Thanks for making this video, really helped me out a ton on my own car. I found the rear heatshield bolt to be really difficult though, nearly impossible to reach. What I ended up doing was removing the 15mm alternator bolts first so I can rotate it to expose those hard to reach bolts, and then removing the heatshield before fishing the alternator out of the engine bay. You made it look easier than it actually is!

Those freaking heat shield bolts can kick rocks!!! This is probably the most difficult alternator I've done. Then again I've only done a handful. Thanks for the video!

Thanks! I've never done mechanic work before and I change my own alternator. This video works except, I suggest jacking your car up and going under to get the bolts, charger cable, heat shield, etc. That saved a lot of time. This guy must be tiny because your hand won't get there with tools. You see how small his ratchet is. SAVE TIME AND JACK YOUR CAR UP!!!

your video was one of the best I've watched in regards to giving great attention to detail. I like the fact that you didn't stop the video when you put the alternator back on. Most people just say "now reverse what you did in order". Thank you for taking the time to post this.

Thanks! This video really helped me a lot. I broke my tensioner pulley in the process. Lol it's old. Was a hundred dollar car. After replacement & tune up. She now runs like a dream

Pull the inner fender cover passenger side front wheel well. It will give you access to the lower two alternator heat shield bolts, the two lower alternator bolts, the lead wire (10mm nut fastener) and the 5 volt reference wire.
You simply turn the wheel all the way to the right. You don't have to remove the tire but for more room pull it. Also you don't have to remove the ecm or the other breather cover. Bring the bottom bolt hole tab between the two middle brake lines and the alternator will come out between the upper radiator hose and the right fender.

Removal of the PCM is not necessary. Just remove the two wire harness and ground lead as instructed and pull up and out of the way. Leave the PCM module in place. I accessed the lower heat shield bolts and the two lower mounting bolts by way of the passenger side tire well. Just removed the passenger side front tire for easier access. I was also able to remove the rear battery power lead boot and nut from the rear of the alternator from the tire well also. Much easier for those people with larger hands than the guy in the video.

Yes its true, just did my 04 cts 3.6..had to remove front passenger side tire for east access to removed bolts and wires easily..i went underneath,my head was in the middle of the car to work my rachet around to remove bolts and disconnect 10mm nut from behjnd alternator..did the same thing to install new one..and yes two pcm wires doest not need to remove..risky because they are brittle and can cause damage..

Thanks for the video. It was a good reference when I was replacing the alternator on my 2008 CTS. My alternator made it ~102k miles. I didn't wind up removing the tensioner and didn't need to remove the air intake duct since I brought the alternator straight up and out. Although the ECM was located in slightly different spot (on left), I removed it to give myself some additional room to work.

I had to jack up the car and remove the tire to access from underneath. No need to remove the heat shield. It’s attached to the alternator. Otherwise I followed the process. Pretty straight forward.

Replaced the alternator on my 2015 ATS 3.6 v6 using this video as my guide. I had/have no real mechanic experience beyond changing tires and oil, etc.
My point is that this video is very well done. The newer setup was a little different but enough translated for a successful swap. I feel pretty damn accomplished thanks to this vid.
    Well done- good stuff.

Great video I️ wish my hands were tiny enough to use this technique! I️ ended up having to jack up my CTS and remove the front passenger tire to access the rear charge line and bottom bolts for the heat shield and alternator.

Definitely some awesome techniques, Anthony, and especially that tip about using a long extender to get down between all the wires and pipes and other stuff in order to loosen and tighten the nut on the alternator's output post, as seen at 07:30 and 09:00 ... that was awesome too.... great works, Mike :-)

Well check some of the comments, the video poster says it took him a bit over an hour from start to finish. 2-3 hours is not a bad book time considering "a bit over an hour" is best case. 2-3 hours accounts for any unknowns that may come up.
