- The eclectus is considered to be one of the more difficult species to feed properly. They are particularly prone to some illnesses that result from inadequate diet.
The eclectus digestive system is different from that of other parrot species (its intestines are longer and it proventriculus is bigger), making it a more dynamic system with which to deliver nutrients AND fats. Because of this, the eclectus is prone to fatty tumors, obesity and fatty liver disease.
Another common affliction are strange neurological disorders called toe tapping and wing flipping where the feet clench and unclench and/or the wings drop from position and “flick” back into place involuntarily and rhythmically.
Both conditions are said to be a result of their remarkably efficient digestive system’s ability to cause excessive nutrient delivery. This makes appropriate diet an essential part of eclectus ownership.

This was an opportune video for me. I have not owned a parrot in the past, but I’ll raise and keep finches of several types. I am very interested in owning a parrot or two in the future, and Ekkies have been one of the most eye-catching parrots that I have learned about so far. So, story time. Long time watcher and this video by itself saved an eclectus; figured I should share with you.
I wasn't planning on adopting an Eclectus when I was looking a year ago but one of the places I went to meet a bird (that ended up not even being born yet) was a breeder, which I have some personal philosophies against. I ended up not going for the pair of caiques I was interested in because they were bred and I didn't want to support that, but upon arrival I came face to face with a male eclectus on top of a cage that was probably 20% of the size it should be. He did the famous Eclectus stare, sizing me up a bit. I could tell he was a baby due to a single little black speck on his beak.
After determining that the caiques weren't going to happen (I also didn't want to hand-feed a newborn as my first bird, as I know how much risk is involved) I asked what the Eclectus's situation was. He said he purchased (from where, I'm not sure) him in order to breed him with the female - at which point, I realized he was co-habiting the male and female together in that abysmally tiny cage - but that he wasn't "putting out" so to speak. No wonder, I thought - clearly he hasn't hit puberty yet (spoiler alert: he just finished puberty about a month ago and GOOD GOD do I never want to go through that again).
As if the signs weren't bad enough, the guy also bred rottweilers, and despite seeming very sweet tempered, they were loud, rambunctious and PACKED. It was a small auxilliary house for showcasing the birds (I know this because he also showed me his actual breeding room, which was horrific) packed with no less than 15 rottweilers, of various ages, constantly fighting and playing and barking.
So some background. I had been watching BirdTricks for almost *two years* at the time, first out of fascination but then out of necessity as I wanted to, eventually, adopt a bird of my own. I had seen a number of videos about eclectuses and found them gorgeous and sweet, so I decided to do even more research about them (not intending to adopt one, just out of curiosity). This video, and the way Mel explained eclectuses, paired with the other behavioral information I learned about, told me a number of things about this little guy's conditions:
- He was constantly stressed out, of course from the dogs but also, obviously, the female that wanted nothing to do with him.
- His feathers were plattered with black, some even with full bands of black spanning the entire feather.
- His food bowl, if you could even call it that, was filled to the brim with ONLY sunflower seeds.
- We later found out he had an improperly sized ring that caused some long term feather folicle damage to his right ankle.
To my horror, a dog spooked him, he did his *paint-strippingly loud* alarm scream, flew down the hallway and straight into the wall, falling flat to the floor. The breeder walked over to him, picked him up, and threw him into a room before slamming the door. I was speachless.
I asked him if, by chance, the Eclectus was for sale. He said yes, but since he was "defektiv" (German) he'd offer him at a lower price since he didn't want him anymore. I didn't really care about that, I just wanted to know if I could do something about it that I had the option to.
After he manhandled a few more birds in front of me (literally tossing a full-grown gold and blue macaw I've never met right onto my arm...) I thanked him and left, thinking I wouldn't return. I explained the whole ordeal to a neighbor who also has some birds, saying that I felt bad for the Eclectus and that I sincerely thought he'd die there if something wasn't done. I told her that I wasn't super interested in an eclectus due to them not being a "beginner bird", to which she told me that it didn't matter and that I'd find a way (knowing me well, personally).
I spent a few days re-re-researching eclectuses, pretty much mapping out exactly what life would be like. Food would not be a passive thing, finding a good vet here would be difficult (we're still dealing with this...), noise would be a concern (there are really not enough videos on TH-cam to describe how absolutely, utterly, horrifyingly LOUD eclectuses are), etc.
I decided, screw it. I wouldn't be able to live with myself thinking I stood by and did nothing (and I can confirm that would have been the case, as in the breeding room was an African Grey with a "perch" made out of literal mountains of its own poop and a cage the size of a moving box - I desperately wish I could do something about him too :/).
We ordered the literal largest cage we could find here in Germany (PLEASE open a store here, by the way - we're devoid of variety here), a plethora of soft-wood toys, and scoped out some markets to see where certain things could be found (like sprouts, which are apparently worth more than gold since they're so hard to find - we're probably going to start doing our own). It's not perfect, but at the moment it sufficed - and I kept reminding myself that just about _anything_ is better than his current situation.
I contacted the breeder, set up the buy, and that was that. We got there a few days later, signed some paperwork, endured some clearly xenophobic comments about how I'm not German (shocking, right?), and all of a sudden I have an eclectus in a taxi eating grapes through the carrier grate.
Getting him home was simple, opening the carrier was exhilerating, and he flew right to his cage and just sat and watched. We turned on some chill music and we just.... kind of ignored him for a little while. Every 20 or 30 minutes I'd offer some of the fruit we had purchased as a treat, which he ate as though he's never eaten before. By the end of that night (just a few hours later), he climbed down the side of his cage and stretched his neck out toward me. I went and stood right next to him and he climbed up on my shoulder for the first time. Words fail to describe this moment.
The next day, we realized he didn't have a name. The adoption papers didn't list one (weirdly, not required I guess). The breeder said something to the effect of "he's just a bird, why a name?" so I just assumed he didn't have one. We spent a good two or three days deciding on a name, coming up with terrible idea after terrible idea.
On the third day, in the middle of complete silence, we here a very teeny tiny *smooch* sound from his cage. My boyfriend at the time and myself whipped around to watch, as we figured he wouldn't make noise much due to being nervous or perhaps even traumatized. Shorly after, another smooch sound, followed by some clicks, followed by "Gib Kuessi" (give me a kiss), followed directly by (in English) "Are you my Lucky? Lucky.. luckyluckylucky."
He came with his own name, and while I know it was a coincidence that he said that phrase he'd learned without understanding it's his name, it was still the best idea we had to date and I wasn't about to rob him of his own name. So Lucky it was :)
We started with the Bird Tricks diet at first pretty strictly, but found that about half of the ingredients were nearly impossible to find outside of a few rare times in the year here. We eventually morphed the diet into "grab whatever is safe and is available", referencing eclectusparrots.net's Fruit and Veg chart frequently - always following Mel's golden rule of low fats and "always something red" (red bell peppers are a real hit).
A year later, Lucky is happy, his feathers are STUNNING if I do say so myself, and he talks non-stop. Puberty was insane, but aside from that it's just molts so far that have been grumpy times. Otherwise, he's so incredibly sweet, and even the one vet we found (unfortunately not too well-versed in Eclectus knowledge) said out of all the eclectuses they've had, Lucky was "a very kind bird, perhaps the kindest they've seen". I believe it, too.
Anyway, it was because I saw *this* video and got a very real and accurate view of what to expect (regardless of how difficult it's been), that I was able to make the informed and responsible decision to rescue this guy. I regret nothing and have had a very full year with him so far. So for that, thank you so much Mel and Jamieleigh.

