonance. Overdrive I preferred the Marshall mg again although it was close for me between that and the silver jubilee. I preferred the MG because it seems to have really nice deeper notes and lots of bite. With distortion I go with the MG again it seem to be a bit deeper in the bass strings with lots of resonance. Love your passion and playing Dave you are brilliant.

    Jubilee was the best overall, had the most natural dynamics and cut and power. The biggest surprise was how good you make the MG sound, it actually held its own against the jubilee and sounded better than the orange

  • @Jnday
    @Jnday 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, er, that was another reasonably adequate intro jam. Damn it Dave, that was totally inspired!! Not many guitarists could do what you just did. In fact I’m struggling to think of any. You were making sounds with one hand, eight and a bit minutes in, that most couldn’t do using both.

  • @MrNeurotix

    For cleans, I prefer the mg because it's the cleanest, the others still have a bit of break up. For crunch I'd go for the silver jubilee. As for distortion, it's a close call between the silver jubilee and the mg. The orange sounded a bit too dark for me. All in all it's just a matter of taste of course. Btw, always tought you were Buckethead. The bucket in the back confirms my suspection ;-) Nice playing!! thanks

  • @eminligata
    @eminligata 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Clean Jubilee Was best clean. MG was a bit boomy lower mids and lacked some definition. Orange was more balanced flatter EQ making it sound a bit thin/flat after the MG but more clarity. Jubilee had the full bodied lows and high definition with more punch which made it sound more alive with energy.
    Crunch MG was a bit muffled sounding, kind of like with the clean to me, Again Orange had more definition and was quite a contrast, more balanced EQ not as tiring. I'm afraid I liked the Jubilee again overall, More like the Orange with more punch and definition, more precise and cutting (It would really stand out in a live gig setting).
    High Gain the MG came forward more than before and started to shine while the Orange started to fall back and lose definition to me. Again the Jubilee stood out, it just has some energy and punch that the other two can't match.
    I think the MG and Orange between them cover most bases at home where the Jubilee might be a handful, I don't know if the volume levels were supposed to be roughly the same but overall the Jubilee really came out loud full bodied and articulate with a lot more clarity and detail. It probably costs 6-10x the others which is a stretch for most people to dig out your pockets. Especially if like me your mostly a hobby bedroom player. Really was in a class of it's own though.

    I think I am the only person who follows you who doesn't listen to or care too much for Frusciante...I just like your candor and skills. Its been one of my favorite channels on YT. All the amps were dialed in well, but I have to sway towards the Jubilee...thanks for posting them side by each Dave.

      @yargnad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To each his own. Whatever does it for you is the way you should always go. Frusciante is an amazing textural player and that doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone. I am totally in the textural camp and love Frusciante and Johnny Greenwood and those types of players.

    I'd say clean for Jubilee, and Overdrive and distortion for the CR120. The notes were still pretty clear on the CR120 while on the MG, some of them sort of turned into a muddy hiss if that makes sense.

    The jubilee had the best clarity or seperation in cords for me in all settings, low mid and treble.
    The Orange did well on the clean but both Marshall's were warmer and rounded to my ears.
    Overdriven the orange turned a bit muffled and mixed, where the marshalls stay more open sounding. Mg and jubilee are very close, could be wrong but the jubilee sounds more touch sensitive to my ears, which I like.

    MG CLEANS were a OVERWHELMING 1st place. Silver Jubilee dirty was a OVERWHELMING 1st. Wasn't even a close call for me. The orange always sounded like it was "cuppy". It sounded like a 1 x 10 combo - not a lot of separation in the frequencies.. The distorted harmonics in the Jubilee were so wonderful. The MG cleans were very full, lots of presence without being scooped.

    Man, that intro was beautiful. If that were the intro to a Chilli Peppers album, people would go crazy over it. Or at least I would! Nice playing man.

