This was a brilliant solution! Thanks for sharing the idea. I hated the thought of throwing this appliance away over two little plastic parts. I found a fuel hose that was 1/4" inner diameter and 1/2" outer diameter and it fits perfectly into the opening. It is a tight fit, so I used the old trick of wetting the hose with water, and that helped get it snugly into the hinge opening. The top swings open smoothly and with just the right amount of resistance. It is snug enough that I am going to try it without the bolts. I encourage anyone else having this problem to use this solution and avoid sending one more item to the landfill unnecessarily.
