My Dad (RIP) and his wife bought an Airstream trailer and drove all over the US for a few years before settling down in Florida. I visited them a few times, and it seems like a fun adventure. Glad that you got to experience your own version of that in gorgeous Ireland. Hope all is well with you, Millie, and Alex. Sláinte! ~Be Blessed
Yeah there are some pros and cons when your doing the van life it's a little bit easier in the US I would say. Thanks for all the behind-the-scenes from your videos on your holiday
Good for you, doing something out of your comfort zone. Love the Irish country side, looks very peaceful and clean and GREEN... Very very green 😂. Love your videos keep it up 🎉🎉🎉
Beannachtaí, Taisteal Leprachaun Congratulations Little Explorer. For your first solo camper life journey, you were Grand and daring. I am proud for you!! Also have a 2-3 places in mind to park overnight. Here in US, we have state / federal marked rest stops on the side of highways. There are also truck stops, gas stations, business / commercial parking lots, park-n-ride lots, and other campsites that can be used. Parking on the side of street or road is allowed in most places as long as you are parked safely and away from heavy traffic motorways. Just don't park in a dodgy part of a town / city. Because of homeless problem, many people live out of their cars or vans; hence, you are less likely to be troubled or 'moved on' by "lorries" or other authorities. You may deal with a Karen / Daren or 2, but being white, adorable, and charming, you will get you far. 😁 Again, I want to congratulate you on your trip in the van. I'll admit, the 'women can't drive' trope is...aggrvating me a bit. _I_ had faith in you! That aside, campervanning looks amazing! It's like a mini winnebago that you can actually go places in because it's regular size and not like driving a bus. Dunmase is gorgeous! Please show us more.
It’s not because he thinks women can’t drive, it’s because I do not mind scratching my own car to get into a space I’ve no right to be in 😂 but that’s my car, I would never scratch someone else’s!
Not sure if renting a camper for a week is really a broad enough window to give an informed opinion on campervanning in Ireland. I think it was more of a mobile airbnb....😢 The number 1 rule in campervanning is respect for others ! Leave NOTHING behind you. Most campervan people will actually pick up rubbish all around them when they arrive somewhere ,that was left by others ,for fear that campervans get a bad na 19:03 me. We certanly do ! We've been on the road for years and have found most parts of Ireland unwelcoming. Not usually the locals, but sometimes yes, generally it is the selective and discriminatory policies by our local authorities. They don't want you parking anywhere ,yet if you are in a jeep, a car or a van you can park all day and not a word. Good old Irish begrudgery is alive and well. At night all the car parks are empty but they wont let you use them then either.Anyway there are not near enough facilities for campervans in Ireland. Persecuted and discriminated by 90% of county councils unfortunately. Not allowed into most beach and coastal car parks due to barriers etc, even if you want to stop for a walk on the beach ,or bring equipment for your kids to go surfing or kayaking, you are not welcome or allowed the freedom provided to all others. They fit in 1 car space like a van.! There have been isolated recent cases where selfish people, new to campervanning ,have put up awnings and spread out deck chairs in adjacent parking spots. That is not tolerated by real campervanning people. That is disgraceful behaviour but people do it in cars and vans also. There is Anti campervan signage in many towns. Bundoran and Strandhill are very anti camper for instance. The very few campsites in Ireland are booked out in advance in summer and mostly are closed in the winter ,so not really usable for most. We don't actually like campsites. We've stayed in quite a few . Penned in like sardines looking at campers beside you. Campervans are about freedom and being able to sit out and watch the sun set over the sea or mountains and to move about freely. You can't do that easily in Ireland. We have found some places over the years where you can park overnight with sea views etc and nobody minds at all.Go to Europe is my advice ,where there are proper facilties and a third of what campsites charge here .The truth is Ireland has rejected campervan tourism in general. Bord failte encourage tourism and its vast income to our country ,but the county councils stop it every chance they get unfortunately. They all seem to have 1 camper park in each county which has not enough spaces and then about 25 car parks around the county that are locked to campers. The local councils even lock public toilets at 6pm in lots of places in high season. !! Prebooking places and having exact schedules are not what we call campervanning in our book. If you find a nice place you might want to chill for a few days there or even catch some nice waves maybe... Bon Voyage.🙂
A week spent holidaying in a campervan is more than enough to give an *opinion* on holidaying in a campervan? People living in campers (especially as it’s not allowed here, to the best of my knowledge) will have a vastly different experience to the one I had, and my experience as a holidaymaker was the only one I was intending to share. 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks for sharing your experience!
Never chased the Fairy but I never plan much. Starting point and final destination is about it. I hardly ever drive the big freeways and have found limited camping this time of year as well...love the pub...be well, stay safe
This was an informative video about the campervan life. You have given me a lot of advice about it that I never would have asked or known. You made me realize that I have to plan to see if I can park anywhere... overnight.... And, YES, Febreeze! Thanks. Was it the journey and/or the destination that was memorable for you?
