I've come to realize I'm a power angler, so I've adopted the Matt Allen method to throw big, reel fast, and hunt those reaction bites. Winter is so tough, almost unbearable. Thanks for the great content GB!
adhd at its finest. lol. literally what u just typed. lol have no problem catching 3-5 in a 2 hour sessions. just slowing dragging a carolina rig. reactions bites in 40 degree water thats funny. how reactionary are you in 18 degrees in the snow? lol
@@mcbassinfaas7285yea some people are go do it. You are a sit back and wait on it type guy and that’s coo. But don’t think you gonna come on here talking that goof I got adhd and I’ll out fish you any day of the mf week fresh or salt
I caught my PB (13.1 lbs) in 49° water on Dec. 29th in Whiskey slough, flipping a large blk/blu jig, out of the moving current at the end of a deep tulley island. My second PB 12.65 lbs was caught in 50° water... also in Whiskey slough, pitching a large blk/blu jig on the edge of deeper water tulleys. Another option is to fish the warm water discharge at the PG&E power plant slough in Antioch... my PB there was 10.2 on a red craw rattletrap...
damn, giants! I feel like flipping a big jig this time of year is like throwing a big swimbait on the lakes. may skunk may not but if you get bit this time of year it could be a trophy fish. appreciate the tips!
It's reasonable to think that targeting abush points in delta tulleys would be a more focused presentation, since they're more confining than the expansive nature of lakes. These Delta lunkers typically dominate these current breaks as their natural habitat for foraging, regardless of season.. My 12.65 and 13.1 were caught within 50 feet of each other... one in early spring, the other early winter.@@GregBlanchardFishing
Hey GB I think the net setup , You set it between the new graphs @11:31 try to set it up there !! Just an idea !! Also on another note Rootbeer needs a motor I heard , a little secret fundraising to help Rootbeer out I miss those videos GB keep making great videos 🎣 tight lines 🤙🏽
It’s always good just to get out & this time of year you take what ya get the stocked trout in our lake so I set up for them for a bit. Haven’t been out & it’s been cold but I hear the bass fishing has picked up maybe it’s the flow into the lake not sure but it’s good news. Nice to see decent fish being caught in January.
Hi Greg, yes you are right about us New Yorkers having cabin fever. I am a school bus driver in Port Byron and I travel frequently along Cayuga lake and man I can not wait for spring time, tight lines
Winter time fishing is the best!!! No pleasure boaters no wishermen just real fishermen barring all the conditions to do what they love to do!!! Keep doing what you do GB love all the videos!!!
Here's a new years resolution for you Greg, net 100 fish on the right side of your kayak since you are very comfortable with your left side. This will insure you won't lose a fish on tournament day haha. Challenge
I love winter fishing regardless if it's for bass or trout, it's getting out of the house and enjoying the serenity and peace and quiet and beauty of your surroundings. It's good for the soul and it gets you away from the troubles in the world although for a few hours it's well worth it , catching something is a bonus.
That looked like a nice day weather wise for January. So you were out fishing nice day and you caught fish AWESOME. Hope you find somewhere for the net and thanks for the video.
I love fishing in the winter because even though the bite is tough, it’s rewarding when I do catch em. Any day out on the water is better than sitting at home! I also get to really dial in on specific techniques such as a jig, swim baits and other lures.
Same here. I've been trying out different trailer/jig combinations myself.... course, it's winter, so how do I tell what combos work? I'm just practicing my casting, I guess. LOVE your content Greg!
100% agree. always fun when there's a challenge and more rewarding when you get bit. that said, i dont like being challenged to many trips in a row lol
January isn't my cup of tea either. Years ago, our club had a tournament in December on Clear Lake - we were snowed on. January is known for deadsticking and extreme boredom. I appreciate you snagging that"stick fish." It made me feel better about all the debris I bring into the boat! Luckily you weren't skunked YAY! We're getting closer to the ISE and seeing you 😊 Thanks again for the Delta clinic.
Great video, Greg! Looks like you've broken through your fear of Winter fishing the Delta! Though Largemouth Bass is the ultimate species to catch, I think it would be great to see you explore catching other species more, like Striped Bass, Catfish (Clear Lake episode), and Crappie. You can still use artificials to catch those species, if not using live or frozen bait. Also, it would be cool if you can do a Seasonal Series (i.e. how to catch bass during the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall).
Well we know that any day there is little to no wind can be a very tough day ! That being said you came out like a champ and put a couple good fish in the yak ! The jerkbait made the day GB great job !
Here where I live it just now got cold enough this week that I don’t want to get out! Hoping this cold snap only lasts a few weeks because I’m itching to get the kayak out!
One tip that may help you catch fish on the delta in the winter.some friends of mine fish it. They swear in winter that a low, incoming tide with good current (present) and clean lively vegetation was crucial for having bait present and a good bite. Fishing lay downs, rocks etc. downsizing a jig to 3/8 oz, dead sticking it and moving very slowly, very lifelike. As you did in this video with a jerk bait, it also is deadly around wood! My personal preference when fishing CA in general, (usually Dixon lake way South of you in Escondido ) is to start in 10ft of water with a rattle trap, have a jerk bait as backup or possibly a bigger jerk bait that has some draw power and leaving it sit in that strike zone long as possible, moving deeper adjusting as needed. If all else fails, catch the ones cruising the bank looking for trout/panfish. Btw your tactic in this video seemed pretty good to make a bad day of fishing a good one! Happy fishing
The look on your face after every catch looked like you had hooked into a summer time top water 10 lber. 😆 I get it. Winter fishing goals are totally different.
Seems like a YakAttack double header toward the front of your left rail would work for your net. They've got some adjustability to get the angle where you want it.
Congrats on beating the January jinx. I always ran to dead-end sloughs (cleaner water) and slow-rolled a black/red spinnerbait right through the weeds and timber. Course, this was 30 years ago when we hewed our rods out of wood using crude stone tools. Things have probably changed.
Brother, some of my best winter time delta fish were in locations and conditions out of exactly what you said to avoid. I find delta bass love to find those rocks in current where their rock or hole is the only thing protected.
Greg, love your videos man. Tie yourself on a shadrap on 6-8 lb straight floro on spinning rod. One of the fish catchinest baits in those temp ranges. Light line allows for long casts and real slow retrieve. With all the rip rap there you might be pleasantly surprised bud. Laydowns are money too, just tickle the wood and make multiple casts. You can really finesse them thru wood without snaggin much other than lips. January might become one of your favorite months. Submerged weeds in 4-6 ft is another favorite place to tickle the shad rap thru. I like to crank it down slowly until contact with whatever you're fishing then stop and slowly sweep the bait with your rod, then real up slack as slowly sweep again. Lol. That's why I call it tickling. Hard to beat in probably the crawdad color on the delta. Same setup for jerkbait...nice and slow
Stoked you got some decent bites thanks for sharing. I'm in CA and it's been tough lately guess I need to try the jerk bait instead of throwing a huddleston for hours searching for that big bite...
When I’m fishing in the winter and it sucks and it’s cold bluebird sky usually I rely on my meter and fishfinders about 100% get a pretty good result from that.
Looks like you got your dashboard setup dialed in a little better. As an inshore angler I try to keep things simple on the deck. I wouldnt know what to do if I had two screens in front of me. Hard enough having my mirage drive pedals and lowrance in my way sometimes… makes me long for the days when it was just me sitting low in a Tarpon 140 catching redfish in a foot of water
I think you would really enjoy fishing saltwater bass down here in SoCal. We have a type of saltwater sand bass we fish here that react similar to freshwater bass. Tides are a big part of it.
I havent got my yak out in 5 months. Crab season got ahold of me an I can’t stand winter fishing. With that said. I think I’m going bass fishing tomorrow 😂😂
Greg. Up north when the plant life starts to die off , we look for places that produce more oxygen... Bass seem to hang around dead wood more and the rock piles.. The Frye Guy..
Sweet! Crazy I was popping and stopping a red frittside and got some bite but nun on the jerkbait now I'm getting a red jerkbait sounds like thas what they want!
Football jig. Slow roll an underpin or bounce a rock crawler 50 or 55 down some long rocky points. One of those 3 will always catch them this time of year. Js
I noticed when you were fishing with the jerkbait at the beginning of the video, it was a little difficult to tell how fast exactly you were working that bait but there was a few clips where you definitely were going way too fast for a winter bite. I count to 10 or 15 seconds between snaps of my rod when working a jerkbait in the winter. The one fish that bit came while you were distracted looking at your graphs, letting it sit. Just something to consider.
Hey, I noticed the handle on the NK300 throttle doesn't have that snaggy horizontal handle extension (like on the NK180)!! NICE!! think sawing off the top part would be worth it on my nk180?
Go past Lazy M and through your kayak in the forebay. Then go up to Bethany Resevoir. Take you yach down the Delta Mendota. -your welcome. P.S watch the duck migration. Go get some food and drink at the Wild Idol in Byron
Hey Greg I’m looking to add some electronics onto my kayak, could you go more in depth on why you chose two helix 9’s and the benefits of the mega live 360? Was looking at many different electronics in the helix series from 7 and above
mainly the mega 360. just remember its not live it just gives you a 360 image of whats around you and thats why i chose it. being able to pinpoint where a rock pile or the grass line is i felt suited my fishing style best and so far i've been more than happy with it. i've fished a few areas that i've had good success in the past and its amazing how much detail you can see with that 360
Just a thought. Do you keep a tide log? Be interested to see the tracking of the tides during your trips overthe months and years. Be a good reference for days with success and others that weren't as successful to look back on. That's how you can find patterns
What is that contraption in between your front seat into the back seat with the hitch receiver on it? Just curious if it’s something I could use. Always looking for better way to transport