Hey could you give me some tips on the diet you use please.. i rescused a male in the same kind of situationand i just cant seem to get a diet he will eat - (prone to pellets)
@@scguy681 Hey there, yeah the first while birds oftentimes do not eat as they get adjusted. Fruits such as blueberries and blackberries are good snacks and might help him get accustomed to more healthy foods, but should ultimately be fed in moderation. Seeds and fruits are prone to raising their hormones and will also cause high energy levels that they won't be able to burn off in captivity, causing stress and aggression. I recommend abstaining from seeds and instead going for almonds as treats. Walnuts are also a good alternative. Stay away from peanuts. Keep in mind all nuts have a high fat content and since eclectuses have elongated GI tracts they will absorb more fat, sugars and salts from food than other parrots - hence why their diet is really important in the first place.
I recommend getting off pellets as fast as possible. They are quite unhealthy for eclectuses, despite eclectuses being on the packaging a lot of the time. Seeds are a common hormone trigger, too, and can easily lead to liver issues due to high fat content. I just omit them from my guy's diet, despite him loving them both.
Also, be wary of vets that aren't familiar with eclectuses - it's common for them to be misdiagnosed as having calcium deficiencies and to be prescribed supplements. This is, from my research, rarely the case, especially if they have a good diet.
Their daily chop (food) should be mostly vegetables, a little rice, topped with sprouts, and just a smidge of fruit. Always have something red, like carrots or red bell peppers. If he doesn't like the hardness of carrots, a little carrot juice will suffice (make sure it doesn't have any additives like salt or sugar). Otherwise you can steam them. The red/orange vegetables have beta-keratin in them which is important for their bodies to regulate vitamin A production.
Broccoli and/or cauliflower are a must in their daily chop as that is going to be their main source of calcium. I also tend to put in radishes, mint leaf, several types of bell pepper, peas (my guy LOVES peas, just make sure they're fresh or frozen, never canned), and sometimes kidney beans if I can find them (sometimes hard where I live). That forms a good base. If you can find pomegranate kernels, put them in too. I usually top it off with a squeeze of a full lemon just to keep things nice and fresh.
For energy, a LITTLE BIT of hard-boiled egg each day is a good treat. Not too much though. It might seem weird to feed your bird eggs but most parrots are actually omnivores to some extent (namely the toucan, which will each other toucans) and will certainly enjoy some hard boiled egg if offered.
Further, switch up the chop from batch to batch. I usually do about 2 weeks worth, which makes about three bags total, and two get frozen and the last becomes the first bag of the batch. The next batch I try to mix things up, keeping the above as my "base" just to make sure he gets what he needs.

