      It's nice that you got to keep your same wage. I work for a California company but I live in another state with lower costs of living and I make 75% more than the average wage in my state of residence. However, most people that move reduce both their cost of living and wages and they end up in the same position.

      Sulfen this was true for me. We moved in 2010 to escape the high cost of living only to receive lower paying jobs in Springfield, Mo. this place is a hell hole!!! These assholes are stuck in 1950’s. I can’t wait the get back to the central coast. Damn right I’d rather pay High cost of living and be surrounded by beautiful weather and a nice cultural mix of people any day. I’m white but my wife is Korean along with my kids and the racism here is very bad.

    California is overpopulated and overtaxed. It's that simple. Overpopulated means a high cost of living because too many people are chasing too few homes. Overtaxed means you get to keep less of your own money. You would think that with so many people making so much money that taxes would be below average, but that is not the case. I never lived there, but have been there many times on business, and have lived in many other states -- some of which have the same problem (Illinois is one which also has a mass exodus happening). You can live better for less money in many places in the U.S.

    I lived in Northern California for over a decade before moving out of state six years ago. The main driver was the insane cost of living. I had a hi tech salary and had even made some decent money from stock options. Despite that, I had no hope of being able to purchase even a half-way decent house within reasonable distance from work. Only options I would have had was to move way inland to Tracy or far down south to Gilroy. I finally just gave up and moved out of California. Best decision I ever made. I now own a 2700 sqr foot home, completely paid for, in a very nice community. California is beautiful. I won't deny that. But the current situation is simply unsustainable.

The day I got my retired papers (DD 214), I drove out of Camp Pendleton, San Diego; South I-5; and East I-8; heading toward the Lone Star State of Texas. As a disabled veteran, I pay zero for one vehicle, and $43 for the second vehicle (2017 model). I also pay zero property tax for my $280K brand new 4BD/2.5BA house. Gasoline here in Texas is around $2.20-$2.40 a gallon.

    • @ElectrologyNow
      @ElectrologyNow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lauranardoni5626 I also know our history very well (having been a history teacher). Reagan did close the institutions ... but also at the request of the psychology association itself!
      Reagan, however, is also responsible for ending (winning) the Cold War and tearing down the Berlin Wall. (I was living in Germany at the time.)
      Politicians do great things ... and do bad things, e.g., FDR allowed Japanese Americas to be placed in camps, JFK's father admired Hitler and thought England should be defeated by Germany. Teddy Roosevelt killed thousands of big game animals ... AND, created most of our National Parks.
      What's important is the here-and-now ... not kvetching about the past. Blaming Reagan for our present-day homeless problem is not productive. You don't BLAME ... you solve.
      The Democrat policies RIGHT NOW in California are creating misery and encouraging drug-use, filth on the streets and homelessness. Versteh?

      Electrology Now The homeless problem is one the most important problems in our time. I am not sure where you live, I left CA 15 years ago for other reasons. Now, because the nice people of CA gave bus tickets to the homeless destined for Eugene, Portland to to live, the buck has been passed. Only problem in living in Northwest, it get bitterly cold at night. We build small house villages etc for the vets, then the rest. We are a small state compared to CA, and lack the resources that they have to solve the problems, but, passing the buck to other states is wrong! It is much harder to survive in the cold, but, in CA they don’t care.

      I do not approve of the way Republicans have behaved in our country lately, look at the impeachment going on right now, they are not the saviors either. The Debt has gone sky high under 3 years of trump, like a huge jump! Every time a Rep. leader screws up the economy, the dems have to clean up the mess. I don’t believe how GREAT the economy is either, most people think Wall Street is paved with gold, not! Farmers are loosing their farms left and right, many people have to work many jobs to survive. When they count the jobless numbers, the figures are rigged. I too pay attention to history, am a former Corp. owner before It became impossible to work(many illnesses). I had my own disability policy I paid for with insurance I paid for. I have had much time to consume the facts. We are paying more to survive, and the quality of life has not improved for the working class, only gotten worse.

By middle class, in this case, I mean the people who are not wealthy enough to not be concerned with day to day finances but not so poor that they (we) cannot be taxed. The wealthy either con't care how much they pay in taxes (because taxes don't impact their lifestyles), or they have the opportunities to limit their tax liabilities, and the poor aren't taxed because they have no money. This of us in between have just enough money that we can be, and are, taxed at every turn.

      Odd numbers that you throw out. The average income for San Mateo county is just over $240k a year. A lot of software people live there. Lower middle isn't $500k to $1 million a year. You're grossly overstating incomes for the different middle class income levels.

    • @jondstewart
      @jondstewart 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, how about federal employees? Like GS-9 to GS-13’s? Middle-class in the lower 48. In the Bay Area, those folks make around 60 to 120K a year and that’s with a COLA allowance. That’s only enough for a single person with no dependents to afford a decent one bedroom apartment.
      Of course I exaggerated. But not by that much. I know a man who’s uncle is a neurologist making about $300K a year in the area and he can barely afford a suburban home and has a family.

    • @Rhaspun
      @Rhaspun 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely that neurologist wants to buy a bigger house in a nicer area. He probably feels he deserves it with his above average income. People over spend on their house and they struggle. If you're trying to live in the Bay Area on income less than $150 then you will have to look something that is within your price range. It's going to be condo or a fixer upper. People are doing it. Many people don't want to cut back on their discretionary spending when they are pulling a six figure income. Some people make the sacrifices.