For ur net u can try a YakAttack sidearm track mount with a rotogrip.

I love fish but I’m only doing it in the summer🙅🏾♂️🤣 It’s too cold up here in Syracuse, NY. I appreciate your videos🙏🏾Native Slayer gang💪🏾
Seems like a little deeper water would be the play. You need to throw the Jerkbait more in the colder water temps. That’s a cold water staple for me

I would think the yak attack paddle holder can be modified to hold your net in that position. Just my thought 🤷🏻♂️.
I just take a lot of time off during the winter
I usually sacrifice one of my rod holders to store my net.
Greg, livescope changed my winter fishing game. I'm not really sure what your waiting for :)

Dude.. throw that new micro flex on the delta and it’ll get hammered I bet

Can you please tell me where did you get your trailer? To transport your new Kayak. Thanks

Have you ever fished discovery bay? Really good area also part of the delta.

What is that contraption in between your front seat into the back seat with the hitch receiver on it? Just curious if it’s something I could use. Always looking for better way to transport
Portable trailer dolly
Just remember in winter do what you do but just do it a lot slower.
Yea at least you got the 🌞
Hey have you ever own a Hobie kayak I was thinking about buying one of them or buying the Jackson kayak what’s your opinion in both of them
What kind of kayak trailer is that? Price?
What is the name of your kayak trailer, if you don't mind me asking?
Geeg did you do away with the pivoting seat?
I always think to myself I wish my fingers could work like yours so I could one hand crank the reel
Should feeding at that temp
