Yeah, I've been reading the book now. Kubrick took like the very thin plot of the novel and threw everything else out.

@@VanSwagger did you like it? the shining is easily one of the best books I've ever read and honestly I hate how the movie ruined it

Awfully strange considering the kid that played Danny in the movie, Danny Lloyd(IRL), is a professor of biology at a community college in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Also the one on the right, Louise, is the one who became a microbiologist. Where exactly does she teach?

This really is a movie about procrastination.
It's scarier when you realize eventually he's the Joker from the first Batman movie.
I wonder how many people under age 30 realize that "Here's Johnny!" is a reference to Ed McMahon introducing Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show...
I do. I'm 17.
I've heard that quote many times. And just now watching the movie I realized, "Wait, his name's Jack. This must be some reference." And I'm under 30, and I'm not from the US, so thanks for clearing that up.
I do. I'm 22.

"The Overlook, an empty hotel on top of an Indian burial ground with a long history of murder. So like a nice Motel 6." 😄
How woke
The Overlook is actually based on an haunted hotel called The Stanley Hotel.
It was built on an ancient Indian burial ground, and has been the setting of witch burnings, Satantic rituals, and five John Denver Christmas Specials.
or a biger poltergeist house
"In the book is a loving family man."
I mean, I guess as much of a loving family man that an abusive drunk can be? Also, the dark history of the hotel is given to him during the job interview in the book as well. Just saying.
I'm not defending his actions, but in the book i feel like its better getting across that Jack was trying really hard to be better and had a ton of self loathing. That doesn't excuse anything, but I think book Jack struggled way more to control his anger and film Jack barely tried at all.
amarantine1323 and I’m pretty sure in the book he was sober, or at least trying to be sober until he learned more and more about the hotel
In the book he was absolutely not abusive- he loved both Wendy and especially Danny too. He was a recovering alcoholic that (until his last breath) tried to fight his demons...

@ 2:38 when the narrator takes on Jack Nicholson's voice, spectacular. You kinda have to really listen to hear this.
"A loving family man in the books" The books start by telling us Jack broke Danys arm in a fit of rage.

Me during the movie: ok nvm

Me during the movie: holy shit don't make those rapefaces
Me during the book: aw he could not kill his own son after all

I was thinking the same thing about that line.
But like, he felt sorry about that 😅
Yes, and it ends with Jack overcoming the dark power of the Overlook and redeeming himself for his past mistakes by sacrificing himself so his son and wife can escape.
He was battling alcoholism. That’s..... a major running theme of the book. He wasn’t just mad and decided to hurt his kid. He was DRUNK and grabbed his arm too hard. The whole Overlook job was supposed to be a fresh start for the family and his sobriety for goodness sake.

And yet it's drastically better than the version Steven King did starring Steven Webber.
And yet that is really a matter of opinion, not fact.
@@metro121482 so it goes in art, though the opinion that a cheapass miniseries produced by a good novelist with a poor track record in film and starring the dude from Wings comes anywhere close to the work one of cinema's great masters is fanciful, to put it mildly.
True, but the Novel by Stephen King is better than BOTH !

Stephan King called this movie a Cadillac with no engine, nice to look at it but goes nowhere.
Then he produced his own TV mini series of it, which has neither an engine nor the looks of a Cadillac.
DreamyWolf And he wrote a book that was better than both combined.
@@skywarp1470 Nobody here denies the greatness of the book.
@@DreamyWoIf The miniseries had an engine but it was housed inside the body of a Yugo and driven by someone who could never get the car out of first gear.
In my humble opinion, the miniseries could have been great if not for some casting choices (the ghosts came off super-cartoonish, Danny was basically cheeks, teeth and a stuffy nose, and Jack and Wendy had little chemistry), the locations dwarfed by Kubrick's movie giving the miniseries a "budget" feel (even though it was the actual hotel King used in his novel) and a director who is not an effective horror movie director (despite his past King filmography). The miniseries could have been cut down to Kubrick's running time and the story would have made an excellent movie. I still hope someone takes on this novel again for the big screen, notes what worked for the film and miniseries, and fashions the best version of the novel yet.
PS And a 20 year old Tony dangling from wires needs to go. If i remember correctly, Tony was always far enough away from Danny that he could never make out Tony's features. That beats a finger and a guy on wires in my book.
