One Handed Woodworking Tips #3: Cladding Featherboards to a Shed

In this short video, after trying various convoluted methods to apply featherboard cladding to my shed, I find a remarkably easy solution to the 'one handed' issue with some offcuts of featherboard and a bit of OSB 😀.

Totally agree Owen, I’d thought of various over-complicated ideas to ‘fix’ this problem when the blatant obvious was on the floor in scraps around me 🤷♂️😀😂

Certainly was Tony. As I said in the vid, tried all kinds of convoluted methods to no avail and a couple of offcuts wedging it in place does the job perfectly 😀

@@Hand-i-Craft yes, though I adopted a completely different method as my shed is clad in 8'x4' 3/4" exterior ply.

Using your video for basic understanding of feather boards and how to fix them to framing. Went in to town to get cheap 8mm thick Wickes panelling, for the inside surface of an one-end-of-a-shed log-store: and none in store; so settled for feather-boarding. Having never before used it, I wasn't quite sure how to work with it. So onto TH-cam for advice; and there you were.

Cheers James. Couldn’t believe how simple the answer was to this, tried all kinds of crazy ideas before I realised wedging the boards up with some offcuts was by far the best method 😂
Great to keep it simple, may I suggest you use a small table to put your screws and drills on, it will save your back after you have bent over 90 x 2? times! I am now in my 70's so anything to ease the day helps.
When we can get back to approaching normal I plan to demolish a shed and build a new shed/summer house so I am looking for ways to make things easier.

@@Hand-i-Craft I have been filling in a garden pond as our dog fell in the other night in the dark it was only 4C at the time and he could not get out. He survived but was filthy and very cold. It has taken many days but we have nearly finished, taking it slow and steady with plenty of rest. Enjoy your new creation!

@@Hand-i-Craft he is fine now but at 14 he has lost some spring in his back legs, he still helps around the house we trained him as a helper picking things up, collecting the post and putting our shoes away that sort of thing. But he expects a treat as a reward.
I am interested in how you cope with using one arm. I am a volunteer with Remap a national charity making and adapting things for the disabled and their carers so am always interested to see how people overcome problems and pick up ideas to file away for future use.

Bill Carroll Exactly Bill, the genius to it was in its simplicity😀. I’ve just done another side of 16 boards and it took me just over 30mins, including having to pre drill each hole so was very happy with that!

Hello. I stumbled onto your channel. Love all your tips. Do you happen to have any tips on one handed scroll saw. A lady in my woodworking club was heavy into scrolling before a medical event left her with the use of only one arm. We're trying to figure out ways she can get back into it. Thanks in advance!
Hello Dan, cheers for the message and kind feedback. Tbh I’ve never used a scroll saw before, but I do use a bandsaw quite a bit. Tips for usage largely centre around the safety aspect. Where possible I never position my hand in line with the blade, always to the side. And I tend to use the palm of my hand in addition to my fingers to securely hold whatever piece of stock I’m cutting to the table bed if that makes sense? Best wishes, Leo

Nice video 👍🏻 bit late now but you’re not really supposed to fix through the board below (the top edge) it restricts the expansion in different weather 😄 not having a go.
Cheers Mark. No worries not having a go at all, I’m always learning and you are not the first person to have told me about this. I’m hoping the predrilled holes that were slightly loose might help mitigate the expansion, but most importantly this was a rather large experiment for my upcoming workshop project so I won’t be making the same mistake again. Be interesting to see how they cope as since I put this shed up, the north west has apparently been visited by the four horsemen of the apocalypse 😂

Thanks Nick. Tbh I’m planning a ‘past projects’ update video and intend to include the shed cladding. In short, no issues at all, no splitting etc. The two screw method works fine despite numerous advice in the comments that it should only be one. It’s had huge changes in weather conditions as well, plus is in a garden that has direct south facing sunlight most of the day👍. Size wise I just bought the standard size from my timber merchant. Certainly do recommend buying from a timber yard though as the quality is much better than the paper thin type you get from the likes of b and q 👍
Great job , however you should really only use one fixing as you go along the board doing two one above each other will not allow for expansion and contraction through weather and damp and can/will cause the boards to split and warp ,, Regards,,
Thanks Jeff, you’re not the first person to mention this which has been great for me to learn😀..I’m just hoping the predrilled holes I made that were slightly oversized might help negate the expansion issue, fingers crossed 🤞😀

You've nailed it on at the wrong point my friend you should never nail through both bits you need to go just above the first board above the overlap
Cheers for this Northern Lad. Since this vid I’ve done a feather board fence with well over 200 boards using the technique you say👍. In fairness though I built that shed over a year ago, it is in a south facing garden and has gone through a hot summer last year and probably the wettest winter I can remember and there are no splits in the cladding or any signs of splitting either. I suppose it needs longer to see what will happen but all good up to now 😀👍