Remember that while all parrots are foragers, eclectuses are especially so. If he's not really interested in food, perhaps it's just not rewarding enough. Parrots working for their food is not abuse, it's fun! They enjoy it. Look up some ways to make eating interesting. Also, they're social eaters. Most likely if you're eating something that looks tasty, your guy will want to have a bite. Eat something they can share (strawberries make a great parrot date night food). Just don't share a piece you've already eaten as human saliva is rather toxic for parrots.

Thanks for posting this! I'm glad you mentioned the back of their throat because our vet said our Eclectus's was blunted, he was fed cat food the first 2 years of his life and he looked just like your red girl! But we rescued him and now he looks neon and shiny and isnt greasy!

I was so lucky to find this video today. I have a 5 year old male Eclectus and he seems healthy, but his feathers on the ends are turning black. I have had him to my avian several times and she says he hasn't lost weight and he seems healthy to her. I believe I need to change his diet after watching this video, because I believe the diet he is on is his issue. Thank you for the information and keep the videos coming about Eclectus!
My male went through the same thing, give lots of healthy fruits (like dragon fruit, horned melon, pomegranate) and dark leafy greens with bright red veggies like bell peppers. I recommend pellets but only a very small amount (gets TOPS or Harrisons lifetime, not high potency). Seed and nuts should only be a rare treat.
I took my eclectus to another avian vet. I had them do a complete blood analysis and x-rays, basically a complete checkup. The results showed he is anemic and is calcium defienct. I purchased calcium supplement and working on his diet. After several weeks, he seems to have more energy, but we will wait to see if his blood work improves in a month or so.
@@donnastarkey1032 That is great, good to know the exact thing that is causing it. I am still trying to find a good vet that knows Eclectus in my country, my male has been to many and they have no clue, I had to figure it out myself.
Update: I wanted to update everyone on Casper's progress. Casper is doing so much better since I started him on the calcium powder. He was doing good after I started him on the calcium powder, but the big difference began when I started feeding him the meal plan from the Birdtricks books. I started Casper on the winter spring mix and I can tell you he eats like he's starving to death, he loves this meal. He eats just likes the birds on the video. He dives in and devours the meal. He has never eaten this much food as he does now.
He still has the issue of plucking. I am working on his environment to make more entertaining activities for him, plus forgings ideas. Both Casper and I are well pleased and I would highly recommend the purchase of their book "The Natural Feeding System." It is worth it!

I love my Eclectus boy, Saint. He's a awesome parrot. He's actually from New Guinea, AruEclectus. He's bigger then the Solomon Island & Australia Eclectus. Yep, he loves carrots, butternut squash, sweet potato. Lots of beto carotene that converts to vitamin A. 80% veggies, legumes & sprouts are his favorite. 20% fruit, nut & seed. He's actually not a big fruit eater. Thank you for featuring the Eclectus species. They do well in a household that isn't chaotic, yelling, kids. They need a consistent schedule & at least 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Perfect for single or retired couples. Sorry, don't mean to discriminate, they really thrive in specific conditions & will pluck in others. I rescued him on Father's Day 2019. Got him changed over to a healthy diet & consistent schedule. Stay away from dyes, added salt & sugar. He gets all fresh foods foods. He won't eat pellets. Pistachios are his favorite treat.

