    I love these non-whisky reviews and have missed not seeing them for a long time. If not for your other non-whisky reviews, I might never have discovered mezcal and armagnac and I'm sure I never would have found sotol. And now I'll be on the hunt to try some quality grappa. Thanks once again for expanding my spiritual horizons!

    I was a Whisky fan during my pipe smoking times, but after quiting smoking, I went to Grappa and never looked back. I am austrian, so the Grappa from our neighbors was always known here, but always a little underrated. After diving into Grappa, in my mind, it holds up with all the other destilliated drinks in the world, it just looks as a little unknown taste. I see a bright future for Grappa and even think to store some stuff, because prices already going up. My tip is.........no I don´t tell you :-)
    i go to italy every year for buying grappa, what an excuse to visit our favorite neighbors.

    I love your reviews Ralfy! If it isn't too much trouble, it would be very helpful if you could make a habit of typing the names of the spirits that you review in the video description. It is often impossible to hear them or read the labels on the bottles. I'd like to try these, but first, I need to know what they are! Just a suggestion ... and thanks again for all your informative and entertaining reviews!

    Terrific review Ralfy! The small town I live in had Italian's who made their own wine and grappa. They were stone cutters and made a beautiful Catholic Church too. Sadly, that generation has died off and few continue to make those wonderful spirits. I was fortunate a few years ago to pick up a gallon of Furno's red table wine, the best I've ever tasted, so I have an idea what you are talking about. It's enough to make me want to go to Italy!     I love grappa. I first tried one after watching this very review. It was Ducale Grappa Stravecchia, which is aged in oak barrels for at least 18 months.
    Now, it's no Nardini, Nonino, Poli, Mozzetti D'altavilla, or even a Gobetti, but even that lower end grappa that I've tried is leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of distilled spirits. I don't understand why people think that grappa is a sub-par drink, but it is quite spectacular, and dare-I-say, better than most brandies.

    There's nothing better than homemade grappa imo. Far more character and flavor than store-bought grappa. A nice touch is to soak sweet yellow raisons in the grappa for about a year. Eating the grappa-soaked raisons with the grappa is absolutely amazing! Also try pouring some grappa in your espresso.

    I discovered the joy of grappa because of whisky! While in Japan, I had the wonderful chance to have the lovely grappa cask finished 14yo Hanyu from Bar K6 of Kyoto, also released by Nonjatta under their "Ghost" series..The bartender gave me the exact grappa ( Berta Acquae Vitae Grappa I believe) in which the cask of the whisky came from. An astounding learning experience.Ever since then, I've had a great respect for the spirit. And had a chance to get some Berta in America. So this video brings a smile to my face. As always, it's about the experience, and the intrinsic value of the spirit. Thanks for sharing your experience as well!

    Tried an oak-aged grappa a few weeks ago while out for dinner at an Italian restaurant in Glasgow. Not sure of the producer but it was wonderful stuff. Rounded and creamy, I ordered another. Will ask next time.

    Yep some of the home-made stuff is beautiful ....had some at a farmhouse near Pula , Croatia just across the water from Venice ...so Italian/Roman influence....also their indigenous Slivovitz fresh out of the wood ( cask strength )... is a dream !....have you done a review of Irish potin (poteen ) ...home-made under the counter stuff ...not bad !!...great reviews Ralfy ..keep up the good work Sir !

    Excellent review. I am currently enjoying a hand made grappa produced in extremely limited quantities in an undisclosed location in the south eastern portion of a northwestern state in the US of A by a New York born Italian.
    I have never tasted a finer libation. The copper still was hand made in Portugal. The quantity of product that goes in is approximately 7 US gallons. The quantity of grappa is approximately 2 1-2 US gallons. 57 % Alc. but very lilttle hint of alc. All flavor and very complex and smooth. My new favorite along with small batch aqua vit.

    Love your stuff Ralfy. Keep it up!!!! Trying to get my hands on Old Rip Van Winkle, cannot get it in Oklahoma. But in Texas there are some liquor stores that carry it but only seasonal and I have my doubts about ever getting to try some.

    From Uruguay, South America, about fifty years ago, I used to drink 40% vol. grappa distilled in this Country. Without competition, it was a monopoly product. Grappa was, and is generally misregarded as an inferior distilled drink notwithstanding, I'd prefer it to a whisky! Italian grappas are the real aquavitæ, nor vodka, not gin, in my very modest opinion. Since grapes could be considered more noble than cereals... I liked you reviewing this kind of beverage! For your nose review, I must say you are drinking a magnificent "old school still" grappa that I never would be able to drink! Anyway I'm going to sip some young whisky Ballantine's now!