I love the idea of Van-Life in Ireland - I’m currently doing it in Canada which is a lot easier what with finding spots for parking because you can find a spot to spend the night for free almost everywhere. But I am European and I am going home eventually so two questions: if you’re not into a campervan with all the utilities provided but more into the just a minivan with a matress, nothing else kind of thing (aka, basically a normal family car) - are you then allowed to spend the night outside of official camping sites in Ireland? And if no - or also if yes just out of interest - how expensive is it to spend a night at an official campsite? And extra question: is wildcamping allowed with a tent?
Wild camping is allowed in some places with a tent as an exception eg Connemara National Park allows it as long as you follow the Leave No Trace guidelines, but it’s never allowed in a camper. It’s not technically allowed to live in a car or van at all, so while you might get away with a minivan and mattress, you could also get moved on from wherever you’re parked. Campsites vary. Usually 10-15 for a tent and 15-25 or so for a camper, I believe? I know I paid in those ranges for the camper, mostly 20-25 range.
Dunmase was beautiful! Sorry Millie didn't have fun. And I don't think you lost her. She was with Lily, and Lily couldn't get lost there! They're bth the same kind of mix, just different colors 🙂
My 3x Great Grandfather escaped a workhouse in Ireland during the Great Famine, then came to America where he was immediately enlisted to fight in the American Civil War on the Union side! Edited to add the funny bit: He somehow ended up back in Ireland, we think he got himself in trouble in the USA 🤣 His descendants somehow ended up living in Liverpool England. Probably like a lot of other Irish who moved there, for dock work. Anyway, his niece first moved to America to run a successful boarding house with her husband, then his granddaughter (My great-grandmother) made her way here (alone at 16yrs old, working for a family that also emigrated, employed as a governess) but really she was coming to work for her Aunt & Uncle in the Boarding House and that’s our Ireland/England to US origin story ♥️
That’s a gorgeous camper, I love the bed I love if all. I cleaned an 80s camper before and the owner were bout to get rid of it it looked that bad it was that bad but I spent a full day cleaning and fixing it up and the owners were so pleased they took it to the coast in Waterford and Wexford for the week. Only thing is the set up was so 80s and slightly uncomfortable looking sleeping areas but the family were very happy with it. I’m gonna do what she’s doing and rent a camper for a week before I buy one or a van to convert seen as Ireland isn’t really the best place in the world for nomads
It was a fulfilling week I’m certain for you. The next time you have a go for following the fairies. It’ll be easier, maybe even bring Alex along. If he promises to behave 😂 Drone footage was neat. Although at one quick moment. I thought you might accidentally. Chase yourself unknowingly lol controls are a strange learning experience at first.
Looks like you had an amazing time! I said many times here in the States, some one could make a fortune setting up a stream of stops where there's an attendant to do all the dumping/cleaning/refilling/etc. I know my Dad would have paid and paid handsomely for someone else to do it. Looks like a missed opportunity in Ireland, too. You managed very well. Looks like Millie finished the trip with you after all? Thanks for the video.
Hello Clare! Greetings from upper left USA! Thank you for making this video. I have wondered before if a camper van in Ireland would be worth it and how doable it may be. The roads off the motorways to many sights are so narrow. I wondered about parking. Good to know wild camping is not allowed. I am proud of you for venturing into county Laois to see the Rock of Dunamase. (I was surprised that county was on your list of sites given your past ranking vid. 😂) I took my hubby to Dunamse when we visited Ireland. I had a lot of choice words for Cromwell while there. It also gave me a chance to give a brief history lesson. 😢 Thanks again for the great content. Slan.
@@Clisare LOL! ❤ If you find yourself in Laois again, you should visit the Mass Rock. I'm spiritual but not religious. Still, I found myself in awe of this area tucked away in the woods. I love that it is preserved and looks to still be in use at times. It highlights the struggles Irish have endured to maintain their religious choices.
The first thing I thought of was trying to drive a larger vehicle in some of the touristy spots. Like I’d be afraid to drive that van around the Ring of Kerry. Though as long as you avoid busses I imagine you’d be OK. =)
"Excuse me this IS work"...is the mental block that many of us have, me in particular, that stops us from believing that fun can be work and benefiting from that fun monetarily is ok.
Thanks for this Clare, yet another option for my upcoming trip. Do you happen to know the best fairy following routes to go by AirBnB's? Slàinte Mhath ☘
“Following the fairies” means to go with the flow, follow recommendations and see what happens. So you can’t pre plan and follow the fairies I’m afraid! I have a list of cool Airbnbs in my Éire bnb series though if you want to pre plan!
Now, Clare, something you might enjoy. TH-cam won't let me send you the URL (don't know why) so her name is Nikki Delventhal and her most recent TH-cam video is a tour of her just finished van in which she will live and travel with her dog Camper (who looks like a distant cousin of Millie). She's been living in and touring around the US and Youtubing about it for years. Of course, the US ain't Ireland which is about as close to Middle Earth as one can get (on my only trip to Ireland in 1967, I had just finished reading The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings so you can imagine why that memory is rather fixed).