The thing it, the pet food industry are not trustworthy. They are not watched, they are on s *honor* system & don't really have to list the truth because no one will check them anyway. Sprouts are the healthiest way mixed in with mixed veggies. We don't know what they are actually using in pellets. I prefer to know EVERYTHING he consumes & have control of everything he consumes. I know for a fact he only eats healthy foods. No pellets for my boy, I'm glad he won't eat them. I sprout once a week for him & I mix some sprouts in with his veggies. I put everything in a food processor then divide into zip lock freezee bags & freeze them. Much easier to manage instead of chopping every day.

Makes sure he gets legumes daily. I sprout his legumes, chickpeas, lentils, quinoa, mung bean. Be careful if you sprout, they must be rinsed with cool fresh water every couple hours. I soak in full water for 24 hrs, also draining & rinsing several time's. After 24hr, rinse well several time's, leave them on counter drained but still wet for 2 days. Rinsing! Then refrigerate. Use a mason jar with a screen to breathe. Bacteria can form quickly that's why rinsing is very important. I leave in my kitchen so I never forget.
Short tails on sprouts are the most nutritious, as the tails get longer, they lose nutritional value.

Remember, manmade Vitamins are not good to use. And, Eclectus parrot have a longer then usual digestive tract as to why they require legumes.

Our Eclectus is about 16 years old and for now never had problems with diet, he loves chicken, eggs, veggies, apples, cucumber, oatmeal, banana's, peppers like you said, no seeds, and he loves nuts like almonds, walnuts, and peanut butter but we limit those as they are high fat items. He is always feeding his GF, an old sports water bottle.

Love the feathers of the eclectus, it's more like hair and you can easily identify which sex. Also saw a documentary about them, and neither sex is monogamous even while nesting. Looked like there was all kinds of goodies in their food that I couldn't identify, so my question is can you find it here in the US. Thank you for sharing, and see you soon.

Im really interested in working/learning/adopting a bird, and I was hoping that you could make a diet series on eclectus parrots, and other birds as well. If I know anything at all about birds its that a good diet leads to a happy healthy bird/relationship!

My mother in law had a female Eclectus named Georgia. She is what prompted my love of parrots and my NEED to have a parrot companion. I got a Cockatiel 1st then 2yrs later for an African Grey.
Just saw my first Ekkie last weekend at a bird show. Wow what a beautiful bird. We are considering a third bird and now have to consider this one. But the sensitivity of the diet worries me. Need to do more studying on them. Tks for the video, but we need more details. So please more videos. Tks

Please make a video about Parrotlets!!! They're tiny, but still parrots. Also, I'm feeding her the right diet of veggies, pellets, grains, occasional fruit/seeds, but hard for her to actually EAT all the veggies instead of just picking at it and throwing it... Not sure how much she is actually eating of the veggies. I've tried presenting it all different ways, sizes, etc. I have one and have done extensive research, but it is hard to come by recent videos!
I’m a whole food vegan, so apart from avocado, my ekkie eats what I eat. It varies a lot, centers around who grains, pulses, root vegetables, greens, berries, and some nuts. He’s doing extremely well, his feathers are brilliant, nutritional deficiencies are not even possible (for either of us) eating this way.