    Ralfy, what a fantastic review! Your passion was at its peak! Yes, Grappa is a fine spirit indeed. It's a traditional drink after a large (Italian or otherwise) dinner in my home. Of course, I also enjoy it at other times. Over here in the states, a lot of people refer to Grappa as "Rocket fuel", Oh God! Yes, I am Italian, 2nd generation and I travel to Italy at least once a year on business. I would love to learn where you scored these beauties. I stay in Milan, do you have a contact you can steer me to? Again, I cannot tell you what a wonderful accident it was that got me to your site, I love it!

    hey ralfy, bought me a bottle of the nardini stuff and learned that this is actually no grappa but aquavite, which is not made from the pulps but directly from the grapes (if the lady who sold me the botlle was right). brilliant stuff anyway

    Thank you Ralfie for shining a light upon grappa. I too distill it and know that outside of Italy people too often think of it as a lower quality spirit, which most definitely isn't. So thanks for that and also for mentioning Carlo. I didn't know him before, and now that I do, I can't wait to visit his distillery. I am so fortunate to live 2 hours drive away from him :)

      @@diveo well, I got 3 bottles. The muscat ones are sublime, especially the hamburg muscat. The big difference though is, that they are not technically grappa, since they are distilled from whole grapes (like for pisco) instead of the leftover dry grapes which are usually used. He makes traditional grappa too, although with other grape varietals. IMO using whole grapes, especially those of aromatic varietals, give a much better spirit. Definitely worth the visit!

    I have fond adolescent memories of harvesting Isabella grapes in the northern foothills of the Caucasus, pressing them to make wine and my father and uncle fermenting the pomace and distilling it into a homemade spirit on a borrowed makeshift stovetop still. We had no idea that what we were making was called grappa, we didn’t have oak casks and the idea of maturation was alien to us. Spirits are drunk before they have a chance to mature in that part of the world. My grandfather brought a little bottle of an oak extract that was added to the spirit to make it taste like cognac, or so we thought. It was a fiery beast that still smelled like the grapes it came from.

    I just got my first grappa bottle from my father yesterday, he went to Italy last week.
    And i totally agree with you, the sheer amount of aroma's is phenomenal.

    Just a small correction if I may. The Moscato d' Amburgo (black muscat) 'grappa' you sampled is really a whole grape and not pomace distillation. It is what the Italians call acquevito di uva (grape) rather than acquevito di vinaccia (pomace). The word 'grappa' traditionally refers to vinaccia distillates rather than grape distillates although this distinction has been blurred in modern times.

    Oh mention of becherovka is surprising I almost always have bottle of it. It's just good strikes great balance amongst herbal bitters by being bitter-sweet but not too sweet (i'm looking at you jager) with orange zest twist and very christmasy herbs. Good Stuff.

    It's nice to see you to passionate about another type of alcohol... I love whisky now and mainly due to your channel but it is expensive so have it less than I like. Instead I love trying strong, craft beers. I know you have done a beer with whisky video, but have you thought about doing a review on some craft beers? Waitrose have a great selection on offer at the moment

    Recently found some places in Stellenbosch South Africa making some quality Grappa (Husk spirit). We don't seem to get the imported stuff. Good stuff. Cask aged grappa has some really good flavour complexity, dare I say more than some pretty expensive single malts!

    Hey Ralphie! Big fan of your channel here in California! I was just in San Francisco a few weeks ago. If you're ever in town (after the land speed record try maybe?) you may want to check out the bar in the Hotel Intercontinental. It's in a restaurant called Luce. They specialize in grappa and carry Nardini. I had a glass of the Bianca and it was great. They had the Reserva as well, and I want to get back up there to check it out too. The have two or three dozen grappas to sample. Any other off-the-cuff recommendations on grappa? After the Nardini this is my new favorite stuff. Thanks!

    I find Grappa to be a simple, yet very tasty spirit.
    I happen to have a Tunisian Eau de vie which is distilled from figs. I find it astounding how similar it tastes to grappa. Just a little bit more bitter, but one could easily mistake the one for the other

    grappa is some very good stuff and like Ralfy does I too highly encourage all whisky drinkers to expand their taste and try other spirits...Mezcals can be absolutely amazing, the way they roast and combine multiple agave plants can be just gorgeous and try some good Brandy's and Cognac's....by trying other spirits it will open your taste and smell to knew things in the whisky's....there are many whisky's ive tasted that remind me of brandy's and cognacs

    Quite amazing how far Grappa has come...it started as the poor mans moonshine so to say (that is an understatement)...ive heard stories of people begging and stealing crates of old grape mash to bring home and concoct homemade grappa.....it started as the worst of liquor in italy and has nowdays become quite an art and quite sophisticated in Italy...although not really known around the world like whisky is, it is deffinently worth checking out

    Hi Ralfy, following a recent and thoroughly enjoyable grappa tasting session with a good friend of mine at a restaurant in Aberdeen I had to revisit your past vlog on grappa to remind myself the name of the italian producer you held so high. Carlo Gobetti!!! Any idea where i can purchase his grappa from? I cant seem to find any retailers in the UK who sell his products.

