    OMFG I have been browsing for a lap board for PC gaming in my recliner and was wondering how on Earth I could build one myself. They are so expensive. You sir have won the internet even after 6 years. Thank you. I am about to order the stuff I need. I have the board

    Just built this. Its excellent! My staple gun packed up so i used screws to secure the fabric edges and its all good. Fits perfect for me. Great idea and it cost me all of £25 in materials inc the mouse mat. Cheers!!

    Thanks for the video. I don't have room for a computer desk in my bedroom and that's where I like to unwind and game. Wanted a lap desk but like you, couldn't find a decent one for a good price. Decided to make my own, so I came here.

    Thanks for the great video. I have now made a lap desk using your vid. Cost me £25 as i already had the board, glue and staple gun.
    In case any one was wondering, I used 18mm MDF that measured 800x300mm. Gave me just the right amount of material to work with without having to trim too much excess.

    Interesting build. Have you thought about upgrading your supports? You could get a 4'x8'x3.5" sheet of foam insulation board from Home Depot (or your favorite hardware store) for less than $20USD. Cut a few pieces that will be the right size for extending under your arms and holding up the desk, then glue them together for your preference of width. After this you can wrap them in a fabric of your choice. Amazing difference and your elbows and shoulders will thank you :D

    If you want armrests you can add a 2nd block to the existing one. Personaly i would glue it but you can also use velcro. Maybe they have to be a bit lower depending on your elbow hight.

  • @RobinMarkowitzcoolmedia
    @RobinMarkowitzcoolmedia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I did it! Thank you so very much. I used what I found around the house and garage. But I did order those yoga blocks and some industrial strength velcro. I might actually send the yoga blocks back because I'm happy with the feel of the high density foam I found. We'll see.
    I couldn't have done it without your guidance. This is still the "Laplander" but it's "rooted." LOL Thanks again! 😎

    I know this is an old video. Prices of wood have gone waaaay up. A word of advice on folding the sides (after folding front and back) is to cut off some of the excess in the corners or at least cut a diagonal line across the corners to make less resistance when folding). Using clamps to clip the mat in place may also help with stapling. I personally would like to put pillows on the underside instead of yoga blocks.

    • @DIYDaveB
      @DIYDaveB  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I probably would have done it a bit differently now. I think getting foam cut would be more comfortable to rest my arms.

    I'm very surprised nobody seems to be doing lap desks with a format like a boomerang, I mean with the sides extending to the elbows of the user. I need one desk that supports my arm so I can use the mouse without feeling pain because of tendinitis. I think I'm going to try doing it myself. But good video

    I had a good idea watching this video if you have a sewing machine.. Buy 2 giant mouse pads and sew them together into a sleeve > insert board and profit. You can sew the Velcro to the bottom facing mouse pad to ensure it doesn't fall off.

    Bravo, bravo old chap! The cost of these damn things are through the roof! Time to head to Lowe's then Micro Center, and local Walmart. Fully customizable the way you have it. Looking forward to gaming on my Xbox Series X or HTPC on the big screen while chilling in the Lazy-Boy. This is the way to go. Love the fact that it can be dissembled and stored away afterwards. I'm sure I can buy a cheap shelf and a cheap XXL mouse mat. I can size it for my fat ass to fit between it as well. Frag ya later!

    Maybe with the adding the velcro, stuck it on the yoga blocks first (hook side first then put the loop side on that - with adhesive backing still on). Remove the backing from the loop side then stick the blocks on. Should make lining the block and velcro up much easier!

      +mitsuhideakechi1 the mouse pad you should be able to find at any larger computer component store, yoga blocks can be found anywhere, even some department stores like Walmart have them and the Velcro you can get at a hardware store. :) good luck and thanks for watching!

      I forgot to say, I live in Brazil that's why'd be difficult to find all that stuff, we got Walmart as well, but it's far as hell from my neighborhood and probably more expensive than other stores. My concerns are most on Yoga Blocks, 'cause never heard of them here and that huge mouse pad (which I'd like very much to use) is gonna be tough to find. Thanks for replying.