So pleased to hear more about the Ekkies. I volunteer at a sanctuary here in SoCal which is predominantly Eclectus parrots. We have a female who experiences constant breeding cycles. She is very aggressive if women go near her “nests” or areas in the home that she has claimed as a nest. We are currently adding Red palm oil and raspberry leaf to her diet to see if that helps. So far it has helped her gain weight but she has recently gone back into another crazy breeding/nest possessive cycle, so I don’t think it’s working. She eats Soaked Zupreem pellets with the palm oil mixture on them, mixed veggies, beets, ginger, fruit (berries, kiwi, melon, stone fruit) She eats mostly seed, outside of the fruit veg and pellets. Do you have other recommendations for stopping the breeding cycles. She does occasionally lay an egg during her cycles.
Yes to more Ekkies. I have one I got from the Florida Parrot Rescue (he is my foster failure) but I don't have a clear cut way to feed him. I was also told to give him more fruit than my other birds. I was confused because I felt that meant he was getting more sugar as well! But I will check your feeding system and see if I can get him on the correct system as he came to me plucked and with his feathers in a horrible condition. I am hoping your system will help resolve at least some of his feathers!!!
Great video. Will look up your diet. I am mostly feeding mine the Oven Fresh Bites from Caitec as they are suppose to be complete and natural etc for Eckies. But, definitely more Eckie vids please! I have a 4 y/o male bought as a baby and he's had beautiful plumage for the 1.5 years and then started plucking after I moved him to his own room from a public area (living room) which impacted the time/attention he's been getting before. Can't get him to stop and everything I've been reading and hearing from people is that its a mental thing and once they start its really hard to impossible to get them to stop. They basically get addicted to it. There are times where he looks like a plucked chicken with no wing and tail feathers left... just the down feathers. Very sad looking.
The main cause of feather destruction in eclectus parrots is wing clipping. Birds try to fix those cut feathers which dig into their sides. While diet is important, keeping birds fully flighted makes a huge difference in terms of avoiding feather destructive behaviors.
I know this comment is old but, sadly my male eclectus flying feathers were clipped very young, now his flight feathers have grown back, is there any way to teach him to fly again ?
We love your videos and we love Mel. I live in Toronto, Canada and have a 3 year old female Ekkie. Got her only week ago! Semi tame, has been cage bound since hatched, we have her taking treats from our hands and using target training. She’s been out of her cage once first time yesterday. Came out on her own! Not territorial about the huge cage she’s in now. She appears very healthy, beautiful shiny feathers. Is eating a chopped diet I’ve made for her. Takes forever to eat it! Not crazy about the chopped up kale and zucchini that’s in it.Will chew on a raw carrot stick. I’ve got kidney and pinto beans and whole oats too in there.
I have put in the chop cooked sweet potato (maybe not enough for her liking). I will try to purchase your cook book but since she’s an Ekkie, maybe not all diet plans are right for her. Any advise is welcomed!

Great video. Eclectus actually don’t have a longer digestive tract. It’s such a common misconception. Eclectus do better on a fresh diet and it can be the very best way to keep them healthy. Coming from a vet that has done a lot of post-mortem examination they have exactly the same digestive tract with the exact same cell morphology. Really like your recommendations, but vitamin supplementing any parrot should be done with caution as it is likely to have the same result. All parrots do extremely well on the eclectus diet. Coana also become blunted with a seed or pellet only diet in any parrot. The main mechanism of examining eclectus parrot condition is the feather and the beak colouration (bright top and lighter bottom like a candy corn).
What can i feed my eclectus i bought the food that they sell for 70.00 is that food not enough?? When i got her she had a overgrown beak :(

YES FINALLY!! Now I can finally send this video to people when I say eclectus should never eat seed EVER. Heaps of people don’t believe me and think they’re fruitavores and I’m like NO. Some people just don’t give a crap and now I can be like WATCH THIS VIDEO, YOURE KILLING THIS BIRD.
Thank you so much for this. I just brought a 1 year old eckie home. The lady I got him off told me she was just feeding him pellets and never fed him fruit or veggies. I was extremely lucky as I put a bowl of veggies and fruit out for him and he loved it. His diet is now mainly veggies and fruit 3-4 times a week. I still feed him a small bowl of pellets in the evening so he can get some of his vitamins from it. He seems to really love green beans. I was wondering if I can give as much as he wants as it is a vegetable, or should I limit it?

Neal Post the seasonal feeding recipes are preferred for all the birds to be on as their main meals but the others are there to help add variety or entice the pickier eaters into trying more healthy foods.

Very helpful video! I've been wondering if your books made mention of different portions for eclectuses. Might have to buy it as a Christmas present to myself now. My ekkie baby is on a diet of around 90% chop, with pellets and seeds used as forager fillers and treats. I was told she was a Solomon island, but looking at the size difference between her and another Solomon I know, I suspect she may be a hybrid with a red sided. She's about 1/3 bigger than the other Solomon girl. Doesn't effect her care at all, but a fun thought.
I have a video here on my channel talking about portions. There's no one size fits all when it comes to portioning based on species because, like you said, they come in all different sub-species and sizes!

I am planning on getting two eclectus parrots someday (since its illegal to have only 1 in my country). I have the feeding system from birdtricks and it says that it's recommended to only feed the chop once a day. So, what do I feed the second time?
Edit: It also says you should add pasta... like, noodles? English is not my first language, so pasta came a bit weird... like, the noodles we eat too just mashed and into the mix...?