That really is a nice campervan and it seems reasonable except for the insurance which seems outrageous! The insurance is almost as much as the rental? I wonder if your car insurance company would have a cheaper rate?
You can’t get your own insurance 🤷🏻♀️ you can choose to go without this insurance but you need to leave a €2000 deposit in case of any damage if you want to go this route. I personally didn’t want a €2000 hold on my card for the week.
Ngl, €1120 for a week is a lot. I could rent a car and just stay at cheap hotels for roughly the same price if not less (depending if you stay at a hostel or not). I think the concept is really neat, but it’s definitely not cost effective if you’re trying to see Ireland on a budget.
I actually don't believe that you got out of that tight spot. I believe that you are still there to this day, permanently trapped between those two cars, and bards sing your tale in pubs all around Ireland to warn fellow travellers of your fate...
Two Out of two isn't to bad just good thing you did not film this video during the busiest part of tourist season in Ireland. If you got into a car accident more than likely if would not of been your fault, but one of many American tourist should not allow to drive. Also surprised, "Wife reprimanding a tourist for incompetent driving skills" was not written on the dry erase board. Not sure if Alex would also write, "Wife getting arrested for running over a garda or nuns foot while backing out."
Drop by Dermot's place. I'm sure he'll let you camp in his driveway. But he won't let you in to use the loo.
@@Joedirt3349 . . .Dermot, is that you?
That looks like fun but I think I’d need either my husband or a girlfriend for company.

In Ireland and the UK we commonly use the word hob for what in American English might be called a cooktop or stovetop. No fireplace necessary.

A fabulous place Ireland.
Emptying the chemical toilet reminds me of that Robin Williams film, RV where he has to empty the septic tank. It doesn't end well 💩...
There are several places near me where campervans park up for the night. So I wouldn't say you *have* to book in somewhere every night.
Legally, you do!
Definitely need to give this a try. Quick question: do you have any suggestions for Galway?

Now, Clare, something you might enjoy. TH-cam won't let me send you the URL (don't know why) so her name is Nikki Delventhal and her most recent TH-cam video is a tour of her just finished van in which she will live and travel with her dog Camper (who looks like a distant cousin of Millie). She's been living in and touring around the US and Youtubing about it for years. Of course, the US ain't Ireland which is about as close to Middle Earth as one can get (on my only trip to Ireland in 1967, I had just finished reading The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings so you can imagine why that memory is rather fixed).
ok, but what about biking through Ireland? surely one would be safe on the roads there?..although I'd probably be stopping a lot to soak things in
Niall did that
I would absolutely love to have a van and drive around seeing stuff, but alas, my driving skills arent that good 😬
Bathroom? do you need a bath?
That really is a nice campervan and it seems reasonable except for the insurance which seems outrageous! The insurance is almost as much as the rental? I wonder if your car insurance company would have a cheaper rate?
You can’t get your own insurance 🤷🏻♀️ you can choose to go without this insurance but you need to leave a €2000 deposit in case of any damage if you want to go this route. I personally didn’t want a €2000 hold on my card for the week.
@@Clisare They got you then. Yup, that is a big deposit.
Ngl, €1120 for a week is a lot. I could rent a car and just stay at cheap hotels for roughly the same price if not less (depending if you stay at a hostel or not). I think the concept is really neat, but it’s definitely not cost effective if you’re trying to see Ireland on a budget.
Methinks that should one decide to take a drink every time Ms Clare says "Campervan," that their family will be holding a wake for them very soon. 😳😂🤣
I was going to laugh at this, thinking "drink? Or shot? Can't be that bad." 9 campers, 19 campervans. Drinks....eh, might do. Shots? No way! 😅
@@LindaC616 Which is why I put drinks not shots lol

Be save
👍
So I have a question is there tourist places open in the end of September to early October? I am planning on coming out there around that time.
Yes. But still double check everything you want to see
Alex was concerned for you. That was sweat.
"Jesus, I was sitting too close to it!"
I actually don't believe that you got out of that tight spot. I believe that you are still there to this day, permanently trapped between those two cars, and bards sing your tale in pubs all around Ireland to warn fellow travellers of your fate...
😂😂😂
Two Out of two isn't to bad just good thing you did not film this video during the busiest part of tourist season in Ireland. If you got into a car accident more than likely if would not of been your fault, but one of many American tourist should not allow to drive. Also surprised, "Wife reprimanding a tourist for incompetent driving skills" was not written on the dry erase board. Not sure if Alex would also write, "Wife getting arrested for running over a garda or nuns foot while backing out."
No pooping in the van!
That GIANT water bottle...yea better to have a rolling toilet with you!
!ALGORITHM!
Callin someone a bstard for parking within a meter of you😂
You can pull that van straight outta that spot with that much room. It's not a bus
