    Thank you so much for everyone who had a part in this brilliant film. Wonderful script, beautiful and clever (in a good way) graphics, lovely music, incredibly informative, humane, and just plain perfect. I learned more in five minutes about gypsies/Roma/travellers than in the whole rest of my life. It should be required viewing in schools, youth organisations, and perhaps Parliament. Wonderful!

    My Dad's family were Roma but my Grandmother inherited a farm in Wales. They opened a chip shop in Brynawel near the pit. My Grandad was killed in that pit but I always remember the 3 horseshoe trivet my Nan kept in her fire grate from her travelling days.

    Thanks for educating us. My sense is the irish travellers were the remnants of the gaelic old order, and deserve great respect for never submitting to english law

    You should of added the full repetoire of our skill sets. We are not all tree surgeons and ground worker's. Many of us are artists, entertainers, diplomats.

    This is interesting to me, at the beginning of the video and in the thumbnail the patten is clearly from an ornament maker called Royal Crown and Darby. It's been collected by all three groups for years, along with Royal Worcester, Royal Dolton and Waterford Crystal

    Ethically speaking, there is no reason why a nomadic lifestyle should not be possible even today. Surely, society at large could make things easier for those communities who wish to continue that lifestyle. Tradition is not bad unless it becomes a conservative form of traditionalism. And that is a problem for all communities, not just the nomadic ones. :)

    Yeah, we still get discriminated against until this day. I won’t stand for it. The word “pikey” really rattles me.

    • @AntaresBottia
      @AntaresBottia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why? As a born and bred traveller myself, Pikey was in reference to non-gypsies. Shows you their ignorance.

    • @moonbug7252
      @moonbug7252 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntaresBottia aren't non-gypsies called gorjas? and even if pikey was used for non-gypsies, its taken on new meaning and it's now used against us.

    • @AntaresBottia
      @AntaresBottia 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moonbug7252 Gorjas, yes are non-Gypsies. A pikey is a non-traveller also but the reason they get called pikey is because they are trying to imitate traditional Romany Gypsy, they are new age travellers which I remember the term back in the 80s.

    • @moonbug7252
      @moonbug7252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AntaresBottia I understand but non-gypsies use that term for any gypsy, it's become removed from its original meaning. The gypsy side of my family have been that way for decades, way before the eighties (that's the most I know now, need to get family records for their side sometime) but people will still call my family members pikeys.
      Thanks for teaching me the origin I never knew.

    • @AntaresBottia
      @AntaresBottia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@moonbug7252 Yes, unfortunately non-Gypsies still make reference to Gypsies. Their ignorance doesnt allow them to comprehend it.
      I only reference the 80s due to the influx of the new age travellers who desired our way of life. It was because of them Thatcher brought out the red tape, though can't blame others for wanting to experience freedom like we had.
      Thank you also, nice speaking with you.

  • @fighting3209
    @fighting3209 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    this is how it is folks. gypsys are Asian in origin. not western European. gypsys and travellers aren't the same people. the gypsys came from the Roma, and the travellers were from Scotland and Ireland originally. the gypsy language is very similar to Indian.

    I’m conflicted with video. It is beautifully done. There are a few generalisations I’m not a fan of-which is the problem with generalisations. I would like to see a more critical approach and acknowledgement of the dark sides. Not to say there aren’t dark sides to all groups, there are 100%. But hiding behind ancient culture is never a justification, especially with issues like abuse.

    I would like to understand these cultures more.
    it's a shame there is such a solid divide between our societies.
    it seems some differences in values between our societies are not spoken about enough.
    for example, once I saw a young boy go up to a busking band in a busy pedestrian street
    and he took a handful of coins out of their donations guitar case and walked back towards his mother,
    who stood by and did nothing to prevent the boy taking the money nor to return it,
    mother and boy then walked away quickly while one spectator shouted for the boy to return the money
    and that the mother should be ashamed of herself.
    can the behaviour of this boy + his mother be jusitified / understood / condoned ?
    can travellers understand that such behaviour causes offence and resentment by settled society ?

      Pear fishing was big in my indigenous highland traveller family. My uncle died in the 1970s while pearl fishing so yeah it was a pretty common practice for scottish highland travellers.