      Hey, I can just recommend you buying the Steelseries QcK XXL. I own a smaller version of that mousepad. The XXL variant is 900x400mm, like the one used here. It's very durable. I bought it a few years ago and it's still in very good conditions. It's the best mousepad I have used yet. As Steelseries is a big, globally acting company, I'm sure you will also be able to buy it in Brazil.

      Bordergames Amazon should be available wherever you live. All his materials are in the description. I was just fortunate to have the high density foam, but the Yoga blocks should work just fine. The professional grade Velcro he uses really is different from the run of the mill Velcro on, say, your rain slicker. I was amazed at how strong it is. Additionally, the adhesive on this type of Velcro is on for life. So be very careful about exactly where you wish to place the blocks or whatever type of riser you will use. I used pencil marks just to be certain.

    Thanks for the great build, my poor 8 year old logitech n500 lapdesk is finally at the end of its rope, and seeing as replacing it would cost $250+ just for the same wimpy plastif feet to break off after a month, I will be giving some thought as how to modify what you did here to emulate what I love about my current lapdesk. Question if you don't mind throwing out an idea or two: if you were making a laptop gaming lapdesk and you wanted it at a slight incline towards you (to make it easier to use the keyboard), what do you think would be a good way to keep the laptop from sliding forward and off the lapdesk?
    The problem I've always had with the n500 from logitech is that I adore the comfort and shape and size, but the little plastic 'stoppers' at the end break really easy, so I've always had to deal with adjusting myself and my laptop to constantly correct it sliding forwards. Not the most clear description I guess, but thanks for the video, very helpful!

    • @DIYDaveB
      @DIYDaveB  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment!
      If I were to make it and incline, I would probably get some foam and cut it to size vs using the yoga blocks. As for it sliding off, I may glue and tack on a thin piece of wood, then place the mouse mat over top and maybe place some staples to secure it. May not look as pretty, but definitely more functional for your use.

    • @Wandervon
      @Wandervon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The foam and the wood is a great idea! I'm going to experiment this weekend or the next and see what crazy contraption I come up with. I figure that if I make it a few inches longer on the X axis, I can add that little wooden stopper you described, as well as one of those squishy gel wrist pads that you normally use in front of a keyboard. I can definitely do the foam and cut it down until I have it just right, is there a type of foam you'd recommend? I'm sure I could make some type of covering for them and then velcro them down like you've done here. Thanks so much for the reply!

    Any issues with stability or the velcro coming off? Also, how much does that wooden plank typically cost you?

    • @DIYDaveB
      @DIYDaveB  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No issues with stability, but that will also depend on the stiffness of your couch cushions. I have taken the Velcro on and off about a dozen times and haven't had an issue with it, it's the industrial strength stuff, so it should hold fairly well even with out the additional staples I used. The wood I got from a friend, to find out the cost I would drop by your local hardware store and see if they can cut a piece of board that size and how much it will cost approx.

    I already have "the board." It's the classic half-moon Levenger Cherrywood Laplander lap desk. Problem is that my newer chair has arms that are too low and the lap desk rests uncomfortably on my legs. I will buy the yoga blocks (didn't know of such things), and I already have velcro. I would like for it to not be a permanent part of the desk because the chair may be replaced whenever.
    I have bad back pain and so I use a reclining chair with the Levenger board. This looks pretty easy, but it might take me a few days. THANK YOU!!!!!!
    All I might have to do is to cut the yoga blocks to match the Levenger laplander, which is a piece of wood with a very comfortable shape. But my new chair's arms are too low so the weight of my beast of a laptop is crushing my legs. I can't thank you enough for this video! www.levenger.com/Levenger-Lap-Desk-614.aspx

    • @DIYDaveB
      @DIYDaveB  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nicolaas DeYager Some hardware stores can cut wood to size for free. Ask for a piece of plywood with the dimensions. My piece of wood was from a shelf the my friend was throwing away.

    ⭐⭐⭐🇷🇺А как потом чистить? Ткань лучше на липучках прифигаривать, а еще нужно бортики чтобы клавиатура и мышь несоскользнули на пол. Ну в целом так норм 👍

    This really isn't a very good end product. What was I looking for? Plastic. But at the same time, nothing glossy. Nothing that makes that squeaking sound while you drag your fingers across it.