  • @Guitzz
    @Guitzz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me none sounds bad.
    Clean: I found that the 3 were equal +/-
    Overdrive: I would say that the orange had less bass or it sounded duller than the two marshalls.
    The Jubilee sounds a little better, but for the price is to ask if it's worth it in this register. Mays be in heavy tones the Jubilee can to express oneself better than the MG100 (?)
    But i also like the fact the Orange can have a gound sound at a low level.
    I have a question please i listened to other videos of people who have a MG100 for example and who play 4x12 and it does not sound at all as good as you. Do you play with a 4x12 cab or its 2x12 (or 1x12) ?
    Because you sound very good whatever the amp ...(and ofc you play very well too that can explain a lot)

    MG had the purest Cleans, they all sound nice, but the other 2 still sounded slightly overdriven, the Silver and Orange both had superb Crunches, Silver might have pipped it, MG, better Heavy Mental High Gain, Silver Ok, the Orange sounded muddy High Gain

  • @mikkis668
    @mikkis668 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting. I'm no sound expert, but these are my thoughts: Clean = Orange (MG warm and nice), O.D. and Dist. = Silver Jubilee. To me these sounded clear with a midrange emphasis that I liked. I play humbuckers (Gretsch + Vintage LP) through a Vox ac15, so that probably affects my taste.

  • @Nightingale1887

    I've got the Jubilee Reissue and it's pretty versatile. The EQ is pretty odd for a Marshall tonestack. Compared to my various DSL's, MA, Vintage Modern and a 1959SLP. I'm always impressed by your Crush tones and the MG series especially. I mean every guitarist i know had one at some point and sold it or traded it in for JCM900/2000 most of the time. Still you make it rock.

    I plugged my HD555 for that. Clean - MG wins for me, very nice, CR bit lifeless, JUB sounds like has more gain than others, almost breakup. Crunch - MG and CR nice, on pair, but Jubilee wins. Hi gain - CR sounds like broken, MG is bit fizzy - JUB wins for me. It seems like more gain and loudness - tubes still rule. I would set amps different, but it`s a matter of personal preference. Time to save for mini jubilee I guess :)

    The Jubilee is wide and clear in all cases sounds the best , the Marshall is still deep good sounding but not as much up front as the jubilee .Finally the orange 120 is narrow sharp and doesn't expand the sound as much as the others but maybe you could try another speaker with 120.

    They all sound great. Nothing out Marshalls a Marshall. The MG's circuit held the clean and the tube was already breaking up. Orange was never know for clean, but performed well.. The overdrive went to the tube Marshall because that's what they do. Orange was ok again. Now based on the song, Orange didn't do the distortion they are known for. I was expecting the Orange to destroy the Marshalls. The MG hit well, but the Jubilee just sounded muddy and louder on the distortion. Over all, I liked the MG, it worked on all three, the tube ran over everyone on the over driven, but needs pedals for anything else, Orange was respectable, but i know there is a better distortion sound possible from that Orange

    The Jubilee sounded best to me for the OD & distortion tones, mainly because it had a lot more presence. I think the Orange would have sounded pretty much as good as the Jubilee if you'd turned the treble up higher, it sounded a bit dull by comparison. Lovely tonality though.
    I thought the Jubilee's weakest tone was the clean one.

    i think the orange sounds the best marshall tend to make their low to midrange amps sound extremely muddy to please people who like powerchords etc. and if you like to add anything to your signal before it gets to the amp it gets 100 times worse. I bet amp for amp the orange would sound better than the other 2 with effects and have more headroom where the marshalls would get thin or tinny sounding. Just my experience. Theres an Australian guitarist on here Casey Jones who used orange before theey were super popular and you can hear how good they sound.

    Orange =Clean just a fuller sound without losing that top end sparkle.
    Crunch = jubilee just sounded moreish had more top end.
    OD marshall MG like the orange had a fuller sound.

    Clean = MG first, Silver Jubilee Second, CR120 third. Overdrive = Silver Jubilee first, MG second, CR120 third. Distorted = Silver Jubilee first, MG second, CR120 third. The surprise for me in this is how much better the MG is across the board than the CR120. Are the MG and CR120 using the same cabinet?