    I had a classmate in university who introduced me to his own homemade grappas. I didn't know then how to appreciate spirits and only remember that it burned my eyes (I liked them both a lot, anyway).
    Not malt, but, there's a rye I'm eyeing called Centennial 10 yr and it doesn't look like a typical Canadian whisky to me. I'd love to know your thoughts if you had the time to grab a bottle.

    Awesome review! Only one small point: must is not so much the leftovers of wine production but the fresh pressed juice including the the skins and stuff. Essentially it is just the first step in winemaking. I think the solids are called pomace or something like that. What I am completely ignorant of though is which part or parts is used for grappa, being a total noob to it.

    Very interesting. Its amaxing to me the different spirits produced by different areas and peoples. Why limit yourself in your education of alcohol. Although I'm a Whisky enthusiast, I have also been dabbling in pure agave tequilas recently. Its a bit like school, if you spend all your time on history than you will be less familiar with science, which leads to an un-balanced education. Because of this video i will have to try Grappa if I ever make it to Italy, and I will search out the lesser known distillers. Thanks Ralfy!

    Not sure if you've done a tequila review, will check. Some are definitely eye opening and rank as world class spirit..

    I have now tasted Nonino Riserva, and for the relatively young age of a couple or so years Im very impressed. I now have a Grappa for avec after italian food and vine. I will surely try to get the Nardini Riserva and 15 year old also. Its very different than the cognac and whisky. I can taste the pulps and the pins and skins, and sweet play doh and, liqurise, and natural sweetness. After a look on the bottles Im glad I didnt go for the dark brown Villa Isa Grappa.
    Nonino is a bit famous, and maybe advertised I dont know. Theyre on the TH-cam anyway and they also run a family run company for generations.
    As its is my first grappa, I wanted something with quality but not too expensive, and after a bit research that was just what I got

    I started watching your videos over the last month, and I really like them. I tried grappa while I was in Vienna with a friend from Italy. This is great stuff. I'm going to be in Scotland in about 8 months on a group trip. I know I'll be in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Do you have any suggestions of whiskey to try or any other liquors. I like almost everything, but I prefer whisky and gin.

      I used to try a few whisky drams at "The Bow Bar" (Victoria street.. + bars on the Rose street) during my last visit in Edinburgh. chers mate.

    Italian here, if you look for a good starter grappa not expensive you should try Gaffo or diciotto lune (18 lune).

    Why nobody's doing more grappa rewies?BTW! I'm drinking a grappa in this moment: Grappa prosecco 1yo barrique by Beniamino Maschio...cheap here in Italy (less than 10€) but it's so good!!

    Ralfy have you ever tried Ratafia?
    A mate of mine has a house in Burgundy and he always brings back boxes of the stuff and it's realy good. It's a fortified wine, but it's fortified with marc, so similar to grappa. This Ratafia de Bourgogne is Burgundy wine fortified with Marc de Bourgogne. Excellent stuff.

    The only Nardini I can find here in Sweden is Nardini Riserva 50% its about 5 years is this a good buy?

    The Best Grappas I have had came out in the Italian Restaurants in Melbourne at the end of a good meal. Fairly normal for the owner of the place to do the rounds with a bottle and a stack of glasses as a thanks. Also had it from a Coke Bottle in sub zero temperatures in black coffee never with milk as it curdles ;)

    Ralfy..... Found a bottle of grappa... Bought it.... Tried it.
    But I have to tell you my friend, it was not my cup of tea. Usually I believe that we have similar pallets, at least according to your whiskey reviews, but on grappa we differ.

    One way to enjoy grappa is added to a shot of espresso. It becomes a caffè corretto.

    Ralfy do u kno the story of LINIE Aquavit?
    Its aged @ sea, crosin the Equator twice over 4months n Sherry casks n ordr 2 attract sum salty temp fluctuations as it makes its way back 2 its home n the great white North! intristin stuf 2 say th least.
    Hav u ever tried th Linie Aquavit??