      I started my first cleaning business when I was 21, with basically no knowledge at all... I went to the city and had to ask 100 questions on what forms to fill out and what to do, how to start a business...
      Now I had over 8 businesses, some failed some successful, and make a good living for myself...
      Key phrase I learned from my dad was...
      " dont get a job, think of ways to make jobs for others..."

I've managed to keep my job by working hard and not fucking around. the cost of living is fairly cheap in my city rather than the rest of California. But sadly were run by conservatives. So nothing important gets done here. they even protested a major concert festival (major source of money for the city, in the millions) because snoop dogg was headlining. they'd rather lose out on money the city desperately needs than to hear snoop dogg for an hour and a half at 10 I clock at night

    As an adult, I've lived in two other states (AZ and FL) and have always come back to California. It's not just the weather, but the mountains, coastline, farmland, deserts, forests, cities. Creative, interesting people. I'm a conservative - and, yes, the state government is liberal beyond belief, but even that won't last forever. Question: if "so many people are leaving," why does traffic in big cities continue to get worse, housing prices continue to go up? Why does the Golden State continue to be a draw to people from across the nation and around the world?

    I love living in San Diego and am a sixth generation Californian, but I think about moving out of state all the time. Could pay cash for a house in most places and cut property taxes in half which would make my retirement look much better down the road. Also lower income tax, lower sales tax, lower gas tax, cheaper utilities, cheaper food. Not to mention better (sane) state government by moving out. I've traveled to most states in the country. Almost all have a lot to offer in terms of quality of life. California is not the end all, be all for happiness.

      There is a housing shortage and prices are skyrocketing because PEOPLE ARE BUYING UP HOMES AND THERE IS NONE LEFT....SO people are leaving in droves....LOL... does that even make sense to you..?
      Do you know what that means...? THAT means there are TOO many people coming into California compared to the people moving out...and because of that housing prices are too high, so people are forced to leave...
      That means people who are forced to leave are poor non home owners...

      kil koh yes that's true but there are many other issues along that have to be taken into consideration. For example, I don't agree that these Chinese Investors who have never spent a year living out here let alone a decade should be buying homes with such ease. Many Angelenos ( in my case ) are and would be left out in an opportunity of buying a home for that matter. Besides, as I've read many of your comments on this thread I do agree that people need to learn how to adapt and overcome obstacles by looking for opportunities or creating them. Unfortunately, many of these people that are leaving and who can't stay in California are people with families. Which is why I'm single, have no children and have found a way so far to cut on my expenses while still being able to enjoy some of my money. At the end of the day we will all die some way, some how so worrying and over thinking about this should not be too much a concern. Peace !

    I considered moving to northern California from the east coast in 1999 for a high tech job. The income would have been higher which would be balanced by the higher cost of living. However, I would have been a day's plane ride and other travel to return to my family. This would have eaten up my vacation time and vacation budget. So I stayed on the east coast closer to family. I have since traveled to vast areas of North America and western Europe.

    We lived in CA for 37 years, but when we retired we moved. I don't regret a day of leaving CA. The cost of living there is extremely high (and really not worth it).

    San Luis Obispo has low wages and high home prices. We live on the central coast and it it a great place if you have enough money.

    I left San Diego for OKC. I paid cash for a brand new 2,500 sq foot home from my home’s equity. I have never looked back. California is absurdly overpriced.

    There is a reason why California is expensive and places like Arizona and Nevada are much cheaper. San Luis Obispo and other places like Monterrey are so beautiful and the weather is fabulous. Nevada and Arizona is like sticking your head in an oven. Eight months a year it is over 100 degrees.

    I lived in LA 2000-2001. An exciting place to live but the high cost of low living gets to you after a while. I absolutely can see why middle class people are fleeing to Nevada and Texas. They take a wee pay cut but their quality of life is much better.

    I am from Ca. Moved away in 2006. Expensive, too many illegals and gangs, terrible traffic, high taxes, no representation due to corrupt liberals and activist judges.....

    People are leaving because rents are increasing drastically AND owners are cashing in on the outrageous prices..a house bought 10 years ago has doubled in value in CA.

    It cost approximately $1,900 for a studio apartment in Los Angeles. If you want a parking spot it will be extra. Don't expect the luxury of having a washer and dryer. If you want those luxuries expect to pay upwards of $2,500 a month.

    The cost of living poses a challenge to the working poor, who want to leave but cannot do so without becoming homeless in transition.

    I make it fine with 1 job, most people live beyond their means.
    That being said, yes there is changes that need to be made, tax, fuel, but most of all we need to stop trying to put everyone in McMansion's, if they stop forcing people to buy big then people could afford to live on their income, allow tiny homes to be built, not every town needs to have row upon rows mile upon miles of McMansion's.

      Some areas have HOAs that require a minimum house size. I bought some property near Milpitas. The HOA required a minimum of 3000 sq ft. Kind of big for a family of three.

    So many are coming to Nevada to escape high taxes, housing costs, etc. However the majority I talk with are very liberal, they don't see a connection between the problems they're leaving and liberal politics...blows me away

    I live in CA, single, have my own place, have a car, no debt. This report only covers those obviously not making enough to stay here, but I'm doing just fine and every year my pay has been getting better including my peers. So while I do agree it's expensive here, I also believe the people in this report just didn't make the right financial choices. I mean, look at the first couple complaining that they bought a house and then couldn't keep up with property tax, etc. If you can't afford the expenses on a house then you obviously can't afford to own a house. Simple facts.
