  • Review of the Icade 60 in 1 Jamma PCB. Works ok except for issues with the sound on games such as gyruss, 1942 and gunsmoke.

@musicman282 - The sound is all done in software and comes out of the Intel XScale ARM CPU on the 60-in-1 board into a DAC. It then passes into an audio amp for using unamplified speakers through the JAMMA harness and on the side, the raw output from the DAC is sent into the 3.5mm jack on the board. Sound is much better from the 3.5mm jack using powered PC speakers than through the JAMMA harness using an unamplified speaker.

The 60-in-1 actually got a new PCB design a few months ago, and that's what I have: the newer smaller 60-in-1. Maybe that new revision fixes some of the games with distorted sound? Who knows? I'm happy with my 60-in-1 despite distorted sound in some games and downsampled audio in others.

    @Ace9921 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

On that note, Gyruss works in full Stereo if you use powered PC speakers rather than the JAMMA harness to output sound(it's the only game with Stereo sound on the 60-in-1).
One big complaint I have with the 60-in-1 is downsampled audio on games using FM Synthesis: 1943, 1943 Kai and Gunsmoke. 1943 sounds the worst of the 3; not only is it heavily downsampled, but also pretty badly distorted. 1943 Kai sounds okay and Gunsmoke is passable with minimal distortion.

I put this board into a cocktail cabinet years ago. 1943 is pretty messed up sound wise too i don't understand why it was so hard for them to get audio right.

@musicman282 - Crap. Oh well, gotta keep looking, then.
Now, I don't think this runs MAME, but rather either an emulator based off MAME or a mixture of emulation and reverse-engineered hardware. The CPU is a 200MHz Intel XScale ARM core, which I'm quite certain is too weak to run MAME adequately. The board also has sound inaccuracies that I haven't seen in any version of MAME. I believe this uses some emulation within the CPU, but also contains reverse-engineered hardware within the FPGA.

I don't know what was up with Gunsmoke your 60-in-1, but on mine, the sound is not that bad. It's nowhere near as messed up as on your old board. Even Gyruss is not as badly distorted. It's still distorted, but not to the point of making your ears bleed.
When you had your 60-in-1, did you ever think of plugging in PC speakers into the 3.5mm jack? This completely bypasses the on-board audio amp, which significantly reduces distortion(Gyruss was a mess on a cabinet the 60-in-1 was put in).

That board is notorious for distorted sound, but on your particular board, Gyruss sounds worse than on any other iCade board I've ever seen. I wonder if the sound amp is the problem. Once I get an iCade board, I'm gonna see if that's the case.
Say, if you still have the board, would you be able to demonstrate Arkanoid, 1942, 1943 and 1943 Kai running on the iCade? Those are my 4 favorites on the board.

A friend got one of these at his arcade, the sound emulation is off alittle bit but otherwise a solid gaming experience. I like playing gunsmoke, the sound is really loud and it over plays every other game...people will look over to see what im playing.

The thing I noticed about Donkey Kong on this board is that the walking sounds are off. The noise it makes when you walk should not be identical every time. There's a bit of variance to it on a real DK machine. This sounds like they sampled the noise once and it just replays over and over as you walk. I believe the same goes for the walking sound in DK Jr on this board.

I have this board in my DK cab. I turned off all other games so that I can boot straight into DK but I have an issue. My high score from a long while back of 87,900 is saved on there and whenever i score more (for example I just scored 111,200) the score disappears when I turn off the machine? Is this a bug / setting? Or has my DK (1) gone corrupt?
My previous score of 87k remains no matter how many times I turn off the cab but no higher score is saved.
    Would really appreciate any help.

The @musicman282 didn't do anything to the monitor.
The PCB he is talking about replicates original arcade games from the 70's and 80's. The design of all of these games was that the TV screen inside it was actually ALWAYS on its side, so the game board is taller than it is wide. But I guess I don't need to give you that primer, eh?
The monitor is just acting like the TV.

I have a B version, some games are fixed, like galaga is now 100% and no lag. But gryuss sound is crap still, 1942 sound is good. gun smoke is still crap sound. Scamble sounds are too loud. so didn't fix much, I HOPE THEY BRING A NEW ONE out soon with a few more games, and fix all this sound issues.. and some small Graphic glitches...

@musicman282 Is this the rev.A board or the rev.B board? I have heard that the "B" version has had the sound issues fixed and is actually considerably cheaper then older one....

i wish they would fix xevious its my fave :( good review. i thought about a mame i finally decided to go against it for the time being. the board is acceptable. i think the reason it doesnt play some things as well is because it would cost more and the price would need to be higher in order to add the programing /or chips to run the sound emulation properly.
Also i think that the board is fine. and I plan to find a way to incorperate a backup battery for the memory or something :)

I have one of these I bought at an auction, installed in a cocktail cabinet. It's always on free-play though, can't figure out how to switch it to credits/quarters mode cause I can't continue on 1942 when on free-play.

toggle with the blue dipswitch, turn machine off.. flip switch number 4 on, go through the menus with control, player 1 is save, there should be a option for free play on or off, when finished turn machine off then flip switch 4 to off

When I power down my 60-in-1 board down, the speaker output from the JAMMA PCB lets out a loud distortion for a second or two. Sounds like a transient somewhere in the circuit making its way to the speaker output. Did you experience this problem? If I use the 1/8th inch jack, there's no distortion, but it's a fixed volume (changing the volume in the settings mode does nothing). Thoughts?

Hi, could you show a closeup of how you wired the power supply into your icade? I have the same board and power supply but l'm not exactly sure how to hook it up.
It would be really helpful if you could share a pic or maybe a quick video of how you did it.

Gun.Smoke on the iCade is horrible, because it lacks a right fire button (you can only shoot left and straight ahead).

Brian Wilson the only plus side to it is that if the cabinet has a trackball, you can actually use the trackball as a joystick substitute.

6:48 Oh my Gosh! You should really have turned your volume down, Because you are burning out the rom's, Notice the Donkey Kong intro is very low pitched when it should not be, Also the how high can you get music is distorted, This problem also occurs with real donkey Kong cabinets as well , same goes for Is traditional versions of mame, Not sure how you did not notice this! Because when I got My arcade cocktail machine For christmas , The factory default setting for the volume was too loud, and it Was burning out the roms, So I had to have my father turn it down, Donkey Kong is a very Finnicky game! The death sound is also distorted as well, My local triple Crown Sports, Has an
original donkey Kong cabinet with the same problem. These issues actually cause a problem in the Cement factory level, The 2 gaps on each side of the screen that you should be able to jump over , You can't with these issues.

For all the hardcore Gyruss guys, why don't you just buy a Gyruss board.....f- all the BS. MAME is not much better compared this board. Nothing like the real thing baby!

unfortunately , theres only 1 company that makes the true icade. which actually plays 100% accurate. but there are 3-4 other factories that make this board poorly. what you got here looks like a ripoff. Visit the KLOV forums to find someone who sells the real deal.
